  • Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. launched 'Samsung Super Insurance Package', an insurance policy combining household's property & casualty insurance policies, except insurance with savings and pension insurance, into one for the first time in Korea. The product was developed to tackle challenges and threats from environmental changes, whose success owes to an excellent marketing strategies like adopting MCS system which is coined to support sales force activities, and building SRC(Samsung Risk Consultant), the organization dedicated to the sales of the product. The case shows how Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. developed and successfully marketed the combined insurance policy for the first time in Korea identifying the key success factors and discusses its business implications and future challenges.

  • This paper focuses on a BOM(Bill of Materials) management problem for a small and medium manufacturing company that produce automobile parts. Automobile part's manufacturers produce various products due to various automobile characteristics such as types, colors, and the other options of car. These products are classified into product groups with common parts. And each product group is regarded as a product family. This paper proposes an efficient and effective EXCEL-based BOM management scheme using characteristics of the product family. And we have implemented the practical EXCEL-based BOM management system for real small and medium automobile part's manufacturing companies.

  • This study analyzed the strategic importance of fashionable products in order to increase the tourism allure of Seoul. Data were collected from the 758 foreign tourists visiting Seoul from Japan, China, and the USA. The survey was statistically analyzed by chi-square, regression, and ANOVA method. The fashionable products were found to be the most frequently shopped product category and the clothing product was identified to be the most preferred. The retail store area with the greatest market share was identified as Myundong. Product satisfaction with fashionable products is identified to have a positive relationship with tourism satisfaction and royalty to Seoul. A strategic focus on fashionable products is recommended for an increased tourism competency.

Nanophase Iron Clusters Produced by CO₂Laser Multiphoton-Decomposition of $Fe(CO)_5$ : Their Generation and Characterization

  • We have produced nanophase iron clusters inside a gas cell by decomposing iron pentacarbonyls from the mixture of ~20 Torr Fe(CO)5/~3 Torr SF6 with a pulsed CO2 laser. The product displayed a black tint. Its composition was identified to be mostly iron from an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) atomic emission spectrum. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates a body-centered cubic structure for the cluster. A transmission electron micrograph proves that their diameter ranges between 50 and 70 Å and their average diameter is 60 Å.

Preparation and Sound Insulation Properties of Thermoplastic Elastomer Composites with CaCO3 Filler (탄산칼슘 분말을 충진시킨 열가소성 탄성체 복합재의 제조 및 차음 특성)

  • Composites of ceramic powders and an elastomer-based matrix were prepared by mixing $CaCO_3$ powders with polyethylene and polypropylene elastomers, and their mechanical and sound insulation properties were measured. $CaCO_3$ powders with 0.7 ${\mu}m$ and 35 ${\mu}m$ particle size were added to elastomers up to 80 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy photographs showed uniform distribution of the $CaCO_3$ powders in the matrix. While density and surface hardness increased, melt index, tensile strength and elongation of the composites decreased as the amount of added $CaCO_3$ powders increased. As more $CaCO_3$ powders were added sound transmission loss of the composites increased owing to the increase of density. Addition of 0.7 ${\mu}m$ sized $CaCO_3$ powders resulted in a slightly higher transmission loss than the addition of 35 ${\mu}m$ sized powders because of the increased interface area between the elastomer matrix and the $CaCO_3$ powders. Composites with a polyethylene matrix showed higher transmission loss than those with a polypropylene matrix because the tensile strength and hardness of the polyethylene-based composites were low and their elongation was high.

  • A quartz type gasification reactor was designed and used for pyrolysis and gasification of sawdust, ricestraw and ricehusk. The initial reaction temperature was 350$^{\circ}C$, and up to 550$^{\circ}C$ to complete pyrolysis and gasification reaction. In order to examine the effect of catalyst on reaction temperature, $K_2CO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$ as catalyst were also used. The product gas mixtures are identified to be CO, $CO_2$, $CH_4$ and $CH_3CHO$ etc. by Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometer. The highest gas volume of the gasified sawdust at 550$^{\circ}C$ amounts to 1800ml/g of sawdust, even though the yield and composition of this product gas are depending on the reaction temperature of the reactor and catalyst used.

