The city of Mokpo suffers lowland inundation damages by sea water flooding even without harsh weather like a typhoon, due to the low level urban infrastructure facilities, oceanic environmental changes by constructions of seadike/seawall and sea level rise caused by global warming. This study performs constructing the simulation system which employs the MIKE21 software. And the system is applied to several typhoon- induced surges which had resulted in inundation at Mokpo. Virtual situation of flooding is simulated in case 59 cm of surge height, which had been occurred actually by RUSA(0215), coincides with Approx. H.H.W. Then the water level of 545 cm corresponds to the extreme high water level(544 cm) for 10 year return period after the construction of Geumho seawall. The results show rapid and broad inundation at Inner-Port, requiring additional preparations for flood protections.

The process of constructing coastal digital elevation model(DEM), for the 3 dimensional analysis, is composed by abstracting land layers for land elevation and water depth, reprojecting UTM, relocating geographical grid, and interpolating works. The geomorphic set of shallow sea, including tidal current, tidal zone deposition, and water depth distribution, was analyzed by eye search of Landsat TM image, masking of land zone, band combination and regression analysis. Some horizontal differences, between combined DEM and surveyed data of shallow sea, was corrected for analysis. Analyzed geomorphic elements are stream channel, alluvial fan, coastal terrace, tidal current. and shallow sea bank. Results of analysis present that transported fluvial materials influence tidal sedimentation, especially from Gahwacheon river, for the role of artificial draining flooding waters from Jinyang Reservoir, almost in the summer season. In the coastal area with less tidal current, more fine materials are deposited. The influence of currental deposition are higher on small pockets with west coast of well developed terraces. The lower skirt of alluvial fans developed into the tidal zone of shallow sea. Small pocket type bays are closed by coastal current, and less influenced from tidal deposition. The bank of Jinju Bay are developed originally from submerging of remnant erosional mountain ranges, and play on the role of trapping fine materials.

This study aims to compare and analyze the quality of life of residents between those living in coastal and non-coastal areas. The indicators for the quality of life were divided into three different sectors. First, the economic sector observed the rate of population growth, the number of businesses per 1000 people, the employment and unemployment rate. The second was the environmental sector, which included the number of car registrations per capita, water supply and sewer service ratio, the urban park composition area per 1000 people and the road pavement rate. Thirdly, the social sector comprising data about the number of students per teacher, the number of sickbeds in medical institutions per 1000 people, the rate of traffic accidents per 1000 cars and the portion of social welfare budget in general accounting. The analysis method of standardized indicators and T-Test were carried out in 24 coastal cities and 51 non-coastal cities across the country. Results of the indicator comparison suggested there were significant differences in the number of businesses per 1000 people, the road pavement rate and the rate of traffic accidents per 1000 cars. From the results of each sector comparison, the coastal cities showed a higher value than non-coastal cities only in the economic sector. The quality of life comparison showed that coastal cities were better than non-coastal cities but were not statistically significant.
The purpose of this study is to assess spatiotemporal variation of coastal water quality according to time and location changes. For this we developed numerical marine trophic index base on four water quality components (chlorophyll, suspended solids, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus) and applied this index to the water quality data measured in the korean coastal zone for the 7-years period from 1997 to 2003. Water quality data are obtained only at selected sites even though they are potentially available at any location. Therefore, in order to estimate spatial variation of coastal water quality, it is necessary to estimate the unknown values at unsampled locations based on observation data. In this study, we used IDW (Inverse Distance Weighted) method to predict water quality components at unmeasured locations and applied marine trophic index to predicted values obtained by IDW interpolation. The results of this study indicate that marine trophic index and spatial interpolation are useful for understanding spatiotemporal characteristics of coastal water quality.

Due to an oil spill accident occurred in Taean coastal zone wide range of coastal waters were polluted. Inaccurate prediction of spilled oil trajectory is known as a cause that has increased the pollution damage in the beginning stage. In this study, a numerical modeling of spilled oil dispersion has been conducted to know which physical factors caused the severe and wide pollution. Especially the simulation is focused on how to model hydrodynamic circulation accurately. The simulation results showed that the hydrodynamic flow is very important in predicting oil fate, specially, in the short-term dispersion of spilled oil.

This study is aimed to develop the dynamic analysis technique for a floating aquaculture in a shallow water region under the harsh sea condition. In case of the installation region to transform from a coastal area to the offshore area, the influence of sea bed with sea waves on the mooring lines was announced to be significant by other authors. In this study, the numerical tool was developed to solve dynamic behavior of the floating barge coupled with mooring lines in a shallow zone of the sea considering the influence of sea bed on the floating system.

The purpose if the study is to apply GIS technique to sample area, Choensoo-Bay basin for an efficient and practical coastal zone management if pollution control. The basins, Unit if pollution control, are selected with qualitative analysis using DEM after considered river length, degree and area of basin through channel network analysis. Choensoo-Bay basin is divided with 6 zones to 33 subordinate zones. It is found to be a big difference of pollutant loads in each zone. The pollutant loads use to review for efficient zoning. And also the result apply to measurement of water quality and building for environmental infrastructure.
Monthly mean chlorophyll concentration in the East Sea was estimated from the ocean color observed by the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) on Nimbus-7 satellite which had performed various remote sensing missions from 1979 to 1986. The areas of high chlorophyll concentration were found in the sea between Siberia coast and Sakhalin Island, in the Donghan Bay and in the Ulleung Basin. In the southwestern East Sea, especially in the area near Ulleung Island, the yearly maximum chlorophyll concentration occurred in December. The chlorophyll concentration in Ulleung Basin in December was about two times higher than during spring bloom in April. The early winter bloom occurred in the warm side of the front that was formed between warm water from the East China Sea and nutrition rich cold water from the northern East Sea.
Shoreline have been changed from time immemorial continuously, three-quarters of the population of the world live by the sea. It is not too much to say that all of us who live in Han penisular live by coastal zone because we can reach in the beach within only for hours. In this way effectual use and menagement of coastal zone is very importent problems in side of protection of marine resources as well as land use. But it has problems which change of shoreline have to be surveyed and to be predictived. This study the pattern and characteristics of the East sea coast including investigations of the shoreline changes of the East sea. This report gives a description of the method for implementing the seawall boundary condition in the shoreline change numerical model. Such analytical solutions can provide a simple and economical means to make a quick qualitative evaluation of shoreline response under a wide range of environmental and engineering conditions.
Tidal flat, classified as wetland of coastal zone, is critical transitional zone connecting sea with land, and fulfills a variety of functions necessary for maintaining coastal ecosystem. Although it is critical to protect and strengthen its functions of coastal wetlands, tidal flat has been mainly viewed as areas for development in Korea. Therefore, this study provides with the effective mitigation measures so as to minimize adverse impacts of tidal flat reclamation projects on the proper environmental values. So far, coastal development has not considered as important the fact that development site consists of tidal flat in site selection. Therefore, large scale of tidal flats was abused. Problems were emerged only after tidal flat development was already planned. The original plan had to be revised. To rectify the problem, impacts of development on the environment need to be discussed based on the initial development planning. Particularly, sandy beaches, rocky shores and shallow areas, underwater forest including seagrass beds as well as the tidal flat in good condition should be excluded from development site.
