  • This study has been carried out to investigate into some effects of Mn content with varying amounts and austenite grain size on hardenability in boron-added Fe-C-Cr-Mo alloy systems. (1) Austenite grains have been found to hardly grow in the temperature range of $900^{\circ}C$ to $950^{\circ}C$, whereas they grow rapidly in the temperature range of $975^{\circ}C$ to $1100^{\circ}C$. (2) Austenite grain growth is considerably small with increasing holding time at a given austenitizing temperature and is, in particular, hardly found to occur at a temperature of $900^{\circ}C$. (3) The hardenability improves ramarkably as Mn content is increased at three different austenitizing temperatures $900^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. (4) The maximum hardenability is obtained from steels A, B and C austenitized at the $900^{\circ}C$, although Mn content is varied in each specimen.

  • Wet chemical etching of stainless steel foil by aqueous ferric chloride solution was investigated in this study. Effects of various process parameters (e.g. etchant agitation rate, etchant temperature, $Fe^{3+}$ ion concentration, free HCl concentration, specific gravity, etc.) on the etch rate was first studied, and it was found that the etch rate of AK (aluminum-killed) steel, chromium metal and stainless steel (STS430J1L alloy) follows the pseudo-first order reaction equation. When the fatigue ratio of etchant was kept under 16%, sludge was not formed in the solution, and the etched surface showed smooth roughness. The etch rate decreases as Baume of etchant increases, but the effect of free HCl concentration on the etch rate turned out to be minimal. Experimental data were compared with the calculated results from modeled equation, showing very good agreement.

  • This study investigates the interfacial reaction between powder-metallurgy high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and cast aluminum. HEA pellets are produced by the spark plasma sintering of Al0.5CoCrCu0.5FeNi HEA powder. These sintered pellets are then placed in molten Al, and the phases formed at the interface between the HEA pellets and cast Al are analyzed. First, Kirkendall voids are observed due to the difference in the diffusion rates between the liquid Al and solid HEA phases. In addition, although Co, Fe, and Ni atoms, which have low mixing enthalpies with Al, diffuse toward Al, Cu atoms, which have a high mixing enthalpy with Al, tend to form Al-Cu intermetallic compounds. These results provide guidelines for designing Al matrix composites containing high-entropy phases.

  • High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are attracting attention because of their excellent properties and functions; however, they are relatively expensive compared with commercial alloys. Therefore, various efforts have been made to reduce the cost of raw materials. In this study, MIM is attempted using coarse equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi HEA powders. The mixing ratio (powder:binder) for HEA feedstock preparation is explored using torque rheometer. The block-shaped green parts are fabricated through a metal injection molding process using feedstock. The thermal debinding conditions are explored by thermogravimetric analysis, and solvent and thermal debinding are performed. It is densified under various sintering conditions considering the melting point of the HEA. The final product, which contains a small amount of non-FCC phase, is manufactured at a sintering temperature of 1250℃.

  • Electroless plating is widely utilized in engineering for the metallization of insulator substrates, including polymers, glass, and ceramics, without the need for the application of external potential. Homogeneous nucleation of metals requires the presence of Sn-Pd catalysts, which significantly reduce the activation energy of deposition. Therefore, rinsing conducted during Sn sensitization and Pd activation is a key variable for the formation of a uniform seed layer without the lack or excess of catalysts. Herein, we report the optimized rinsing process for the functionalization of Sn-Pd catalysts, which enables the uniform FeCo metallization of the glass fibers. Rinsing enables good deposition of the FeCo alloy because of the removal of excess catalysts from the glass fiber. Concurrently, excessive rinsing results in a complete removal of the Sn-Pd nucleus. Collectively, the comprehensive study of the proposed nanomaterial preparation and surface science show that the metallization of insulators is a promising technology for electronics, solar cells, catalysts, and mechanical parts.

  • High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have been reported to have better properties than conventional materials; however, they are more expensive due to the high cost of their main components. Therefore, research is needed to reduce manufacturing costs. In this study, CoCrFeMnNi HEAs were prepared using metal injection molding (MIM), which is a powder metallurgy process that involves less material waste than machining process. Although the MIM-processed samples were in the face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, porosity remained after sintering at 1200℃, 1250℃, and 1275℃. In this study, the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process, which considers both temperature (1150℃) and pressure (150 MPa), was adopted to improve the quality of the MIM samples. Although the hardness of the HIP-treated samples decreased slightly and the Mn composition was significantly reduced, the process effectively eliminated many pores that remained after the 1275℃ MIM process. The HIP process can improve the quality of the alloy.

  • Microstructure and magnetic properties of Sm-Co sintered magnet were investigated with the variation of Zr content and their solution treatment and aging temperatures. The fraction of eutectic structure and the size of eutectic area decreased with increasing x value of cast Sm(C $O_{.688-x}$F $e_{.242}$C $u_{.07}$Z $r_{x}$)$_{7.404}$ alloys. On the other hand, x=0.022 ingot had finer dendritic structure compared to the other alloys. The sintered magnet of Sm(C $O_{.688-x}$F $e_{.242}$C $u_{.07}$Z $r_{x}$)$_{7.404}$ had well defined cell structure which is composed of cell boundary Sm $Co_{5}$ and cell interior S $m_2$Co/ssub 17/ phase. Cell boundary Sm $Co_{5}$ phase has 20nm thickness and its relative angle was 120$^{\circ}$ in x=0.018 and 0.022 alloys. Cell size was decreased with increasing Zr contents. But, x=0.026 alloy has diffuse cell boundary and irregular shape compared to x=0.022 and 0.018 alloys. Maximum value of coercive force and maximum energy Product were obtained from x=0.022 alloys. Optimum solution treatment temperature of Sm(C $O_{.688-x}$F $e_{.242}$C $u_{.07}$Z $r_{x}$)$_{7.404}$ alloy was 1170 $^{\circ}C$ and 1st aging temperature of two step aging process for higher coercivity was 850 $^{\circ}C$.

  • Recently, the results of many studies have clarified the successful performance of magnetostrictive transducers in which a ferromagnetic patch is used for the transduction of guided shear waves; this is because a thin ferromagnetic patch with strong magnetostriction is very useful for generating and detecting shear wave. This investigation deals with bulk shear wave transduction by means of magnetostriction; on the other hand, the existing studies have been focused on guided shear waves. A modular transducer was developed; this transducer comprised a coil, magnets, and a thin ferromagnetic patch that was made of Fe-Co alloy. Some experiments were conducted to verify the performance of the developed transducer. Radiation directivity pattern of the developed transducer was obtained, and a test to detect the damage on a side drill hole of a steel block specimen was carried out. From the results of these tests, the good performance of the transducer for nondestructive testing was verified on the basis of the signal-to-noise ratio and narrow beam directivity.

  • In pressurized water reactors (PWRs), the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) upper head contains numerous control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) nozzles. In the last 10 years, the incidences of cracking in alloy 600 CRDM nozzles and their associated welds has increased significantly. Several axial and circumferential cracks have been found in CRDM nozzles in European PWRs and U.S. nuclear power plants. These cracks are caused by primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) and have been shown to be driven by welding residual stresses and operational stresses in the weld region. Therefore, detailed finite-element (FE) simulations for the Korea Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel have been conducted in order to predict the magnitudes of the weld residual stresses in the tube materials. In particular, the weld residual stress results are compared in terms for nozzle location, geometry factor$r_o$/t, geometry of fillet, and adjacent nozzle.
