  • In the coarse grained HAZ of conventional TiN steel, most TiN particles are dissolved and austenite grain growth easily occurrs during high heat input welding. To avoid this difficulty, thermal stability of TiN particles is improved by increasing nitrogen content in EH36-TM steel. Increased thermal stability of TiN particle is helpful for preventing austenite grain growth by the pinning effect. In this study, the mechanical properties and microstructures of high heat input welded Tandem EGW joint in EH36-TM steel with high nitrogen content were investigated. The austenite grain size in simulated HAZ of the steel at $1400^{\circ}C$ was much smaller than that of conventional TiN steel. Even for high heat input welding, the microstructure of coarse grained HAZ consisted of fine ferrite and pearlite and the mechanical properties of the joint were sufficient to meet all the requirements specified in classification rule.

  • Mass and elemental dry deposition fluxes and ambient particle size distributions were measured using dry deposition plates and a cascade impactor, from March to November 1998 in Seoul, Korea. During the spring sampling period several yellow sand events characterized by long range transport from China and Mongolia impacted the area. During these events the mass fluxes were statistically the same as during springtime non-yellow-sand events. However, most elemental fluxes were higher. In general, the flux ratios of both crustal (Al, Ca, Mn) and anthropogenic elements (Ni, Pb) to total mass measured during the daytime yellow-sand events were substantially higher than those measured in spring daytime during non-yellow-sand time periods. During all seasons the average measured daytime fluxes were about two times higher than at nighttime. The flux of primarily anthropogenic metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) and Mn was on average one to two orders of magnitude lower than the flux of the crustal metals Al and Ca. As is typically found two modes, fine (0.1∼l.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and coarse (1.0∼10.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$) were present in the measured size distributions (<10 $\mu\textrm{m}$). The particles in the coarse mode constitute a major portion of the measured mass size distribution during the yellow-sand events possibly due to the long-range transport of those particles from China.

  • The exposed aggregate PCC(EAP) pavements have been successfully used in Europe and Japan as low-noise pavements. Coarse aggregate are exposed on the pavement surface texture of EAP by removing mortar of surface. The pavement surface texture should maintain not only low-noise characteristic but also adequate skid resistance level during the performance period. Skid resistance decreased with wearing and polishing of tire and pavement surface due to the repetition of tire-pavement contact. Since the tires mainly contact the exposed coarse aggregate, the shape and rock type of coarse aggregate significantly influence wearing and polishing of EAP pavements. The test for resistance to abrasion coarse aggregate by use of the Los Angeles machine(KS F 2508) and the method of test for resistance to abrasion coarse aggregate by use of the Accelerated Polishing Machine(ASTM D 3319-90) are generally used to evaluate polishing characteristics of aggregate. In this study, polishing of coarse aggregate of different five rock types were evaluated by KS F 2508(LA abrasion test) and ASTM D 3319-90(PSV method). The results of LA abrasion test and PSV method were contrary to each other. Since LA abrasion test is estimated the quantity of abrasion by the impact of aggregate, it may not be adequate to evaluate the polishing of aggregate by the repetition of tire. In the case of PSV method, the resistance of polishing is estimated the skid resistance variation of polished aggregate after repetition of tire. The PSV method is adequate for the evaluation on polishing of coarse aggregate. From the test results of PSV method, it was founded that rock type, specific gravity, coarse aggregate angularity, flat or elongated particles in coarse aggregate are significant to the resistance characteristic of coarse aggregate.

