Three dimensional numerical analysis were performed to investigate the combustion characteristics in a tangentially fired pulverized coal boiler. The predicted values at the outlet of economizer for the gas temperature, O$_2$, NO, CO were been compared with the measured data. By using the actual operating conditions of the power plant, the distribution of velocity, gas temperature, O$_2$, CO, CO$_2$ and NO as well as the particle tracking in the boiler were investigated. Throughout the present study, the non-uniform distribution of flue gas temperature in front of the final superheater might be resulted from the residual swirl flow in the upper furnace of the boiler. The present analysis on non-uniform distribution of the gas temperature could provide the useful information to prevent the frequent tube failure from happening in the final superheater of the tangentially coal-fired boiler.
Considering the recent government policy toward North Korea and situation of power facilities in North Korea, it will be necessary to prepare for the consumption of the anthracite coal from Korea in coal-fired power plants. In this study, the anthracite co-fired tests in 500 MW thermal power plants were conducted with varying the main operation conditions, such as anthracite injection position in the boiler, coal fineness and combustion air flow, to investigate the effects on the generation of unburned carbon. It was confirmed that the generation of unburned carbon was remarkably reduced when the anthracite coal was injected into the boiler low burner with a relatively long residence time in the main combustion region, and that the increase of the coal fineness proportional to the combustion reaction surface area also reduces the generation of unburned carbon. An increase in the combustion air flow, which increase the combustion reactivity, also contributes to the reduction of unburned carbon. It is possible to maintain the unburned carbon generation below 5 % of the ash recycling quality by controlling the above operating conditions for the given mixing rate of anthracite, and the priority of changing the operating conditions within the test range is the highest for anthracite coal injection position.
Coal-fired power plants have used oil as fuel for start-up but plasma burner is recently introduced in order to reduce costs. It provides fuel oil-free start-up. But at initial operation of Plasma burner, an increase in unburned carbon remains as still pending issue. Also research and operational standards for this problem are insufficient. In this paper, operating procedure will be proposed through analyzing the impact of unburned carbon in accordance with the Plasma arc current. It is also possible to contribute to the national plant industry by demonstrating economics of Plasma burner in commissioning coal-fired power plants.
In this study, Economic analysis of supercritical coal-fired power plant with $CO_2$ capture process was performed. For this purpose, chemical absorption method using amine solvent, which is commercially available and most suitable for existing thermal power plant, was studied. For the evaluation of the economic analysis of coal-fired power plant with post-combustion $CO_2$ capture process in Korea, energy penalty after $CO_2$ capture was calculated using the power equivalent factor suggested by Bolland et al. And the overnight cost of power plant (or cost of plant construction) and the operation cost reported by the IEA (International Energy Agency) were used. Based on chemical absorption method using a amine solvent and 3.31 GJ/$tonCO_2$ as a regeneration energy in the stripper, the net power efficiency was reduced from 41.0% (without $CO_2$ capture) to 31.6% (with $CO_2$ capture) and the levelized cost of electricity was increased from 45.5 USD/MWh (Reference case, without $CO_2$ capture) to 73.9 USD/MWh (With $CO_2$ capture) and the cost of $CO_2$ avoided was estimated as 41.3 USD/$tonCO_2$.
Co-firing of renewable fuel in coal fired boilers is an attractive option to mitigate $CO_2$ emissions, since it is a relatively low cost option for efficiently converting renewable fuel to electricity by adding biomass as partial substitute of coal. However, it would cause reducing plant efficiency and operational flexibility, and increasing operation and capital cost associated with handling and firing equipment of renewable fuels. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of biomass co-firing on $CO_2$ emission and capital/operating cost. Wood pellet, PKS (palm kernel shell), EFB (empty fruit bunch) and sludge are considered as renewable fuels for co-firing with coal. Several approaches by the co-firing ratio are chosen from previous plant demonstrations and commercial co-firing operation, and they are evaluated and discussed for $CO_2$ reduction and cost estimation.

