Effect of Dopamine on a Voltage-Gated Potassium Channel in a Jellyfish Motor Neuron

  • To swimming motor neurons (SMNs) of Polyorchis penicillatus, a hydrozoan medusae, dopamine (DA) acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter by hyperpolarizing its membrane potential and decreasing its firing rate as well. Such an inhibitory action of DA is caused by an increased permeability to potassium (K) ions. To investigate whether voltage-gated K channels are directly responsible for the membrane hyperpolarization induced by DA, we employed whole-cell voltage clamp configuration. One ${\mu}M$ DA applied to SMNs increased the peak and rear values of voltage-gated K currents by 37 and 54%, respectively, in a reversible manner. Combined with subtraction analysis, this result suggests that the outflux of K ions by DA in SMNs occurs mainly through rectifier-like K channels.

독도산 히드라충류(자포동물문, 히드라충강)의 분류 (Hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) of Dokdo Islands, Korea)

  • 독도 생태연구의 일환으로 1993년 3월 23일 1999년 5월 12-15일 두차례에 걸쳐 히드라충류 채집을 실시하였다. 채집한 히드라충류는 2목 11과 15종으로 동정 분류되었고 이들 중 2종, 말미잘후카무라히드라 (Fukaurahydra antho-formis)와 사가미포도뿌리히드라(Rhizorhagium sagamiense)가 한국미기록종으로 밝혀져 재기재하고 보고한다.

  • 우리나라의 서해와 남해연안에서 1995년 5월 10월 사이에 채집된 히드라해파리는 2 목 4과 4종으로 동정, 분류되어 재기재와 함께 보고한다. 3종: Cladonema radiatum Dujardin, 1843: Eirene menoni Kramp, 1953 및 Gonionemus vertens A. Agassia, 1862는 한국미기록종이고 Turritopsis nutricula(McCrady, 1856)의 폴립은 한국해역에서 이미 알려 졌으나 해파리는 처음 보고된다.

  • 거제도와 장호항(동해)에서 1997년 1월부터 1999년 3월까지 채집한 히드라해파리류 가운데 꽃해파리목(Anthomedusae)에 속하는 팔방라드케해파리 [Rathkea octopunctata (M. Sars, 1835)]와 무희나선꼬리해파리 [Spirocodon saltatrix(Tilesius, 1818)] 그리고 연해파리목 (Leptomedusae)의 양면체형 해파리(Dipleurosoma typicum Boeck, 1866)가 한국미기록종으로 밝혀져 재기재하고 보고한다. 따라서 지금까지 밝혀진 한국 해산 히드라해파리류는 3목 7과 7종이 된다.

  • 1989년 6월부터 1997년 7월까지 우리 나라의 동해에서 채집한 히드라충류 가운데 4종, 고리마디히드라 [Bimeria annulata(Nutting, 1901)], 분지보우갠빌히드라 [Bougainvilla ramosa(van Beneden, 1844)], 북방산꽃히드라 [Eudendrium boreale Yamada, 1954] 그리고 파도깃히드라 [Plumularia undulata Yamada, 1950]가 한국미기록종으로 판명되어 재기재하고 보도한다. 이로서 지금까지 밝혀진 한국 해산 히드라충류는 2목, 18과의 134종 및 7아종이 된다.

  • 1994년 7월 22일부터 26일까지 한국동물분류학회 창립 10주년 기념 햅동채집이 진도에서 실시되었다. 이 기간 중 채집된 히드라충류는 8과 31종으로 $동정\cdot분류$되었는데, 이 중 8종은 진도기록종이고 나머지는 진도미기록종으로 판명되었다. 진도 미기록종 중 Halecium magellanicum과 Obelia flexuosa는 한국미기록종으로 밝혀졌다. 본 연구에서 관찰되지 않은 3종의 진도기록종을 포함하여 현재까지 동정된 진도産 하드라충류는 8과 34종이 된다.

Reproductive Biology of the Temperate Soft Coral Dendronephthya suensoni (Alcyonacea: Nephtheidae)

  • The azooxanthellate soft coral Dendronephthya suensoni (Holem, 1895) is distributed mainly around Jejudo Island, Korea. This species was determined as gonochoric with a sex ratio of 2:1 (female:male). Both female and male colonies have one gametogenic cycle a year. The annual reproductive cycle of D. suensoni is dependent on the seawater temperature. In particular, reproduction of the male colony showed a higher positive correlation between seawater temperature and the mean diameter of the spermaries. Gametogenesis in females and males took 6 months and 12 months, respectively. The mean diameter of a mature oocyte was $249.29\;{\pm}\;36.24\;{\mu}m$, with a maximum size of $354.45\;{\mu}m$. Spawning could have occurred in the fall after the seawater temperature began to decrease.

Re-description of Chrysaora pacifica (Goette, 1886) (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) from Korean Coastal Waters: Morphology and Molecular Comparisons

  • The nomenclature of the sea nettle jellyfish from Korea was initially described as Dactylometra quinquecirrha Agassiz, 1862. However its identity has been questioned on the basis of its local distribution and molecular data. Here, we examined morphology and DNA sequences of nuclear rDNA using specimens collected from southern Korean waters in August 2014. Based on morphological characteristics (bell size, umbrella pattern, number of tentacles and lappets) and distribution locality, we reassign the Korean D. quinquecirrha to Chrysaora pacifica (Goette, 1886), and provide a re-description accordingly. The molecular identity of C. pacifica was further confirmed by comparison of nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences.

Five New Records of Hydromedusae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) in Korea

  • Some hydromedusae were collected from Gijang (Busan), Yeounggwang, Munseom (Jejudo Is.) and Shinhangman with Issacc-Kidd Midwater trawl net or by SCUBA diving from 2001 to 2003. They were identified into five species of five families in three orders and are new to the Korean fauna. Bougainvillia ramosa (van Benenden, 1844) of the family Bougainvilliidae in the order Anthomedusae, Phialidium hemishaericum (Linne, 1767) of the family Campanulariidae and Aeguorea macrodactyla of the family Aequoreidae in the order Leptomedusae, Diphyes dispar (Chamisso and Eysenhardt, 1821) of the family Diphydae and Abylopsis tetragona (Otto, 1823) of the family Abylidae in the order Siphonophora. With a result of this work, the Korean hydromedusa fauna consists of 31 species of 18 families in six orders.

18S rRNA 유전자의 염기서열에 근거한 산호충류 (자포동물 문)의 분자계통 (Molecular Phvogenv of Anthozoans (Phylum Cnidaria) Based on the Nucleotide Sequences of 18S rRNA Gene)

  • The partial nucleotide sequences of 185 ribosomal RNA gene were compared for six cnidarian species (one belongs to class Hvdrozoa: Coryne pusilla. Five belong to class Anthozoa: Beflonella rigida from Octocorallia; Anemonia sulcutu, Anthopfeura kurognne, An thopleura midori from Hexacorallia: Cerianthus filiformis from Ceriantipatharial. The aligned sequence data were used to test the hypothesis on the anthozoan phylosenv by using the distance matrix method and parsimony method. The phvlosenetic inferences resulting from these methods indicate that the anthozoan is a monophvletic group and support the three subclass scheme (Octocorallia, HexBcorallia, Ceriantipatharial within class Anthozoa. The result also indicates that ceriantipatharian is more primitive than the other groups and that family Actiniidae is a monophvletic group within the anthozoan. However, the present analysis does not clearly indicate the phvlogenetic relationships of species among genera.