  • The main objective of this study was to investigate the chemical characteristics of post-harvest biomass burning aerosols from field burning of barley straw in late spring and rice straw in late fall in rural area in Korea. 12-hr integrated intensive sampling of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ biomass burning aerosols had been conducted continuously at Gwangju, Korea 4-15 June 2001 and 8 October-14 November 2002. The fine and coarse particles of biomass burning aerosols were collected for mass, ionic, elemental, and carbonaceous species analysis. Average fine and coarse mass concentrations of biomass burning aerosols were measured to be 129.6, 24.2 ${{\mu}gm}^{-3}$ in June 2001 and 47.1, 33.2 ${{\mu}gm}^{-3}$ in October to November 2002, respectively. Exceptionally high level of $PM_{2.5}$ concentration up to 157.8 ${{\mu}gm}^{-3}$ well above 24-hour standard was observed during the biomass burning event days under stagnant atmosphere condition. During biomass burning periods dominant ionic species were $Cl^{-}$, ${NO_3}^{-}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$, and ${NH_4}^{+}$ in fine and coarse mode. In the fine mode $Cl^{-}$ and ${KCl}^{+}$ were unusually rich due to the high content of the semiarid vegetation. High OC values and OC/EC ratios were also measured during the biomass burning periods. Increased amount of fine aerosols with high enrichment, which were originated from biomass burning of post-harvest agricultural waste, resulted in extremely severe particulate air pollution and visibility degradation in the region. Particulate matters from open field burning of agricultural wastes cause great adverse impact on local air quality and regional climate.

  • Aerosol particles with different size-cuts ($PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_{1.0}$) were collected at Gosan Superstation on Jeju Island from August 2007 to June 2008. Mean concentrations of $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{1.0}$ were $29.28{\mu}gm^{-3}$, $17.83{\mu}gm^{-3}$, and $14.30{\mu}gm^{-3}$, respectively. Soluble ions comprised 45.7%, 53.9%, and 60.3% of the total mass of $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_{1.0}$, respectively. While sulfate was the most dominant species of fine mode ($PM_{1.0}$), nitrate was enriched in coarse mode ($PM_{1.0-10}$). When the concentrations of coarse mode particles were greatly increased, nitrate tended to be enhanced in coarse mode with high calcium but low sulfate concentrations. During the high $PM_{1.0}$ events, however, nitrate was increased with sulfate at fine mode. Particularly, nitrate concentrations were substantially enhanced during high particle episodes, leading high ratios of nitrate to sulfate in air under northwest wind during wintertime. On the other hand, the levels of nitrate were lower than those of sulfate at average particle concentrations. The backward air mass trajectories indicated that nitrate concentrations were elevated in air arriving Gosan passing through Santung peninsula or near South Korea.

  • The collection of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ fine particulate matter samples was made at the 1100 m site of Mt. Halla of Jeju Island, located at the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) of background area, during the fall of 2012. Their ionic and elemental species were analyzed, in order to investigate the chemical compositions and size distribution characteristics. In $PM_{2.5}$ fine particles ($d_p$ < $2.5{\mu}m$), the concentrations of the secondary formed nss-$SO{_4}^{2-}$, $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ species were 4.84, 1.98, and $1.27{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively, showing 58.2% of the total $PM_{2.5}$ mass. On the other hand, their concentrations in $PM_{10-2.5}$ coarse particles (2.5 < $d_p$ < $10{\mu}m$) were 0.63, 0.21 and $1.10{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively, occupying 22.8% of the total $PM_{10-2.5}$ mass. The comparative study of size distribution has resulted that $NH_4{^+}$, nss-$SO{_4}^{2-}$, $K^+$ and $CH_3COO^-$ are mostly existed in fine particles, and $NO_3{^-}$ is distributed in both fine and coarse particles, but $Na^+$, $Cl^-$, $Mg^{2+}$ and nss-$Ca^{2+}$ are rich in coarse particle mode.

