Traffic density has increased recently in Korean waters due to an expansion of the sea trade and the development of coastal fisheries. The enlargement of the coastal industrial belts and the development of coastal inslands further increases marine traffic. The rapid increase of marine traffic has often resulted in marine casualties with the attendant loss of life, damage to property, and marine pollution. Especially, tanker casualties may destroyed the food web and an untold amount of ocean resources. Un regard to the potential of tanker spills in Korean waters, systematic research in this field is lacking. In this paper, the data relating to a total of 261 tanker casualties in Korean waters has been compiled and statistically anlaysed. The result of this study describes the general trend of marine casualties in Korean waters, and describes the casualtiy database, from which their causes and consequences are derived and this results in the determination of the causal relationships connected to tanker casualties, and quantifies the effective level of causal factorsin Korean waters.
As a part of the primary production in the coastal water of Korea Seas on October-November 1964 and June-July 1965, quantitative phytoplankton materials by the net haul were obtained. This paper deals with a study on the distribution quantity and specific composition of the phytoplankton in the same waters. 76 species of diatoms and 8 species of dinoflagellates in October-November 1964, and 74 species of diatoms and 7 species of dinoflagellates in June-July 1965 were found. In autumn of 1964 and spring of 1965, there occured 90 species of diatoms and 10 species of dinoflagellates, and 60 species of diatoms and 5 species of dinoflagellates were encountered in both seasons. The maximal total quantity of phytoplankton were observed at Pohang (27,844,000 cell/㎥), Ulsan (25,186,000 cells/㎥) and Yosu (12,829,000 cells/㎥) in June-July 1965 and the smallest (16,000 cells/㎥) at Jukbyon in the coast of the Sea of Japan in October-November 1964. The coastal water of Korean Seas, as well as in the primary production study, is divided into four regions by the phytoplankton characters; coastal waters of the Sea of Japan, the east part of the Southern Sea, the west part of the Southern Sea and the Yellow Sea. The coastal waters of the Sea of Japan and the east part of the Southern Sea, in generally, are rich in the phytoplankton. In the coast of the Sea of Japan, species of Chaetoceros and Bacteriastrum prevail and uncommon in species of Coscinodiscus and Rhizosolenia. In the east part of the Southern Sea, on the other hand, uncommon in species of Chaetoceros and Bacteriastrum, and species of Coscinodiscus Rhizosolenia and hemiaulus indicus prevail. The coastal waters of the west part of the Southern Sea and the Yellow sea are both poor in the phytoplankton but Coscinodiscus species prevailed comparatively.

It was turned out by shrimp beam trawl monthly survey from March, 2015 to February, 2016 that different species composition and abundance of the fish assemblages in Sacheon Bay and coastal waters off Namhae, Korea were compared. As a result of monthly measured sea temperature and salinity of Sacheon Bay and coastal waters off Namhae, sea temperature of both areas was changed seasonally; however, differences in sea temperature occurred during certain periods depending on the region. Salinity was generally low in Sacheon Bay affected by fresh water, and both areas was low in summer and high in winter. A total of 73 species representing 37 families were collected in Sacheon Bay. The dominant fish species in terms of numbers and biomass were Liparis tanakae, $23,077inds./km^2$, $332.1kg/km^2$. A total of 91 fish species representing 49 families were collected in coastal waters off Namhae. The dominant fish species in terms of numbers were Leiognathus nuchalis, $139,683inds./km^2$ and biomass were Chelidonichthys spinosus, $1,078.6kg/km^2$. Analysis of dendrogram of the clustering showed that Sacheon Bay and coastal waters off Namhae were distinctive featured (global R = 0.691, p = 0.017). And except of summer season (July-October), there was a distinctive feature seasonally (global R = 0.844, p = 0.001). The fish species that appeared in common in both areas, where fish species caught in Sacheon Bay, an important inner bay, were smaller than those caught in coastal waters off Namhae appeared. It presented that Sacheon Bay plays a more important role in spawning and nursery ground for fisheries resource than coastal waters off Namhae, Korea.
Extreme environments and freak wave characteristics in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula are analyzed using the observed wave data. Freak wave has been intensely emphasized as an important environmental force parameter in several recent research works. However, the mechanism and occurrence probability of freak wave are not clarified. The aims of this study we: to summarize the distribution of extreme environment for wind waves, and to find occurrence probability of freak wave in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula. These extreme sea conditions are discussed by applying extreme value analysis method, and the statistic characteristics are summarized which can be used to the design and analysis of coastal structures. The mechanism and the occurrence probability of freak wave are also discussed in detail using wave parameters in considered with wave deformation in the coastal waters. Key Words : extreme wave, freak wave, extreme analysis, design wave, probability density.
The seasonal succession of zooplankton communities in the coastal area off Incheon, Kyeonggi Bay, was investigated with the samples collected at intervals of 10 to 15 days from January 1999 to December 2000. Total abundance of zooplankton communities showed remarkable seasonal variations, ranged from 1,100 to $120,400{\;}indiv./\textrm{m}^3$, and annual mean abundance was $22,000{\;}indiv./\textrm{m}^3$. There were several times of the total abundance during a year, and the timing ofhigh abundances were about the same in 1999 and 2000. During the study period except summer, the abundance of dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans and copepod Acartia hongi contributed to the most part of total zooplankton. Whereas, during summer, smaller copepod Oithona davisae and Paracalanus crassirostris were dominant species. Zooplankton communities in the coastal waters off Incheon showed typical characteristics of coastal-estuarine communities, which were dominated by a few species, and abrupt seasonal variations in abundance. We suggest that the seasonal succession and abundance variations of zooplankton communities were caused by the seasonal variations in water temperature and by the seasonally varying phytoplankton biomass in the study area.
While typhoons were passing by the coastal and offshore waters around the Korean peninsula, the variations of the sea surface temperature (SST) were studied. To study on the variation, the data related to the 22 typhoons among 346 typhoons which occurred in the western Pacific during 1990∼1999, daily measured field SSTs at coastal and offshore, and imageries from advanced very high resolution radiometer on NOAA satellite during 1990∼1999 were used. The average variations of the SSTs were -0.9℃ at coastal waters and -2℃ at offshore around the Korean peninsula while the typhoons were passing by. In very near coastal waters from the land, the SST was not changed because the bottom depth of the coastal waters was shallower than the depth of thermalcline, while the typhoon was passing. The temporal and spatial variation of SSTs at coastal waters in summer were depended on the various types of the typhoons'paths which were passing through the Korean peninsula. When a typhoon passed by the western parts including the Yellow Sea of the Korean peninsula upwelling cold water occurred along the eastern coastal waters of the peninsula. The reason was estimated with the typhoon that was as very strong wind which blew from south toward north direction along the eastern shore of the peninsula, led to the Ekman transport from near the eastern coastal area toward the offshore. While cold water was occurring in the eastern coast, a typhoon passed over the coastal area, the cold water disappeared. The reason was estimated that the cold water was mixed up with the surrounding warm water by the effect of the typhoon. While a cold water was occurring in the eastern coast, a typhoon passed by the offshore of the eastern coast, there were the increasing of the SST as well as the disappearing of the cold water. While a typhoon was passing by the offshore of the eastern coast, the cold water which resulted from the strong tidal current in the western coast of the peninsula was horizontally spread from the onshore to the offshore. We think that the typhoon played the role of the very strong wind which was blowing from north toward south. Therefore, the Ekman transport occurred from the onshore toward the offshore of the western coast in the Korean peninsula.
Four Rhizosolenia species of marine diatom were appeared at 30 sites in Korean coastal waters from September 2008 to February 2010. The cell shape, diameter, length of pervalvar axis, external process, segment and areolation characters of the species were examined. All four species were cylindrically shaped, but the external processes differed. Segment striations were regularly straight, and velum showed hexagonal, circular pore and narrow slit. Rhizosolenia formosa and R. hyalina were only occurred in September 2008 from the Yellow Sea, R. bergonii was appeared throughout the year from Korea Strait and Yangyang coasts, and R. setigera was abundantly showed in all seasons from all site. R. formosa is a newly recorded species in Korean coastal waters.