Stability of Chlorophyll during Processing and Storage of Salted Undaria Pinnatifida (염장(鹽藏)미역의 가공(加工) 및 저장조건(貯藏條件)과 Chlrophyll의 안정성(安定性))

  • A study on the stability of chlorophyll a in Undaria pinnatifida during blanching, salting and storage was carried out. Raw Undaria pinnatifida was blanched for 25 seconds in the temperature range of 70 to $100^{\circ}C$. To stabilize the chlorophyll a some chemicals such as 1% solutions of $Ca(CH_3CO_2)_2,{\;}Ca(OH)_2,{\;}MgCO_3,{\;}0.5%{\;}Ca(CH_3CO_2)_2$ with $0.5%{\;}MgCO_3$, and reed ash solution were used during/after blanching. The blanched product was salted with table salt after centrifuging for 2 minutes at 1500 rpm, and then again centrifuged after 48 hours for dewatering. The product which was mixed with 8% of table salt was sealed in a polyethylene film bag and stored at 10, 20, 30 and $40^{\circ}C$. The most effective blanching temperature for maximal residual amount of chlorophyll a was $85^{\circ}C$. The quantities of total organic and volatile acids were not significantly changed by the blanching temperature. Blanching in 1% chemical solutions showed bitter results than soaking in 1% chemical solutions for 20 minutes after blanching without chemicals. Reed ash and 0.5% $Ca(CH_3CO_2)_2$ with 0.5% $MgCO_3$ solutions were more effective than the 1% solutions of other chemicals, but the effect was not significant, compared with the group not treated with chemicals. The most reasonable ratio of added salt to dewater the product for 48 hours was 30% in w/w. The amount of total organic and volatile acids revealed no correlation with the amount of added salt. Color and odor of salted product was not severely changed during the storage of 77 days at $10^{\circ}C$. But the changes were accelerated with increasing storage temperatures. The degradation of chlorophyll a in salted product during storage could be interpreted as a first order reaction, and the rate constants at 10, 20, 30 and $40^{\circ}C$ were 0.1289, 0.1028, 0.0770 and 0.0550, respectively. $Q_{10}$ and the activation energy were 1.33 and 5.01 Kcal/g mole.

Comparison of organic acids supplementation on the growth performance, intestinal characteristics and morphology, and cecal microflora in broilers fed corn-soybean meal diet

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of three kinds of organic acid (OA) products on the growth performance, intestinal characteristics and morphology, and cecal microflora in broilers fed a corn-soybean meal meal diet. Methods: A total of 420 one-day-old male Cobb 500 broilers with an average initial body weight of 49.11±1.02 g were used in this 42-day experiment. Birds were randomly allotted to one of five treatments (7 replicates with 12 birds per replicate). Treatments consisted of negative control (NC), basal diet; positive control (PC), basal diet+100 mg/kg of Aviramycin; OA1, basal diet+500 mg/kg of OA product 1; OA2, basal diet+1,000 mg/kg of OA product 2; and OA3, basal diet+1,200 mg/kg of OA product 3. Results: The results indicated that OA product addition had no effect on growth performance parameters, such as body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio, from days 1 to 14, 15 to 28, and 0 to 42, or on the pH values of the intestine, intestinal weight, or intestinal weight to body weight ratio. The intestinal morphology in terms of villus height and crypt depth were affected by dietary supplementation of OA products, respectively. Furthermore, dietary addition of OAs had positive influences on the maintenance of the cecal microflora based on the results of 16S rRNA analysis. Conclusion: Dietary inclusion of three kinds of OA products all benefit broilers, but the mode of action may be different. This study provides a basis for the application of OA products used in the poultry industry.

A Study on Key Success Factors for the Concept-driven Product Innovation Strategy: a Case of the Slim-Phone development process (컨셉 주도형 제품혁신전략의 성공요인에 관한 연구: (주)VK 슬림폰 개발사례를 중심으로)

  • This paper examines critical successful elements related to the management of new product development process. For this, we have selected a VK-X100, slim bar type cellular phone, produced by VK mobile co., which was thought as a successful product development case and then analysed the case from a concept driven strategic product development's point of view. We have performed in-depth interviews with project managers, engineers and designers to get information on the product development process and analysed huge amount of data obtained from web-sites, global market indicators, and related firms' materials to find a changing trend of market conditions. The findings suggest that the successful new Product development and management is shaped by a number of different factors, such as the business environments, firm's technological level, firm's deep market insight capabilities, nature of the product development activities, and so on. Finally, we suggested the limitation of our research and further research subjects that would be required to support our findings.
