This research examines the effect of adding aluminum on the structural, phasic, and magnetic properties of CoCrFe NiMnAlx high-entropy alloys. To this aim, the arc-melt process was used under an argon atmosphere for preparing cast samples. The phasic, structural, and magnetic properties of the samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and vibrational magnetometry (VSM) analyses. Based on the results, the addition of aluminum to the compound caused changes in the crystalline structure, from FCC solid solution in the CoCrFeNiMn sample to CoCrFeNiMnAl BBC solid solution. It was associated with changes in the magnetic property of CoCrFeNiMnAlx high-entropy alloys, from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic. The maximum saturation magnetization for the CoCrFeNiMnAl casting sample was estimated to be around 79 emu/g. Despite the phase stability of the FCC solid solution with temperature, the solid solution phase formed in the CrCrFeNiMnAl high-entropy compound was not stable, and changed into FCC solid solution with temperature elevation, causing a reduction in saturation magnetization to about 7 emu/g.

The solubility of Cr in cubic carbides in the systems WC-Co-TaC and WC-Co-ZrC has been determined using equilibrium samples. Thermodynamic calculations were used to design the alloys through extrapolations of Gibbs energy expressions. The alloys were designed to have a microstructure containing the following phases: WC, liquid, $M_7C_3$, graphite and cubic carbide. The alloys were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The present work shows how the Cr solubility depends on which cubic carbide former that is present. The WC-Co-Cr-Zr alloy has no detectable amount of Cr whereas the WC-Co-Cr-Ta alloy has 12% Cr in the cubic carbide.
Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the corrosion resistance of metal ions of alloys and use the results as the dental health data. These were performed by examining the corrosion levels of Co-Cr alloys for the full and removable partial denture metal frameworks and porcelain-fused-to-metal crown, among the dental casting nonprecious alloys. Methods: The alloy specimens (N = 10) were manufactured in $15mm{\times}10mm{\times}1.2mm$ and stored in two types of corrosive solutions at $37^{\circ}C$ for seven days. The metal ions were quantitatively analyzed using the Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer. Results: Of the three Co-Cr alloys, the Co ion concentration of the porcelain-fused-to-metal alloy was 1.512 ${\mu}g/cm^2$, which indicated the highest metal ion dissolution. The metal corrosion was higher in the more acidic pH 2.2 solution compared with the pH 4.4 solution. In all three Co-Cr alloys, Co ion dissolution was predominant in the two corrosive solutions. Conclusion: The corrosion resistance of the three Co-Cr alloys was high, indicating a good biocompatibility.
Model alloys Fe-9Cr, Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni (wt. %) with 0.1 and 0.2 % Si were exposed to $Ar-20CO_2-20H_2O$ gas at $818^{\circ}C$. The undoped alloys formed a thick iron-rich oxide scale. The additions of Si reduced scaling rates of Fe-9Cr to some extent but significantly suppressed the formation of iron oxide scales on Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni. Carburisation also occurred in all undoped alloys, but not in Si-containing Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni. Protection against carburisation was a result of the formation of an inner scale layer of silica.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to observe the surface roughness and surface topography of cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr) alloys with grinding time in dental barrel finishing. Methods: This study involved two types of Co-Cr alloys. Specimens were manufactured with the dimensions 10×10×2 mm. Each specimen was cast according to the manufacturer's instructions. The cast alloys were polished for 35 minutes at intervals of five minutes in an automatic barrel finishing. Specimens were imaged with a three-dimensional optical microscope to measure surface roughness. Results: BC specimens and GM specimens had the highest roughness (Ra) values in the ungrained control group, and the lowest Ra values were measured 20 minutes after grinding. Conclusion: The best conditions for grinding Co-Cr alloy using a dental barrel finishing were a weight ratio of polishing media, water, and compound of 150 g:200 g:5 g, and a rotation speed of 450 rpm. Grinding time to obtain appropriate surface roughness should be limited to 15 to 30 minutes.
Amorphous $Fe_{68.5}Co_5M_3Cu_1Si_{13.5}B_9(M=Nb, Mo, Mn, Cr)$ alloys were prepared by using rapidly quenching techinque and were annealed above their crystallization temperatures. Coercive force, initial permeability and AC power loss of the annealed $Fe_{68.5}Co_5M_3Cu_1Si_{13.5}B_9(M=Nb, Mo, Mn, Cr)$ alloys have been studied systematically. Nanocrystallines are formed in the annealed alloys which include Mo and Nb. Remarkably improved soft magnetic properties are obtained in the alloys whose average grain size is around 10 nm. However, soft magnetic properties of the alloys are degraded when grain size is less than IOnm or larger than 15nm. It is considered that the degradation of soft magnetic properties in the alloys whose average grain size is less than 10 nm is due to the Fe-rich amorphous phase retained at grain boundary during the initial crystallization process.

