  • The Scandinavian cluster of welfare societies has for many years been considered a realisation of Richard Titmuss' institutional redistributive model of social policy. Recent reforms have, however challenged this assumption. The paper sets out to evaluate whether recent major changes in welfare provision are merely modifying the model or whether the Scandianian states are converging towards some kind of European social model. It is concluded that besides very many first order changes, such as reducing benefits, an number of second and third order changes have occurred; i.e. the institutional setting and the objective of the welfare states have changed during the 1990s. The Scandinavian welfare states are still distinct, but less so than a decade or two ago. The new elements are features usually associated with welfare models at play within the European Union. It is, hence, concluded that welfare in Scandinavia is undergoing a process of Europeanisation.

  • The origin of globular cluster (GC) color bimodality, which is one of the salient phenomena observed in most large galaxies, has not yet been fully resolved. The phenomenon has conventionally been interpreted as a bimodal metallicity distribution based on an assumption of linear GC color-metallicity relations (CMRs). Recent studies however suggest that nonlinear GC CMRs can cause a bimodal color distribution even from a single-peaked metallicity spread. Using photometric and spectroscopic data on GCs in NGC 5128 (Cen A) and NGC 4594 (Sombrero), we investigate the nonlinearity of GC CMRs and compare the observed GC CMRs with the predictions of stellar population simulation models. Our careful selection of old GCs effectively reduces the scatter and reveals the nonlinear nature of the GC CMRs for various colors. The overall shape of the observed CMRs agrees well with that of the modeled CMRs, while offsets are present for some colors. We discuss the implications of our results in terms of the GC color bimodality and GC formation in NGC 5128 and NGC 4594.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to determine the specific fracture mechanics response of cracks that initiate at the stem-cement interface and propagate into the cement mantle. Two-dimensional finite element models of idealized stem-cement-bone cross-sections from the proximal femur were developed for this study. Two general stem types were considered; Rectangular shape and Charnley type stem designs. The FE results showed that the highest principal stress in the cement mantle for each case occurred in the upper left and lower right regions adjacent to the stem-cement interface. There was also a general decrease in maximum tensile stress with increasing cement mantle thickness for both Rectangular and Charnley-type stem designs. The cement thickness is found to be one of the important fatigue failure parameters which affect the longevity of cemented femoral components, in which the thinner cement was significantly associated with early mechanical failure for shot-time period.

  • We develop a random partition procedure based on a Dirichlet process prior with Laplace distribution. Gibbs sampling of a Laplace mixture of linear mixed regressions with a Dirichlet process is implemented as a random partition model when the number of clusters is unknown. Our approach provides simultaneous partitioning and parameter estimation with the computation of classification probabilities, unlike its counterparts. A full Gibbs-sampling algorithm is developed for an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo posterior computation. The proposed method is illustrated with simulated data and one real data of the energy efficiency of Tsanas and Xifara (Energy and Buildings, 49, 560-567, 2012).

  • Density functional calculations have been performed for the reactions of perfluoroalkylsilane and alkylsilane with silica surfaces. The (100) and (111) surfaces of ${\beta}-cristobalite$ are used as two possible models of the hydroxylated amorphous silica surface. This is the crystalline phase of silica with density and refractive index closest to those of amorphous silica. Moreover, two ${\beta}-cristobalite$ surfaces have the two types of silanol groups, namely the single silanols and the geminal silanols. We investigate the possible adsorption structure and formation energy of perfluoroalkylsilane and alkylsilane molecules with two type of silanol groups. The results will be compared with cluster and slab model.

  • Ubiquitous interaction in a pervasive environment is the main attribute of smart spaces. Pervasive systems are weaving themselves in our daily life, making it possible to collect user information invisibly, in an unobtrusive manner by known and even unknown parties. Huge number of interactions between users and pervasive devices necessitate a comprehensive trust model which unifies different trust factors like context, recommendation, and history to calculate the trust level of each party precisely. Trusted computing enables effective solutions to verify the trustworthiness of computing platforms. In this paper, we elaborate Unified Trust Model (UTM) which calculates entity's trustworthiness based on history, recommendation, context and platform integrity measurement, and formally use these factors in trustworthiness calculation. We evaluate UTM behaviour by simulating in different scenario experiments using a Trust and Reputation Models Simulator for Wireless Sensor Networks. We show that UTM offers responsive behaviour and can be used effectively in the low interaction environments.

  • We have identified the iscR (PA3815) gene encoding an iron-sulfur cluster assembly regulator homolog as one of the genes required for peroxide resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14. Here, we present the phenotypic characterization of an iscR deletion mutant in terms of KatA expression, stress responses, and virulence. The iscR null mutant exhibited reduced KatA activity at the posttranslational level, hypersensitivity to hydrogen peroxide, and virulence-attenuation in Drosophila melanogaster and mouse peritonitis models. These phenotypes were fully restored by multicopy-based expression of katA. These results suggest that the requirement of IscR in P. aeruginosa is related to the proper activity of KatA, which is crucial for peroxide resistance and full virulence of this bacterium.

  • This study investigates the differences in the purchasing behavior of infant & children's wear with the features of children and consumers. This study conducted a survey on female buyers of infant & children's wear. 558 questionnaires were analyzed by using SPSS 18.0 statistic program with factor analysis, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, cluster analysis, ANOVA, and paired t-test. The results are as follows: 1. The buyer's value was identified with 3 factors: mental achievement value, social achievement value, and pleasure value. Three types of group by values were identified: group seeking mental social achievement, group seeking social achievement, and group seeking pleasure. 2. Fashion and conformity, pleasure pursuit, and reasonable price pursuit orientations showed significant differences among the value groups. 3. A significant difference was found in the imitation of wearing role models according to sibling relationships.

  • Assuming that particles can be accelerated to high energies via diffusive shock acceleration process at the accretion shocks formed by the infalling flow toward the clusters of galaxies, we have calculated the expected spectrum of high-energy protons from the cosmological ensemble of the cluster accretion shocks. The model with Jokipii diffusion limit could explain the observed cosmic ray spectrum near $10^{19}eV$ with reasonable parameters and models if about $10^{-4}$ of the infalling kinetic energy can be injected into the intergalactic space as the high energy particles.

  • We investigate star clusters in the Stephan's Quintet using Wide Field Camera 3 of the Hubble Space Telescope and three filters (F438W, F606W, F814W). Stephan's Quintet located at ~ 85 Mpc, so most star clusters are seen like point source even in HST image. We perform the Point Spread Funtion fitting photometry to find star clusters. Then we have selected 749 star cluster candidates by visual inspection. Usinng simple steallr population models (Bruzual & Charlot, 2003), we estimate ages of these star clusters. Many young star clusters found in tidal features of NGC 7318 and NGC 7319. Also star clusters in the shocked region of NGC7318 have younger age than those in NGC 7319 tidal tail. These result implies interaction which distrupt NGC 7319 first, and collision between NGC 7318 A/B occurred. In contrast, old star clusters are mainly located in NGC 7317 and in the center of other galaxies. Implications of these result will be discussed.
