  • Modem soft computing methods, such as neural networks, evolutionary models and fuzzy logic, are mainly inspired by the problem solving strategies the biological systems use in nature. As such, the soft computing methods are fundamentally different from the conventional engineering problem solving methods, which are based on mathematics. In the author's opinion, these fundamental differences are the key to the full understanding of the soft computing methods and in the realization of their full potential in engineering applications. The main theme of this paper is to discuss the fundamental differences between the soft computing methods and the mathematically based conventional methods in engineering problems, and to explore the potential of soft computing methods in new ways of formulating and solving the otherwise intractable engineering problems. Inverse problems are identified as a class of particularly difficult engineering problems, and the special capabilities of the soft computing methods in inverse problems are discussed. Soft computing methods are especially suited for engineering design, which can be considered as a special class of inverse problems. Several examples from the research work of the author and his co-workers are presented and discussed to illustrate the main points raised in this paper.

  • The detection of free spaces between obstacles in a scene is a prerequisite for navigation of a mobile robot. Especially for stereo vision-based navigation, the problem of correspondence between two images is well known to be of crucial importance. This paper describes multi-range approach of area-based stereo matching for grid mapping and visual navigation in uncertain environment. Camera calibration parameters are optimized by evolutionary algorithm for successful stereo matching. To obtain reliable disparity information from both images, stereo images are to be decomposed into three pairs of images with different resolution based on measurement of disparities. The advantage of multi-range approach is that we can get more reliable disparity in each defined range because disparities from high resolution image are used for farther object a while disparities from low resolution images are used for close objects. The reliable disparity map is combined through post-processing for rejecting incorrect disparity information from each disparity map. The real distance from a disparity image is converted into an occupancy grid representation of a mobile robot. We have investigated the possibility of multi-range approach for the detection of obstacles and visual mapping through various experiments.

  • We have identified the paradigm, the knowledge structure, and the roles of S&T policy studies in Korea by empirical analysis and focus group interviews. First, it provisionally concluded that S&T policy studies in Korea are still in the pre-paradigm stage. Specifically, the level of consensus among scholars about the "academic definition of discipline" and "research scope", which is essential for an independent discipline, is still low. Next, a great part of the existing S&T policy studies in Korea is excessively weighted in specific research scopes and researcher groups. For a balanced development as an academic discipline, such imbalance must be overcome. Third, the studies in Korea showed that much of the research in the earlier stage was fragmented at the micro-level. More recently, however, S&T policy studies show co-evolutionary patterns, which increase the responsiveness of the society. Based on this analysis, the future direction of studies should form a unique flow of our own, building Korean policy cases and models rather than following those developed countries.

  • We have investigated the properties of the high-latitude cloud MBM 7 using the 3 mm transitions of CO, CS, HCN, $HCO^+,\;C_3H_2,\;N_2H^+$, and SiO. The molecular component of MBM 7 shows a very clumpy structure with a size of $\le$0.5 pc, elongated along the northwest-southeast direction, perpendicularly to an extended HI component, which could be resulted from shock formation. We have derived physical properties for two molecular cores in the central region. Their sizes are 0.1-0.3 pc and masses 1-2 M$\bigodot$ having an average volume density $\~2{\times}10^3 cm^{-3}$ at the peak of molecular emission. We have tested the stability of the cores using the full version of the virial theorem and found that the cores are stabilized with ambient medium, and they are expected not to be dissipated easily without external perturbations. Therefore MBM 7 does not seem to be a site for new star formation. The molecular abundances in the densest core appear to be much less (by about one order of magnitude) than the 'general' dark cloud values. If the depletions of heavy elements are not significant in the HLCs compared with those in typical dark clouds, our results may suggest different chemical evolutionary stages or different chemical environments of the HLCs compared with dense dark clouds in the Galactic plane.

  • Human karyopherin ${\beta}3$, highly homologous to a yeast protein secretion enhancer (PSE1), has often been reported to be associated with a mediator of a nucleocytoplasmic transport pathway. Previously, we showed that karyopherin ${\beta}3$ complemented the PSE1 and KAP123 double mutant. Our research suggested that karyopherin beta has an evolutionary function similar to that of yeast PSE1 and/or KAP 123. In this study, we performed yeast two-hybrid screening to find a protein which would interact with karyopherin ${\beta}3$ and identified apolipoprotein A-I (apo A-I), a secretion protein with a primary function in cholesterol transport. By using in vitro binding assay, co-immunoprecipitation, and colocalization studies, we defined an interaction between karyopherin ${\beta}3$ and apo A-I. In addition, overexpression of karyopherin ${\beta}3$ significantly increased apo A-I secretion. These results suggest that karyopherin ${\beta}3$ plays a crucial role in apo A-I secretion. These findings may be relevant to the study of a novel function of karyopherin ${\beta}3$ and coronary artery diseases associated with apo A-I.

