  • The synthesis of pure and rare-earth doped gallium oxide (${\beta}-Ga_2O_3$) nanoparticles is reported. The synthesized nanoparticles are characterized with XRD, TEM, and PL analyses. Strong blue emission is observed from un-doped gallium oxide nanoparticles, while nanoparticles doped with $Eu^{3+}$ and $Tb^{3+}$ give strong red and green emissions, respectively. When doped with $Eu^{3+}$ and $Tb^{3+}$ together, gallium oxide nanoparticles emit white light. The CIE coordinate of the emitted light was found to be (0.33, 0.33), which is well within the white light region.

  • Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of intravenous isoniazid (H) and ethambutol (E) administered in patients with new sputum positive drug-susceptible pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) with tuberculous meningoencephalitis (TM) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection in the intensive phase of treatment. Methods: Fifty-four patients with TB/TM and HIV co-infection were enrolled for this study. Group 1 comprised of 23 patients treated with E and H intravenously, while rifampicin and pyrazinamide were prescribed orally. Group 2 consisted of 31 patients treated with the first-line anti-TB drugs orally. The concentrations of H and E in blood serum were detected using a chromatographic method. Results: A significant improvement in the clinical symptoms and X-ray signs in patients treated intravenously with H and E was observed and compared to group 2. The sputum Mycobacterium tuberculosis positivity was observed during the second month of the treatment in 25.0% of patients from group 1 and 76.1% of the patients from the control group (p=0.003). In addition, nine patients (39.1%) died up to 6 months when H and E were prescribed intravenously compared with 22 (70.9%) in group 2 (p=0.023). Conclusion: In TB/TM with HIV, the intravenous H and E treatment was more effective than oral H and E treatment at 2 months of intensive treatment in sputum conversion as well as in clinical improvement, accompanied by significantly higher mean serum concentrations. In addition, the mortality rate was lower in intravenous H and E treatment compared to oral treatment.

  • Background : Following several decades of decline, the incidence of tuberculosis has recent1y begun to increase in many countries of this the control of this disease has been impeded by the emergence of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The development of rapid diagnostic methods and effective new drugs are needed to control MDR-TB. One of the new drugs for MDR-TB is rifabutin (RBU) which has been known to be effective in some patients with MDR-TB. A few reports showed that some types of mutations of the rpoB gene, which were known to be present in 96-98% of rifampicin-resistant M. tuberculosis, were associated with the rifampicin-resistant but RBU-susceptible phenotype. This study was performed to investigate the correlation between RBU susceptibility and the patterns of rpoB gene mutations in Korean MDR-TB. Methods : Sixty-five clinical isolates of multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis, gathered from patients who visited the Asan Medical Center from July 1997 to June 1999, were investigated. Clinical responses to rifabutin-containing regimen were evaluated. An RBU susceptibility test and sequencing analysis of rpoB gene were performed, and the results were analyzed to confirm which mutations correlated with RBU-susceptible MDR-TB. Results : Fifty-three of 56 (95%) clinical isolates of MDR-TB had 60 mutations of the rpoB gene. The most frequent mutations were found at codon 531 (43%), and two mutations were combined in seven clinical isolates. Five of 53 (10%) clinical isolates showed the RBU-susceptible phenotype, and in them the characteristic patterns of point mutations were found at codon 509, 516, and 526. Conclusion : The frequency and pattern of mutations of the rpoB gene of Korean MDR-TB isolates were similar to those in western countries, where the prevalence of tuberculosis is low, but some show RBU-susceptible phenotypes. RBU-susceptible MDR-TB isolates showed the characteristic pattern of mutations of the rpoB gene which could be used to rapidly diagnose RBU susceptibility.

  • This study includes the efface of shielding gas types on $CO_2$ laser weldability of low carbon automotive galvanized steel. The types of shielding gas evaluated are He, $CO_2$, Ar, $N_2$, 50%Ar+50%$N_2$. The weld penetration, strength, formability(Erichsen test) of Laser weld are found to be strongly dependent upon the types of shielding gas used. Further, the maximum travel speed and flow rate to form a keyhole weld is also dependent upon types of shielding gas. The ability of shielding gas in removing plasma plume and thus increasing weld penetration is believed to be closely related with ionization/dissociation potential, which determine the period of plasma formation and disappearance. Further, thermal conductivity and reactivity of gas with molten pool also give strong effect on penetration and porosity formation which in turn affect on the formability and strength.

  • For the measurement of the change of respiration rate caused by the gas content of storage atmosphere which furnishes important data for the interpretation of ULO storage, GC was used. It has been shown that the respiration rate and respiratory heat generation rate of Fuji apple is more than doubled in normal low temperature storage when compared with ULO storage, and that in ULO storage the respiration rate and respiratory heat generation rate directly proportional to the concentration of O2 in storage atmosphere as well as inversely proportional to that of CO2. It was possible to establish a functional formula for the respiratory heat generation rate of Fuji apple in all the storage conditions in terms of u=-0.7638+0.0003 O2-0.0007 log(CO2)+0.1369 log(Tb) concerning temperature and the concentration of O2 and CO2

  • The materials applied to the aircraft fuselage, parts, and components must be verified by relative authorities in accordance with the procedures set by the airworthiness authority to achieve the aircraft type certification. There are no examples of domestic composite materials which were verified in order to be applied to aircraft structure. In this study, the composite material certification system of NCAMP, an American composite material standard certification organization, was reviewed and used as the fundamentals of the first aerospace composite material certification system in ROK(Fig 2,8). Also updated material certification documents were developed and confirmed by material certification engineers and inspectors. This aerospace composite material qualification system is intended to modernize the material certification system for AAM(Advanced Air Mobility) as well as aircraft and to enhance the understanding of related technicians and inspectors.

  • This study mainly focuses on urban regeneration project as a countermeasure to resolve climate change issues by analyzing the carbon-reduction effect of Jeonju test-bed cases. First, an urban regeneration project is designed for city, Jeonju by analyzing its environmental problems and potential improvement. Then, carbon emission and reduction amounts are evaluated for different businesses and scenarios. Carbon emission sources are classified according to a standard suggested by IPCC, and the emissions are calculated by various standard methods. The result shows that carbon emission amount in Jeonju test-bed is 102,149 tCO2eq. The fact that 70% of the emission from energy sector originates from buildings implies that urban regeneration projects can concentrate on building portions to effectively reduce carbon emission. It is also projected carbon emission will decrease by 3,826tCo2eq in 2020 compared to 2011, reduction mainly based on overall population and industry shrinkage. When urban regeneration projects are applied to 5 urban sectors (urban environment, land use, green transportation, low carbon energy, and green buildings) total of 10,628tCO2eq is reduced and 4,857tCO2 (=15.47%) when only applied to the green building sector. Moreover, different carbon reduction scenarios are set up to meet each goal of different sectors. The result shows that scenario A, B, and C each has 5%, 11%, and 15% of carbon reduction, respectively. It is recommended to apply scenario B to achieve 11% reduction goal in a long term. Therefore, this research can be a valuable guideline for planning future urban regeneration projects and relative policies by analyzing the present urban issues and suggesting improvement directions.
