  • When the slurry of water and coal which is produced from hydraulic coal mining was dehydrated by COM(Coal Oil Mixtue), the effects of flocculant were measured by light transmittance of supernatant liquid, The experimental results obtamed m this study are summarized as follows; The efficient flocculant is anionic flocculant(AllO), and in this case, the required concentration is about l00g/t. When diesel oil is used with flocculant, COM is formed in lower impeller speed than when only diesel oil is used. The amout of diesel oil required to form COM is 10% of that of coal.

  • This study has been implemented to investigate various characteristics of coals which are imported from abroad. KIER has developed 1 T/D bench-scale unit, entrained-flow coal-slurry gasification technology to investigate the followings: 1) to assess the appropriate foreign coals for gasification. 2) to establish the data base for gasification phenomena, 3) to minimize the technical risks prior to introduction of commercial scaled IGCC power plant, 4) to develop essential key technologies and to establish operational experiences for coal gasification. The foreign coals used in the gasification are Cyprus and Alaska coals from U. S. A. Cyprus coal(bituminous) and Alaska coal (lignite) were shown about 1.29$0^{\circ}C$. The concentrations of coal-slurry for Cyprus were maintained up to 58%, 62% and 65% in order to enable to feed satisfactorily it into the gasifier without any other problems at feeding systems. However, the Alaska coal was unable to maintain slurry concentration over the 60% due to its high viscosity. During the experiments, $O_2/coal$ ratios in both coals ere maintained from 0.6~1.2, but especially Alaska coal was required excessive oxygen feed due to its high ingerent moisture contents. During the experiments with two different coals, the concentrations of syngas $(H_2+CO)$ were shown as 40~62%, and the heating value of syngas were detected as 1,400~2,050 kcal/N㎥

  • The purpose of this study is to get experimental data on the distribution of CWM (Coal- Water Mixture) droplets size and the presence of pulverized coal particles inside CWM droplets. Atomization of CWM is done by Twin-Fluid Atomizer. The operational parameters are atomizing air pressure, coal particle loading, mean size of pulverized coal particles and sampling positions across spray. Th data analysis is initiated by Impression Sampling Method(Magnesium Oxide Technique) and Photo-technique and counting works are followed. Experimental work induces following research results. The variation of particle loadings in slurry makes no appreciable effects on the mean size of CWM droplets. It is evident that atomizing air pressure has very strong effect on the atomization of slurry. The mean size of atomized fuel droplets is dramatically reduced with the increasing air pressure. The population ratio of droplets without coal particles to total number of droplets is decreased as atomizing air pressure or loading rises and the same trend is obtained as the mean size of coal particles becomes smaller but a certain tendency of coal particle presence inside droplets could not be found from the change of sampling positions.

  • This research was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of one- and dual-stage recycled-water systems in slurry bioreactor treatment for coal tar-contaminated soil. Silty loam soil was used for this research. Coal tar and 14 target PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) concentration in the soil were determined with gas chromatography. There was no significant difference between removal efficiencies of one- and dual-stage recycled water systems in case of about 4,000 mg coar tar/kg. However, the dual-stage system increased significantly the removal efficiency in case of about 20,000 mg coar tar/kg and the first-order kinetic constant of the system was over 1.5 times higher than that of one-stage recycled water system. 3-Ring compounds in PAHs was removed completely within 30 days of operation. Coar tar was removed in over 96% through biodegradation and removed in about 4% by evaporation. High correlation coefficient($r^2=0.91$) was found between water solubility and removal efficiency of the cyclic compounds.

  • As a way to evaluate the performance of IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) processes, heating values of coal gas as well as plant efficiency were compared for different rank coals and coal feeding methods by employing the static process simulation technique. Performance of the process was compared with coal rank that was varied by three assorted bituminous coals and also by three subbituminous coals, in addition to the two types of feeding techniques, i.e., dry-feeding and slurry-feeding, that are utilized in entrained-bed coal gasifiers. For the verification of the simulation technique, simulated results were compared first with the actual pilot plant data published from Shell and Texaco. The simulation technique was, then, applied to other coals. Result from tests varying coal rank exhibits the trend of improving both heating content of the product gas and plant efficiency with increasing carbon content in coal. The effect of coal rank is more sensitive in slurry-feeding cases compared to the dry-feeding cases. In particular, considering notably lower values in gas heating value and plant efficiency calculated in the slurry-feeding case that uses a subbituminous coal, limited utilization of the slurry-feeding method for subbituminous coals can be expected. From the plant efficiency point of view, dry-feeding method resulted in higher simulated efficiency values by maximum 3% for subbituminous coals and ca. l% for bituminous coals.