  • In a super-large underground with "large span and high side wall", it is buried in mountains with uneven lithology, complicated geostress field and developed geological structure. These surrounding rocks are more susceptible to stability issues during the construction period. This paper takes the left bank of Baihetan hydropower station (span is 34m) as a case study example, wherein the deformation mechanism of surrounding rock appears prominent. Through analysis of geological, geophysical, construction and monitoring data, the deformation characteristics and factors are concluded. The failure mechanism, spatial distribution characteristics, and evolution mechanism are also discussed, where rock mechanics theory, $FLAC^{3D}$ numerical simulation, rock creep theory, and the theory of center point are combined. In general, huge underground cavern stability issues has arisen with respect to huge-scale and adverse geological conditions since settling these issues will have milestone significance based on the evolutionary pattern of the surrounding rock and the correlation analyses, the rational structure of the factors, and the method of nonlinear regression modeling with regard to the construction and development of hydropower engineering projects among the worldwide.

  • Optimizing composite structures to exploit their maximum potential is a realistic application with promising returns. In this research, simultaneous maximization of the fundamental frequency and frequency separation between the first two modes by optimizing the fiber angles is considered. A high-fidelity design optimization methodology is developed by combining the high-accuracy of finite element method with iterative improvement capability of metaheuristic algorithms. Three powerful nature-inspired optimization algorithms viz. a genetic algorithm (GA), a particle swarm optimization (PSO) variant and a cuckoo search (CS) variant are used. Advanced memetic features are incorporated in the PSO and CS to form their respective variants-RPSOLC (repulsive particle swarm optimization with local search and chaotic perturbation) and CHP (co-evolutionary host-parasite). A comprehensive set of benchmark solutions on several new problems are reported. Statistical tests and comprehensive assessment of the predicted results show CHP comprehensively outperforms RPSOLC and GA, while RPSOLC has a little superiority over GA. Extensive simulations show that the on repeated trials of the same experiment, CHP has very low variability. About 50% fewer variations are seen in RPSOLC as compared to GA on repeated trials.

  • A series of numerical MHD simulations are performed to investigate the evolution of coronal magnetic fields consisting of two flux ropes and an overlying field. Depending on the directions of the axial current and the axial field, two co-helicity cases and two counter-helicity cases are addressed. In Case 1, in which both the axial currents and the axial fields are parallel, flux rope merging bears a huge flux rope with a large winding number. This flux rope naturally erupts, but the whole evolutionary process is rather slow. In Case 2, in which the axial currents are parallel while the axial fields are antiparallel, a self-closed structure is formed and it drives eruption. In Case 3, in which the axial currents are antiparallel and the axial fields are parallel, each flux rope erupts independently and the presence of the other flux rope does not affect the eruption of one flux rope. In Case 4, in which both the axial currents and the axial fields are antiparallel, interaction of the flux ropes and the overlying field effects a breakout reconnection creating an apple-like CME configuration. Our study tells what kind of eruption mechanisms are involved for different eruption features observed.

  • The major concern of e-learning environment design is to create and improve artifacts that support human learning. To facilitate effective and efficient learning, e-learning environment designers focused on the contemporary information technologies. Web 2.0 services, which empower users and allow the inter-transforming interactions between users and information technologies, have been increasingly changing the way that people learn. By adapting these Web 2.0 technologies in learning environment, educational technology can facilitate learners' abilities to personalize learning environment. The main purpose of this study is to conceptualize comprehensively constructs for understanding the inter-transforming relationships between learner and learning environment and mutable learning environments' impact on the process through which learners learn and strive to shape their learning environment. As results, this study confirms conceptualization of four constructs by incorporating aspects of design that occur in e-learning environments with Web 2.0 technologies. First, learner-designer refers to active and intentional designer who is tailoring an e-learning environment in the changing context of use. Second, learner's secondary design refers to learner's design based on the primary designs by design experts. Third, transactional interaction refers to learner's inter-changeable, inter-transformative, co-evolutionary interaction with technological environment. Fourth, trans-active learning environment refers to mutable learning environment enacted by users.
