This study analyzes the current educational curricula in the field of clothing construction to provide some fundamental information for developing more appropriate educational courses and to activate the fashion business. A total of 82 different departments related to fashion and apparel were selected from four-year domestic universities and the curricula recently posted on their internet websites were analyzed by descriptive statistics. More than half (53.7%) of the 82 departments were offering classes in the clothing construction field for 3 credits and 4 class hours. College affiliation of the departments that offered curricula in the clothing construction field was classified into 5 categories: the arts (34), human ecology (22), natural sciences (14), humanities/culture (9), and others (3). Human ecology category showed the highest results in the average class hours (3.9), the number of classes in the clothing construction field (7.6), and the percentage of the classes in the clothing construction field out of all major classes offered by the clothing department (19.9%). All 82 departments were classified into 3 categories of: fashion design (32), clothing (28), and fashion business (22). The clothing category showed the highest results in the average credits (2.8), class hours (3.8), the number of classes offered by the clothing construction field (7.6), and the percentage of the classes that offer clothing construction education out of all major classes offered by the clothing department (19.9%). The educational contents of clothing construction area were classified into 8 different categories of: basic theory and sewing, clothing construction, flat pattern, draping, tailoring and advanced clothing construction, pattern CAD, sewing science and apparel manufacturing process, and clothing construction for special needs. Among these categories, the draping category constituted 21.7% as the largest part. In addition, the distribution of classes offered by 4 academic years were analyzed into 8 different categories.
This study develops tight-fitting upper clothing to measure electrocardiography (ECG) data. Taking into consideration the elasticity of the clothing, we made 4 experimental clothes by applying to each a weft reduction rate of 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70%. The 4 experimental clothes were used to measure resting ECG, exercise ECG, and post-exercise ECG for 4 men in their 20s. We compared clothing pressures using sensors on the human body and on a dressform. Subjective wear sensations of the 4 experimental clothes were evaluated using a subjective 7-point scale (with 7 being most excellent). We measured clothing pressures by using the air type pressure (AMI 3037-2) for upper and lower chest sensors in the developed tight-fitting upper clothing. The lower chest sensor showed that the clothing pressure on a human body and dressform changed consistently as the weft reduction rate decreased. The upper chest sensor showed inconsistent changes in clothing pressure as the weft reduction rate decreased. The wearing-test result for preliminary subjects showed that the lower chest sensor was more stable than the upper chest sensor; therefore, we inserted the sensor at the lower chest position before performing ECG. Except for Subject 4, the resting ECGs were stably measured for 3 subjects (Subject 1, Subject 2, and Subject 3) in all the developed clothes (A clothing, B clothing, C clothing, and D clothing). However, D clothing showed stable ECG values after exercise. The results of the experiment showed that we could measure ECG without difficulty using clothes with a weft reduction rate of 40% when the movement was not intense; however, tight-fitting upper clothing with a weft reduction rate of 70% was necessary to measure exercise ECG and post-exercise ECG values.
The study investigates the clothes-wearing behaviors of female college students based on differences in indoor heating systems and cold sensitivity. The respondents included a total of 281 female college students living in South Korea and China. Data were analyzed through an ANOVA and, a paired t-test based on SPSS 21.0. Korean students were less dependent on winter clothing than Chinese students for the whole body parts except for the trunk. Korean students were more likely to feel coldness more but wore less clothing. Korean students' clothes-wearing behaviors with respect to coldness depended on the indoor heating system. Korean students tended to buy warmer clothing, although they preferred not to wear undergarments and tended to wear and to wear less winter clothing. Chinese students showed more active clothes-wearing behaviors to keep their feet warm. Finally, groups divided by indoor heating systems and cold sensitivity showed different clothes-wearing behaviors in comparison to those groups based only on indoor heating systems. Even in similar weather conditions, clothes-wearing behaviors for cold adaptation depended on the indoor heating systems and cold sensitivity. The results suggest that this perspective should be taken into consideration when evaluating clothes-wearing behaviors of certain groups or individuals.
Recently, the population of Asian people has increased constantly in the United States., but appearances, culture and thoughts of Asian people are different with Americans in various ways, especially body shapes. Despite the recent developments in apparel size ranges in U. S. A., few changes have been made in sizing for Asian Women. Size ranges designed for Asian Women are not available on the mass market in U. S. A. They have many difficulties in finding clothing that fits well. Especially they do experience such as clothing problems in varying degrees. Therefore this research was designed to investigate the specific clothing problems of Asian Women in relation with size and fit, Asian Women's present means of resolving their clothing problems in U. S. A. 60 Asian Women in Twin cities, Minnesota were interviewed during the period of October, 1991. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics for demographic information on the selected sample and the chi-square test for relationships between the independent variables and clothing problems. The results indicated that most respondents had shopped in a department store and 38.3% of the respondents answered rarely-fit of suit. Also 40% of the respondents answered that pants length was too long. There were significant relationships between the demographic variables i.e. age, marital status, occupation, height and clothing problems of Asian women.
As the culture develops, the body of children nowadays improves, but their physical fitness is weaker than that of children in the past. If physical fitness strengthens through clothing, this must be the easiest and the most efficient long-range training method. To find out the solutions on the above mentioned problems through clothing, this study was made for the analysis of the correlations of clothing weight and physical fitness. The children's endurance upon cold can be explained by the physical fitness, and has relation with the clothing insulation. Therefore, motor ability was measured as an index of physical fitness and clothing weight was measured as an index of insulation. This observation was made in Spring and Fall, 1985, in which 339 kindergartners and their mothers were the subject. The results of the study were as follows: Physical fitness of children decreased in proportion to the clothing weight, and especially this can be seen in boys rather than in girls, and in Fall rather than in Spring. In case of the children who spent more time outdoors rather than indoors, who played in larger space, and who didn't have meat frequently, it turned out that their clothing weight was surprisingly lessened and their physical fitness was highly food.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between family values and selected clothing behavior variables for a group of college women in Seoul, Korea. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. A significant positive relationship was found between family values and selected clothing behaviors. There were significant relationship between the materialistic family and one clothing behavior variable: Interest. There were significant relationship between the social climber family and six clothing behavior variables: Aesthetic, Modesty, Interest, Comfort, Attention and Dependence. There were significant relationship between the conventional family and seven clothing behavior variables: Aesthetic, Modesty, Interest, Comfort, Management, Social approval and Dependence. 2. There were differences in four clothing behavior variables according to their grades: The seniors placed significantly more importance on Aesthetic, Interest, Management, Dependence than freshmen. 3. There were differences in five clothing behavior variables a?cording to their major fields. Human social course placed significantly most important on Management. Natural science course placed significantly most important on Modesty. Art course placed significantly most important on three clothing behavior variables: Interest, Attention and Dependence.
In this study, the notion of payment intention price was introduced and examined in relation with self-image congruence, clothing preference and two types of reference price: expected price and fair price. One hundred samples of female collegiate students participated in the group survey and responded to the instrument including variables of clothing image evaluation, clothing preference, reference price, payment intention price toward a one-piece dress as the stimulus, and ideal self-image perception. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and regressions were applied on data analysis. The results were as follow. Payment intention price was determined by clothing preference and fair price, and the explaining power of fair price was greater than clothing preference. One confirmatory path was observed that self-image congruence effects clothing preference, and then clothing preference effects payment intention price. The other confirmatory path was from expected price to fair price and fair price to payment intention price.