Lattice structure, hydrogen absorption characteristics, discharge capacity and cycle life of $V_{22}Ti_{16}Zr_{16}Ni_{39}X_7$(X= Cr, Co, Fe, Mn, Al) alloys were investigated. The matrix phases of these alloys were the C14 Laves phase. Chromium-containing alloy had a vanadium-rich phase in addition to the Laves phase. The chromium, maganese, or aluminum-containing alloys had lower hydrogen equilibrium pressure and larger hydrogen absorption content than the cobalt or iron-containing alloys. The discharge capacities of these alloys were 270~330mAh/g. The discharge capacity according to the alloying element X decreased in the order of Mn>Cr>Co, Al)Fe. The charge/discharge cycle lives of the chromium, cobalt or iron-containing alloys were longer than those of maganese or aluminum-containing alloys due to the lower vanadium dissolution rate.

The defects of partial denture frameworks are mainly shrinkage porosity, inclusions, micro-crack, particles from investment, and dendritic structure. In order to investigate a good casting condition of partial denture frameworks, the three casting alloys and casting methods were used and detected casting defects were analyzed by using electrochemical methods. Three casting alloys (63Co-27Cr-5.5Mo, 63Ni-16Cr, 63Co-30Cr-5Mo) were prepared for fabricating partial denture frameworks with various casting methods; centrifugal casting (Kerr, USA), high frequency induction casting (Jelenko Eagle, USA), vacuum pressure casting (Bego, Germany). The casting temperature was $1,380^{\circ}C$ (63Co-27Cr-5.5Mo and 63Ni-16Cr) and $1,420^{\circ}C$ (63Co-30Cr-5Mo). The casting morphologies were analyzed using FE-SEM and EDX. The corrosion test of the dendritic structure was performed through potentiodynamic method in 0.9% NaCl solutions at $36.5^{\circ}C$ and corrosion surface was observed using SEM. The defects of partial denture frameworks improved in the order of centrifugal casting, high frequency induction casting, and vacuum pressure casting method, especially, pore defects were found at part of clasp in the case of centrifugal casting method. The structure of casting showed dendritic structure for three casting alloys. In the 63Co-27Cr-5.5Mo and 63Co-30Cr-5Mo, $\alpha$-Co and $\varepsilon$-Co phases were identified at matrix and $${\gamma}$-Ni_2$Cr second phase were shown in 63Ni-16Cr. Also, the corrosion resistance of cast structure increased in the order of vacuum pressure casting, high frequency induction casting, and centrifugal casting method.
Purpose: This study was to assess the extents of the release of metals from the non-precious alloys used for dental casting by measuring the differences in the extents of the release of metals by types of alloys, pH level and elapsed time. Methods: Uniform-sized specimens(10 each) were prepared according to the Medical Device Standard of the Korea Food and Drug Administration(2010) and International Standard Organization(ISO22674, 2006), using four types of alloys(one type of Ni-Cr and one type of Co-Cr used for fixed prosthesis, and one type of Ni-Cr and one type of Co-Cr used for removable prosthesis). A total of 12 metal-release tests were performed at one-day, three-day, and two-week intervals, for up to 20 weeks. The metal ions were quantified using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer. Results: The results showed that the extent of corrosion was higher in the ascending order of Jdium-$100^{(R)}$, Bellabond-$Plus^{(R)}$, Starloy-$C^{(R)}$, and Biosil-$F^{(R)}$. The lower the pH and the longer the elapsed time were, the greater the increase in metal corrosion. At pH 2.4, the release of Ni from Jdium-$100^{(R)}$, a Ni-Cr alloy, was up to 15 times greater than the release of Co from the Co-Cr alloy from two weeks over time, indicating that the Ni-Cr alloy is more susceptible to corrosion than the Co-Cr alloy. Conclusion: It is recommended that Co-Cr alloy, which is highly resistant to corrosion, be used for making dental prosthesis with a non-precious alloy for dental casting, and that non-precious alloy prosthesis be designed in such a way as to minimize the area of its oral exposure. For patients with non-precious alloy prostheses, a test of the presence or absence of periodontal tissue inflammation or allergic reaction around the prosthesis should be performed via regular examination, and education on the good management of the prosthesis is needed.

Selective laser melting (SLM) manufactures an alloy using laser as a heat source, and has recently been introduced in the dental industry. However, there is a lack of analytical research on metal-ceramic restorations achieved by SLM. This study evaluates and compares the metal-ceramic bond strength of Co-Cr alloys produced by selective laser melting and casting methods. Co-Cr samples required for this study were produced through the sintering process of ceramics, by applying the SLM and CAST methods. The metal-ceramic bond strength was measured by applying the shear bond strength test. In order to determine the area fraction of adherent ceramic, Si content of the specimen was measured using scanning electron microscopy SEM/ EDS. Results of the metal-ceramic bond strength and AFAC were analyzed by t-test (α = 0.05). No significant difference was observed comparing the bond strength of SLM and CAST Co-Cr alloys (P> 0.05). However, the SLM group had much better ceramic adherence than the CAST group (P < 0.001). Moreover, oxidation characteristics were similar for both SLM and CAST Co-Cr alloys, but metal structures were different. These results imply that although the bond of ceramic and Co-Cr alloy is not related to the manufacturing method, SLM alloys impart better ceramic adherence. This indicates that alloys made with SLM can be used to fabricate upper implant prostheses in the future. In particular, it is expected to overcome the shortcomings of the CAST method, and save time and cost.
