Coal gasification experiments were performed to characterize the bench scaled unit of 0.5∼1.0 T/D entrained coal gasifier developed by KIER. Datong coal from China was selected for this study. The system was operated at the temperature range of 1300∼1550$^{\circ}C$, with 62.5% of coal water mixture on the basis of dry coal. Oxygen and slurry mixture were preheated prior to feeding into burner and the ratio of oxygen/coal was in the range of 0.8∼1.2. In the preparation of coal water mixture, 0.3 wt% of CWM1002 and 0.05 wt% of NaOH wire added to reduce viscosity as well as to enhance theological properties of slurry. The resultant gaseous products consist primarily of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and minor amounts of methane. Formation of H$_2$and CO was increased, while CO$_2$was decreased as the reacting temperature being increased due to the char-CO$_2$reaction. Maximum production of H$_2$and CO occurred in the O$_2$/coal ratio of 0.9 at 1530$^{\circ}C$. Heating values of product gases were in the range of 1700∼2400 kcal/N㎥.

The final purpose of this study is to examine the uses of coal ash, by-product from thermal power plant as a type of filling-embankment materials and the reuses of ash ponds. In this time, to investigate the dynamic properties, we made the test piece specimen with coal ashes, and obtained the damping ratio. In place(ash pond), the damping property by underground wall was investigated before and after soil improvements. The damping ratio of coal ash test piece specimen of 12% cement is the highest and that of 9% cement or chemical grout, that of 6% cement is in order. In same coal ash test piece, the damping ratio increases with decreasing the void ratio. In conclusion, it could be said that the damping ratio increases with the stiffness of materials. In the ash pond, the damping effect is the most when trench is set through the vibration wave propagation course, and when soil is improved the higher stiffness of the improved soil is, the more damping effect appeared. It is justified to obtain not only the dropping of permeability and the strength increase, but also the damping effect fairly by soil improvements.
The sulfating reaction of coal fly ash with ammonium sulfate and the microwave extraction of aluminum ions from the resultant materials using sulfuric acid have been investigated. The (NH$_4$)$_3$Al(SO$_4$)$_3$ formed by the reaction of coal fly ash and ammonium sulfate decomposed to NH$_4$Al(SO$_4$)$_2$ at $\geq$ 350$^{\circ}C$. The maximum efficiency of aluminum ions extracted from the sulfating reaction product (400$^{\circ}C$, 120 min) by microwave heating (90$^{\circ}C$, 240 min) using 1 M H$_2$SO$_4$ was 84% (based on Al content in coal fly ash) but 77% by conventional heating at same condition.
In this work, we constructed the sulfur-solidified materials using coal bottom ash from four thermal power stations in Korea and investigated their practical data for the production of industrial construction compounds. To manufacture the sulfur-solidified materials, we used a continuous mixer with the uniaxial screw-type. Also, coal bottom ash was used as a fine aggregate below 1.2 mm because of the operation characteristics for the continuous mixer. When the sulfur-solidified materials were produced with diverse sulfur concentrations (15, 20, 25, 30 wt%), compressive strength properties were analyzed. In addition, when the coal bottom ash was used with a high calcium oxide content, crack was found in the test product and pH of submerged liquid was above 12. These experimental results could be effectively applied to the recycling technology of coal bottom ash.
Granulated coal ash (GCA), a mixture of the by-product from milling processes with a small amount of cement added, has recently come to be used as a new form of geomaterial. The shear strength and deformation behaviours of GCA are greatly determined by its relative density or void ratio. A series of drained triaxial compression tests were performed on cylindrical specimens of GCA at confining pressures of between 50 kPa and 400 kPa at initial relative densities of 50%, 70% and 80%. Experimental results show that a rise in relative density increases the peak shear strength and intensifies the dilation behaviour. The initial tangent modulus and secant modulus of the stress-strain curve increase with increasing initial relative density, whereas the axial and volumetric strains at failure decrease with level of initial relative density. The stress-dilatancy relationships of GCA at different relative densities and confining pressures display similar tendency. The dilatancy behaviour of GCA is modelled by the Nova rule and the material property N in Nova rule of GCA is much larger than that of natural sand.