The present paper investigates the availability of seawater as the absorbents to capture carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) emitted from the coal fired power plant (CFPP). For the purpose of the study, readily obtainable alkali materials in CFPP such as coal fly ash (FA), NaOH and $Ca(OH)_2$ are added to seawater to prepare the absorbents and their $CO_2$ capture performances are discussed. FA can be effectively used the additives to increase $CO_2$ capture capacity of seawater to a some extent. This is ascribed that some alkali components in FA are leached into seawater and they contribute to $CO_2$ capture in the solution. However, their leaching amount and rate are restricted by the various ions in seawater. The performance of NaOH added seawater is even lower than that of NaOH added water because $OH^-$ is substantially consumed on $Ma(OH)_2$ production prior to carbonation. $CO_2$ absorption capacity of $Ca(OH)_2$ added seawater is slightly larger than that of $Ca(OH)_2$ added water. This is because that $Ca^{2+}$ which originally present in raw seawater can participate in carbonation reaction.
An existing unit of power plant is considered to refurbish it for possible application of carbon capture and storage(CCS). Conceptual design of the plant includes basic considerations on the national and international situation of energy use, environmental concerns, required budget, and time schedule as well as the engineering concept of the plant. While major equipment of the recently upgraded power plant is going to be reused, a new boiler for air-oxy fired dual mode operation is to be designed. Cryogenic air separation unit is considered for optimized capacity, and combustion system accommodates flue gas recirculation with multiple cleaning and humidity removal units. The flue gas is purified for carbon dioxide separation and treatment. This paper presents the background of the project, participants, and industrial background. Proposed concept of the plant operation is discussed for the possible considerations on the engineering designs.
In this study, performance and economic analysis of 500 MWe coal-fired power plant with $CO_{2}$ capture process was performed. For this purpose, chemical absorption method which is commercially available and most suitable for thermal power plant was studied and a criteria for technical and economic assessment of power plants suggested by IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme was used. And we performed the sensitivity analysis focused on regeneration energy which exceed half of the total capture energy. Based on MEA(Monoethanoleamine) as a main chemical solvent and 3.31 GJ/ton$CO_{2}$ regeneration energy in the stripper, net power efficiency was reduced from 41.0% (no capture) to 31.6%(with capture) and the cost of $CO_{2}$ avoided was estimated 43.3 $/ton$CO_{2}$. And in case of 2.0 GJ/ton$CO_{2}$ regeneration energy, the cost of $CO_{2}$ avoided was calculated as 36.7 $/ton$CO_{2}$.
Ligneous biomass such as wood pellet is characterized as carbon neutral which has no carbon dioxide emission ; additionally, it can be used as an alternative fuel by co-firing without additional plant reformation as well as for maintaining stability of fuel supply. We can develop CDM project while co-firing by using biomass into conventional coal fired thermal power plant with AM0085 CDM methodology, and it's possible to prove additionality as fuel cost per kWh is higher than bituminous. The study shows that the electricity by biomass can reduce green house emission by $0.6737tCO_2$ per MWh.
The purpose of this study is to make an economic analysis of power plant utilities by examining electricity generating costs with environmental consideration. Economic growth has caused pollutant emission, and subsequent environmental pollution has been identified as a very real limit to sustainable development. Considering the enormous role of electricity in the national economy, it is thus very important to study the effect of environmental regulations on the electricity sector. Because power utilities need large investments during construction, operation and maintenance, and also require much construction lead time. Economic analysis is the very important process in the electric system expansion planning. In this study, the levelized generation cost method is used in comparing economic analysis of power plant utilities. Among the pollutants discharged of the electricity sector, this study principally deals with the control activities related only to $CO_2$, and $NO_2$, since the control cost of $SO_2$, and TSP (Total Suspended Particulates) is already included in the construction cost of utilities. The cost of electricity generation in a coal-fired power plant is compared with one in an LNG combined cycle power plant. Moreover this study surveys the sensitivity of fuel price, interest rate and carbon tax. In each case, this sensitivity can help to decide which utility is economically justified in the circumstance of environmental regulations.