  • Nitroarenes are ubiquitous environmental pollutants displaying potent mutagenicity in bacteria and carcinogenicity in mammal. In this study, the concentration of nitroarenes in coarse and fine particles and mutagenicity of POC$\_$N/ fraction was investigated in suspended particulates at the Shinchon and Bulkwang area of Seoul. The suspended particulates were collected bimonthly by a high volume cascade impactor air sampler from July 1987 to May 1988. Extractable organic matter was obtained by ultrasonic extraction on diethly ether/cyclohexane (8/2, v/v). Neutral fraction was obtained by liquid-liquid extraction. Polar neutral organic compounds (POC$\_$N/) was fractionated by thin-layer chromatography. Finally, the concentrations of nitroarenes in POC$\_$N/ fraction were measured and determined by capillary gas chromatography. Direct and indirect mutagenicity of POC$\_$N/ fraction were measured using Salmonella typhimurium TA 98. The result were as follows: 1) Major nitroarenes at the Shinchon area was 1-nitropyrene and at the Bulkwang area it was 2,7-dinitro-9-fluorenone during the year. 2) Average concentration of total nitroarenes measured was 67.26 ng/m$^3$in fine particles which was 1,3 folds higher that in coarse particle (52.30 ng/m$^3$). 3) Annual pattern of nitroarenes concentrations revealed that concentration during heating season (Feb., Jan., Mar.) was 2.2 folds higher than that in non heating season (May, Jul., Sep.). Concentration of each season has 157.68 ng/m$^3$and 80.39 ng/m$^3$. 4) The mutagenic activity of POC$\_$N/ fraction from fine particles was higher compared to that of coarse particles and was increased when metabolically activated, with 59 mixture. Mutagenicities, Metabolically activated, were significantly different between Shinchon and Bulkwang area, 322.8 rev/250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/plate and 286.8 rev/250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/plate, respectively. 5) Annual pattern of mutagenicity of POC$\_$N/ fraction revealed that mutagenicity during the heating season was 1.7 folds higher at Shinchon area and 1.2 folds higher at Bulkwang than during the non heating season. The variable contents and levels of nitroarenes in suspended particulates may affect human health significantly. Further studies such as risk assessment should be conducted on the basis of these kind of studies.

  • The experiments about dyeing concentration, temperature and time were done using yellow, red and purple loess as natural inorganic dyes in order to verify a degree of dyeing, characteristics of color and fastness. The results were as following; 1. As a result of analyzing components of loess, purple loess was much than other loess in quartz component and coarse particles contained. This affected to the degree of dyeing. 2. The stronger dyeing concentration was, the more the degree of dyeing was improved, and yellow loess containing fine particles was the best in the degree of dyeing. 3. When it was dyed with raising up to $100^\circ{C}$ for 10 minutes after stirring for 20 minutes at $60^\circ{C}$, was better than on starting at $40^\circ{C}$ or $80^\circ{C}$ in the degree of dyeing. Also yellow loess was the best in these experiments. 4. Washing fastness of loess was low such as other natural dyes, but dyeing wasn't transferred to other textiles. On the other hand, light fastness of it was very excellent and rubbing fastness was relatively good as 3~3.5.

  • Pilot-scale soil washing facility was developed and operation condition was determined in order to remediate a soil contaminated with As, Ni and Zn. Soil washing facility is composed of soil particle separation, soil washing and wastewater treatment process. Both oxyanionic As and cationic Ni and Zn were effciently removed using HCl rather 0than H$_2$SO$_4$ and H$_2$PO$_4$. This is why oxyanion and cation metals can be extracted simultaneously from the contaminated soil in acidic solution. Further, the contaminated soils include calcite and then demand much acidity, that is consumption of acid solution. Fine particles are enriched with contaminants, and coarse particles are removed effectively rather than fine particles. As, Ni and Zn are strongly associated with minerals, and then the residence time should be increased for a reaction with washing solution.

  • The effects of Si addition on the precipitation processes of in Al-Cu-Si alloy films were studied by the transmission electron microscopy. Deposition of an Al-1.5Cu-1.5Si (wt. %) film at $305^{\circ}C$ resulted in formation of fine, uniformly distributed spherical $\theta$-phase particles due to the precipitation of the $\theta$ and Si phase particles during deposition. For deposition at $435^{\circ}C$, fine $\theta$-phase particles precipitated during wafer cooldown, while coarse Si nodules formed at the sublayer interface during deposition. The film susceptibility to corrosion is discussed in relation to the film microstructure and deposition temperature.