  • Oxy-gasification or oxygen-blown gasification, enables a clean and efficient use of coal and opens a promising way to CO2 capture. The coal gasification process of a slurry feed type, entrained-flow coal gasifier was numerically predicted in this paper. The purposes of this study are to develop an evaluation technique for design and performance optimization of coal gasifiers using a numerical simulation technique, and to confirm the validity of the model. By dividing the complicated coal gasification process into several simplified stages such as slurry evaporation, coal devolatilization, mixture fraction model and two-phase reactions coupled with turbulent flow and two-phase heat transfer, a comprehensive numerical model was constructed to simulate the coal gasification process. The influence of turbulence on the gas properties was taken into account by the PDF (Probability Density Function) model. A numerical simulation with the coal gasification model is performed on the Conoco-Philips type gasifier for IGCC plant. Gas temperature distribution and product gas composition are also presented. Numerical computations were performed to assess the effect of variation in oxygen to coal ratio and steam to coal ratio on reactive flow field. The concentration of major products, CO and H2 were calculated with varying oxygen to coal ratio (0.2-1.5) and steam to coal ratio(0.3-0.7). To verify the validity of predictions, predicted values of CO and H2 concentrations at the exit of the gasifier were compared with previous work of the same geometry and operating points. Predictions showed that the CO and H2 concentration increased gradually to its maximum value with increasing oxygen-coal and hydrogen-coal ratio and decreased. When the oxygen-coal ratio was between 0.8 and 1.2, and the steam-coal ratio was between 0.4 and 0.5, high values of CO and H2 were obtained. This study also deals with the comparison of CFD (Computational Flow Dynamics) and STATNJAN results which consider the objective gasifier as chemical equilibrium to know the effect of flow on objective gasifier compared to equilibrium. This study makes objective gasifier divided into a few ranges to study the evolution of the gasification locally. By this method, we can find that there are characteristics in the each scope divided.

  • Fry-drying of coal slurry is one of the upgrading low rank coal processes. It consists of slurry mixing, slurry dewatering, solvent recovery and briquetting. Cost estimation and economic feasibility are examined for the upgrading low rank coal process based on capacity of 1 million ton/yr. In case that investment costs are $100,000,000, discount rate is 12%, and service life is 20 years, the results of economic analysis are enough to satisfy the evaluation criteria of investment such as IRR, B/C ratio, NPV and discounted payback period. According to sensitivity analysis, investment value are very sensitive to raw material cost and product price. Since the bituminous coal price is currently soaring, it is expected that the investment value will increase more and more.

  • The atomizations of CWM slurry and water are done by a wheel atomizer which is designed and manufactured for this experiment. The variables of the experiment are the angle of vane, aspect ratio, particle loading and the mean size of coal particle distribution. The main purposes of the experiment are to know how the angle of vane and aspect ratio of vane influence the size distribution of CWM droplets. The experimental results say there are no appreciable effects on the mean size of CWM droplets from the change of loading of coal prticles in slurry. The mean size of coal particle in slurry, however, influence quite strongly the mean size of CWM droplets. The mean size of CWM droplets is quite strongly affected by the angle of vane. The size distribution of CWM droplets is controllable by the change of aspect ratio.

  • Spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were successfully prepared from petroleum or coal pyrolysis residues. After pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), slurry oil, and coal tar were simply filtered to eliminate the solid impurities, the characteristics of the raw materials were evaluated by elemental analysis, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), and so on. Spinnable pitches were prepared for melt-spinning carbon fiber through a simple distillation under strong nitrogen flow, and further vacuum distillation to obtain a high softening point. Carbon fibers were produced from the above pitches by single-hole melt spinning and additional heat treatment, for oxidization and carbonization. Even though spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were processed under the same conditions, the melt-spinning and properties of the carbon fiber were different depending on the raw materials. A fine carbon fiber could not be prepared from slurry oil, and the different diameter carbon fibers were produced from the PFO and coal tar pitch. These results seem to be closely correlated with the initial characteristics of the raw materials, under this simple processing condition.

  • The odours from spreading the slurry, manure storage tanks, and the stall are a source of annoyance for the neighbors and sometimes even become a case for civil appeal. Reducing the odourant and ammonia emission is an urgent need to be addressed. It is known that brown coal and oak charcoal have an ability to absorb odour. We designed an experiment set in lab scale and used the brown coal and oak charcoal as additives in the test to reduce odour. The test are divided into two categories; namely aeration and no-aeration. The additives were added to the each sample at a concentration of 5% and 10% of total base solids, besides the control samples. We carried out the Phenate Method for ammonia analyzing. In the non-aerated case, the results showed a reducing efficiency of 23.7% and 26.4% with an addition rate of 5% and 10% of additives, respectively. In the aerated test, the reducing efficiency of ammonia was 17.8% and 21.0% with an addition rate of 5% and 10% of additives, respectively. In case of oak charcoal, non-aeration showed removal efficiencies of ammonia at 15.9% and 16.1% with addition rates of 5% and 10%, respectively, With aeration, they were 11.4% and 26.4% with addition rates of 5% and 10% oak charcoal, respectively. The tests show that brown coal and oak charcoal have a reducing effect on ammonia emissions.