Distribution and migration of larval and juvenile sandfish Arctoscopus japonicus in the coastal waters off Gangwondo were determined monthly from samples collected by a rectangular bottom net in the coastal waters off Gangwondo from March to July, 2011. Fish were collected in abundance from the northern waters from March to June. The average total length (${\pm}SD$) was $11.5{\pm}1.6$ mm in March increased up to $53.5{\pm}3.3$ mm in June. The size distribution of sandfish by depth suggested that the fish grew waters less than 50 m deep until June, before moving deeper waters of around 100 m.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the amount of available wave power and its characteristics related to the development of apractical system for ocean wave energy conversion in Korean coastal waters. The analysis method of wave power was established through comparison between theory and numerical simulation of deep sea wave by Inverse Fourier Transform with random phase method. Based on the results of comparison, wave power was estimated by use of data set from observed offshore and coastal waves and hindasted deep sea waves around the Korean peninsula. Annual mean wave power is estimated as about 1.8 ~ 7.0 kW for every metre of wave frontage at East sea, 1.5~5.3 kW at South sea and 1.0 ~ 4.1 kW at West sea, respectively. Mean wave power along deep sea front of coastal waters of Korea amounts to about 4.7 GW. Regional distribution and seasonal variation of wave power were discussed to develop practical utilization system of wave power of not so high grade of available wave power.

Using the data observed on the Oshoro-maru from November 4 to November 12, 1989 in the East China Sea, the oceanographic conditions were investigated. The results are as follows: The oceanographic condition of surface layer was divided into two regions. One was the Tsushima Current Waters and the other was the China Coastal Waters. The oceanic front was formed between above two waters. Tsushima Current Waters had high temperature ranging 22~24$^{\circ}C$, high salinity ranging 33.5~34.5$\textperthousand$ and low D.O less than 4.5ml/l. And China Coastal Waters had low temperature ranging 18~2$0^{\circ}C$, low salinity less than 23.0$\textperthousand$ and high D.O ranging 4.0~5.0ml/l. In the case of the bottom layer, Tsushima Current Waters and China Coastal Waters appeared the same as the surface layer. In addition, the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Waters and the Southern Bottom Waters of East China Sea distributed together with two surface waters above. The was temperature ranging 15~19$^{\circ}C$, salinity 34.5$\textperthousand$ and low D.O ranging 2.0~3.5ml/l and that was temperature less than 1$0^{\circ}C$, salinity less than 33.3$\textperthousand$ and high D,O greater than 4.5ml/l. The waters of intermediate characteristics between China Coastal Waters and Tsushima Current Waters seem to be resulted from the mixing occurred between the above tow waters, and it had temperature of 20.5~22.$0^{\circ}C$, salinity of 32.3~33.3$\textperthousand$.
