Photometric Variability of Symbiotic Stars at All Time Scales - Magellanic Cloud Systems

  • Symbiotic stars are long-orbital-period interacting binaries characterized by extended emission over the whole electromagnetic range and by complex photometric and spectroscopic variability. In this contribution, I will present some high-cadence, long-term optical light curves of confirmed and candidate symbiotic stars in the Magellanic Clouds. By careful visual inspection and combined time series analysis techniques, we investigate for the first time in a systematic way the photometric properties of these astrophysical objects, trying in particular to distinguish the evolutionary status of the cool component, to provide its first-order pulsation ephemeris and to link all this information with the physical parameters of the binary system as a whole. Finally, I will discuss a new, promising photometric technique, potentially able to discover Symbiotic Stars in the Local Group of Galaxies without the recourse to costly spectroscopic follow-up.

  • Since the atmospheric clearness index is one of the main factors for evaluating atmospheric circumstances, it is necessary to estimate its characteristics all over the cities in Korea. This study was focused on the evaluation of atmospheric condition for each 15 cities in terms of respectively or mutually analyzed clearness factor that was predicted on the assumed clear day with the model using factors such as average global insolation, cloud amount, and duration of sunshine measured for two years between 1999 and 2000. The new clearness index data will be extensively used by atmospheric circumstances analysts as well as by solar application designers or users.

  • Recent extreme weather events and natural disasters are causing rapid aging of the ancient structures with cultural value. It has threatened the safety and management. The construction design documents are not kept for such long time. Even if they are, they seem to be mismatched with the design structures due to corrosive effects. For these reasons, Korea has been facing difficulties in maintenance, reengineering and safety evaluation. In this study, three dimensional point cloud surface of bobsleigh is obtained using 3D LiDAR scanner. The obtained structure is compared with the original design and found to be highly accurate. The study shows the application of reverse engineering technique and its potential use for other civil structures.

Prediction of SST for Operational Ocean Prediction System

  • A practical algorithm for prediction of the sea surface temperatures (SST)from the satellite remote sensing data is presented in this paper. The fluctuations of SST consist of deterministic normals and stochastic anomalies. Due to large thermal inertia of sea water, the SST anomalies can be modelled by autoregressive or Markov process, and its near future values can be predicted provided the recent values of SST are available. The actual SST is predicted by superposing the pre-known SST normals and the predicted SST anomalies. We applied this prediction algorithm to the NOAA AVHRR weekly SST data for 18 years (1981-1998) in the seas adjacent to Korea (115-$145^{\circ}E$, 20-$55^{\circ}N$). The algorithm is applicable not only for prediction of SST in near future but also for nowcast of SST in the cloud covered regions.

Introduction to the Validation Module Design for CMDPS Baseline Products

  • CMDPS (COMS Meteorological Data Processing System) is the operational meteorological products extraction system for data observed from COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) meteorological imager. CMDPS baseline products consist of 16 parameters including cloud information, water vapor products, surface information, environmental products and atmospheric motion vector. Additionally, CMDPS includes the function of calibration monitoring, and validation mechanism of the baseline products. The main objective of CMDPS validation module development is near-real time monitoring for the accuracy and reliability of the whole CMDPS products. Also, its long time validation statistics are used for upgrade of CMDPS such as algorithm parameter tuning and retrieval algorithm modification. This paper introduces the preliminary design on CMDPS validation module.

  • Genomics & Informatics (NLM title abbreviation: Genomics Inform) is the official journal of the Korea Genome Organization. Herein, we conduct a statistical analysis of the publications of Genomics & Informatics over the 16 years since its inception, with a particular focus on issues relating to article categories, word clouds, and the most-studied genes, drawing on recent reviews of the use of word frequencies in journal articles. Trends in the studies published in Genomics & Informatics are discussed both individually and collectively.

DEVELOPMENT OF WIDE-FIELD IMAGING CAMERA FOR ZODIACAL LIGHT OBSERVATION

  • We have developed a wide-field imaging camera system, called WICZO, to monitor light of the night sky over extended period. Such monitoring is necessary for studying the morphology of interplanetary dust cloud and also the time and spatial variations of airglow emission. The system consists of an electric cooler a CCD camera with $60\%$ quantum efficiency at 500nm, and a fish-eye lens with $180^{\circ}$ field of view. Wide field imaging is highly desired in light of the night sky observations in general, because the zodiacal light and the airglow emission extend over the entire sky. This paper illustrates the design of WICZO, reports the result of its laboratory performance test, and presents the first night sky image, which was taken, under collaboration with Byulmaro Observatory, on top of Mt. Bongrae at Yongweol in January, 2004.

  • Social manufacturing architecture is based on information delivery through social media and SNS, PLM and social platform, crowd source and knowledge base on whole phase of product life cycle. Although advanced social manufacturing issues are rising globally, its technology emerging into domestic industry is likely to be slow. We focused to review technological changes and R&D trend, patent issues, and then suggest assignments and advices to be practiced for social manufacturing modeling.

  • With the rapid growth of network traffic, a large number of connected devices, and higher application services, the traditional network is facing several challenges. In addition to improving the current network architecture and hardware specifications, effective resource management means the development trend of 5G. Although many existing potential technologies have been proposed to solve the some of 5G challenges, such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), edge computing, millimeter-wave, etc., research studies in 5G continue to enrich its function and move toward B5G mobile networks. In this paper, focusing on the resource allocation issues of 5G core networks and radio access networks, we address the latest technological developments and discuss the current challenges for resource management in 5G.

Effect of Urea Derivatives on the Critical Micelle Concentration of Polyoxyethylated Nonionic Surfactant

  • The critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of aqueous solutions of a nonionic surfactant, polyoxyl 23 lauryl ether in the presence of various concentration of urea and its derivatives were measured. The CMC of the surfactant increase in proportion to the concentration of the additives, and the CMC-raising activities increased with more and longer alkyl grups substituted in urea. The CMC shift values were successfully correlated with the cloud point shift values and the protein-denaturing activities of the additives, respectively. These results suggest that the micelle formation, clouding of the surfactant and the protein denaturation are a closely related phenomenon, and a common mechanism is operating which might be the hydrophobic interaction.
