  • The microstructural features of FeCoCrNi, FeCoCrNiAl and FeCoCrNiSix (x=0, 5, 10, 15, 20) alloys have been investigated in the present study. The microstructure of FeCoCrNi alloy changes dramatically with equiatomic addition of Al. The fcc irregular shaped grain structure in the as-cast FeCoCrNi alloy changes into the bcc interconnected structure with phase separation of Al-Ni rich and Cr-Fe rich phases in the as-cast FeCoCrNiAl alloy. The microstructure of FeCoCrNi alloy changes with the addition of Si. With increasing the amount of Si, the fcc structure of the grains is maintained, but new phase containing higher amount of Si forms at the grain boundary. As the amount of Si increases, the fraction the Si-rich grain boundary phase increases.

  • Thin films of $Si0_2(1000{\AA})/CoNiCr(400{\AA})/Cr$ were fabricated as a function of Cr thickness by KF magnetron sputtering. The saturation magnetization, coercive force and squareness with annealing temperature for these films were investigated. The values of saturation magnetization of $SiO_2/CoNiCr/Cr$ thin films decreased as the thickness of Cr underlayer increased, whereas coercive force increased as the thickness of Cr underlayer increased. The value of Ms was 600 emu/cc and the maximum value of Hc was 550 Oe. Especially, the value of saturation magnetization was rapidly decreased $SiO_2/CoNiCr/Cr(1700{\AA})$ thin films as the annealing temperature increased And the coercive force increased as the annealing temperature increased When annealing temperature was $650^{\circ}C$, the Ms was reduced to 90 % of the as-deposited film. And the Hc was showed maximum 1600 Oe. It was thought that Cr diffusion into CoNiCr layer reduced the magnetic moment of CoKiCr layer. In addition. Hc might he increased due to grain growth perpendicular to the film plane.

  • The effects of $Co_{67}$C $r_{33}$ underlayer on the crystallographec and magnetic characteristics of the Co-Cr-Ta layer deposited on the underlayer was investigated. The diffraction intensity $I_{p(002)}$ of Co-Cr-Ta layers on the $Co_{67}$C $r_{33}$ layer was stronger than that of single layer and Co-Cr-Ta/Ti double layer. Therefore, the crystallinity of Co-Cr-Ta layer was improved by the $Co_{67}$C $r_{33}$ underlayers rather than Ti ones. However, the coercivity $H_{c}$ of Co-Cr-Ta layers deposited on $Co_{67}$C $r_{33}$ underlayer was as low as 250 Oe even at substrate temperature of 22$0^{\circ}C$. This $H_{c}$ decrease seems to be attributed to the effect of the $Co_{67}$C $r_{33}$ underlayer as well as interval time between deposition of the underlayer and the Co-Cr-Ta layer.yer.layer.yer.

  • In this study, the effect of addition of Ti and Co elements on microstructural evolution and characteristics of vacuum-casted Cu-25%Cr electrical contact material was investigated. The coarse and insoluble Cr phases with an average size of 300 ㎛ in commercial Cu-25%Cr alloy were reduced to tens of micrometers in vacuum casted Cu-25%Cr-X(X=Ti, Co) alloy, which can be interpreted as result controlling coarsening and the work-frame structure of the insoluble Cr phase by the formation of intermetallic compounds such as Cr2Ti or Cr0.5Co1.5Ti around the Cr phase As a result, the electrical properties such as weight loss and fusion resistance against the repeated arc generation of the electrical contact material as well as the mechanical properties were greatly improved.

  • Cobalt-Chromium (Co-Cr) alloys are classified as predominantly base-metal alloys and are widely known for their biomedical applications in the orthopedic and dental fields. In dentistry, Co-Cr alloys are commonly used for the fabrication of metallic frameworks of removable partial dentures and recently have been used as metallic substructures for the fabrication of porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations and implant frameworks. The increased worldwide interest in utilizing Co-Cr alloys for dental applications is related to their low cost and adequate physico-mechanical properties. Additionally, among base-metal alloys, Co-Cr alloys are used more frequently in many countries to replace Nickel-Chromium (Ni-Cr) alloys. This is mainly due to the increased concern regarding the toxic effects of Ni on the human body when alloys containing Ni are exposed to the oral cavity. This review article describes dental applications, metallurgical characterization, and physico-mechanical properties of Co-Cr alloys and also addresses their clinical and laboratory behavior in relation to those properties.

  • The general requirements of recording media include recording performance, environmental stability, runnability on the drive or deck, and manufacturability. CoCrMo thin films were prepared using RF sputtering system for a study on chemical stability. Surface degradation of the CoCrMo thin film was studied by SEM, XPS and AES. Surface degradation was found to be dependent of sputtering condition and Mo content. Addition of Mo to CoCr thin film improved dramatically its surface degradation resistance in dilute sulfuric acid, as indicated by active-passive transition appeared in electrochemical polarization curve. Futhermore, the passive current density was decreased with increasing Mo content. The reduction in a number density of corrosion sites by Mo addition vms observed, after accelerated corrosion test. AES survey indicated that corrosion occured on the site with Cr depletion and highly concentrated chloride ions.

  • Cross-geometrical Cr/Co/Al-Ox/Co/Ni-Fe tunnel junctions were fabricated by magnetron sputtering. To form an insulating layer, The Al layer was oxidized in an atmosphere of oxygen-argon mixture at low power after deposition. To enhance the coercivity of the bottom Co layer, The Cr seed layer was deposited on the glass and it led to increase in coercivity. The coercivity increase is due to the increase of roughness through the Cr thickness. In over oxidation time, the oxidation of Co bottom layer and flat interface of insulator can increase the bottom Co coercivity. But TMR ratio gradually decrease. TMR ratio is relevant with Cr thickness, insulator thickness, and oxidation time. The maximum TMR ratio was 14% at room temperature and the TMR ratio was decreased to half at 0.51 V.

  • The mechanical properties of Cr-Ni alloy of austenitic stainless steel and Co-Cr alloy orthodontic wires were studied in tension. The wires (0.018 inch) were tested in the as-manufactured and heat-treated conditions. Instron type tension testing machine was used for this study. Mean values and standard deviations were computed. The results were as follows; 1. The Cr-Ni orthodontic wires of austenitic stainless steel are generally superior than the Co-Cr orthodontic wires in ultimate tensile strength, In the elongation, however, Co-Cr orthodontic wire are superior than Cr-Ni orthodontic wires. 2. Increase in the degree of strength by heat treatment are more clearly shown in Co-Cr orthodontic wires than Cr-Ni orthodontic wires. And the elongation is decreased by heat treatment in both case. 3. The changes of the degree of strength by cooling method we not clearly shown, but in Cr-Ni orthodontic wires, air cooling are more effective, in Co-Cr orthodontic wires, cooling effect are scarcely shown.

  • Thin CoCrTa/Cr films were deposited on glass substrates at $280^{\circ}C$ with or without Al underlayer. The coercivity of CoCrTa increased considerably by introducing an Al underlayer. The grain size of Cr thin film deposited on Al underlayer became smaller than that of Cr thin film deposited on glass substrate. The grain size of CoCrTa thin film was determined by Cr grain size. The cause of the coercivity increase seems to be associated with the refinement and uniform distribution of CoCrTa grains.