This study aims to introduce and review on the recovery technologies of rare earth elements(REEs) from coal ash. Many researchers have been carried out by various beneficiation processes, such as particle size separation, magnetic separation, specific gravity, and flotation to recover rare earth elements from coal ash generated from Pulverized Coal(PC) boiler. Through the beneficiation process, it was confirmed that concentration of rare earth elements was much lower than the 4,700 ppm, and that additional enrichment treatment through wet process was needed for the products recovered after the beneficiation process. It was confirmed that the rare earth elements contained in coal ash were applied to the leaching process after pretreatment such as alkali-fusion to improve leaching efficiency. Although beneficiation and leaching methods have been studied, its optimum recovery technologies for rare earth elements not been confirmed up to now, research on the recovery of rare earth contained in coal ash is reported to continue. In case of Korea, the technology for the recovery of rare earth elements from coal ash and coal by-product could not been confirmed up to present. In these reasons, it is urgent to develop technologies such as beneficiation and leaching process continuously.

This study assessed the feasibility of coal mine drainage sludge (CMDS) as a stabilizing agent for mercury contaminated soil through pot experiments and batch tests. In the pot experiments with 43 days of lettuce growth, the bioavailability of mercury in the amended soil and mercury content of the lettuce were decreased by 46% and 50%, respectively. These results were similar to those of the soil amended with the sulfide compound (FeS) generally used for mercury stabilization. Thus, CMDS could be an attractive mercury stabilizer in terms of industrial by-product recycling. Batch tests were conducted to examine mercury fractionation including reactions between the soil and acetic acid. The result showed that some elemental fraction changed to strongly bounded fraction rather than residual (HgS) fraction. This made it possible to conclude that mercury adsorption on oxides in CMDS was the major mechanism of stabilization.

In this study, concrete durability was reviewed before CGS, a by-product generated from IGCC, was used as a fine aggregate for concrete. The characteristics of concrete and effect on carbonization according to the type of pre-mixed cement and the CGS substitution rate were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the depth of carbonation according to the pre-mixed cement types increased by up to 52%, and the carbonation resistance tended to be similar overall when CGS was used as a fine aggregate.
The slowly released potassium fertilizer was developed by mixing fly ash with KOH, anthracite coal powder, KCI, $K_2CO_3$ and $Mg(OH)_2$ as the substances for accelerating calcination. Measuring proper ratios of raw materials, we found that the anthracite coal powder was 12 percent and $Mg(OH)_2$ was two to three percent. The optimal calcination temperature and time were proved to be $850^{\circ}C$ and 30 minutes, respectively, however, the trial product with lower temperature and shorter time in calcination had low quality. The K solubility of the product was very low compared to that of the KCl fertilizer.
Coal combustion by-product (CCB) bottom ash, obtained from burning of pulverized coal, has physical properties which are similar to that of natural sand with particle sizes ranging from fine gravel to fine sand. Several studies have been completed to utilize pulverized coal combustion (PCC) bottom ash as a partial or full replacement of fine aggregate in cement concrete products. The objectives of this study were to develop air-entrained concrete composites using PCC bottom ash from burning of Illinois coal and to demonstrate the use of these composites on real-world projects. The results obtained show that the compressive, splitting-tensile, and flexural strengths of concrete composites is slightly lower than that of conventional concrete are early curing ages. However, after 60 days of curing, the strength of concrete composites is either equal to or slightly higher than that of an equivalent conventional concrete. The concrete composites showed lower resistance to chloride ion penetrability than that of an equivalent conventional concrete at early curing ages. However, after 28 days of curing, concrete composites showed better resistance to chloride ion penetrability compared to that of an equivalent conventional concrete.
