  • Recently, ground source heat pump systems are being used in buildings for cooling and heating to reduce greenhouse gas and save energy. However, ground source heat pump systems mainly use the vertical closed-loop geothermal system design rather than the open-loop geothermal system design. This is due to a lack of knowledge and few research feasibility studies. In this research, a dynamic thermal analysis numerical simulation based on a standard house model was conducted for an open-loop geothermal system. Based on heating load analysis results, the life cycle costs of a standard house using an open two-well geothermal system were analyzed and compared with a vertical closed-loop geothermal system, and a diesel boiler. As a result, it was found that using an open two-well geothermal system shows economic return on investment after three years.

  • The Firebrick Resistance-Heated Energy Storage (FIRES) concept developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology aims to enhance profitability of the nuclear power industry in the next decades. Studies carried out at Massachusetts Institute of Technology already provide estimates of the potential revenue from FIRES system when it is applied to industrial heat supply, the likely first application. Here, we investigate the possibility of operating a power plant (PP) with a fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactor and a closed Brayton cycle. This variant offers features such as enhanced nuclear safety as well as flexibility in design of the PP but also radically changes the way of operating the PP. This exploratory study provides estimates of the revenue generated by FIRES in addition to the nominal revenue of the stand-alone fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactor, which are useful for defining an initial design. The electricity price data is based on the day-ahead markets of Germany/Austria and the United States (Iowa). The proposed method derives from the equation of revenue introduced in this study and involves simple computations using MatLab to compute the estimates. Results show variable economic potential depending on the host grid but stress a high profitability in both regions.

  • In this study, an edge device that monitors the injection molding process by measuring the mold vibration(acceleration) signal and the mold surface temperature was developed and evaluated its performance. During injection molding, signals of the injection start, V/P switchover, and packing end sections were obtained through the measurement of the mold vibration and the injection time and packing time were calculated by using the difference between the times of the sections. Then, the mold closed and mold open signals were obtained using a magnetic hall sensor, and cycle time was calculated by using the time difference between the mold closed time each process. As a result of evaluating the performance by comparing the process data monitored by the edge device with the shot data recorded on the injection molding machine, the cycle time, injection time, and packing time showed very small error of 0.70±0.38%, 1.40±1.17%, and 0.69±0.82%, respectively, and the values close to the actual were monitored and the accuracy and reliability of the edge device were confirmed. In addition, it was confirmed that the mold surface temperature measured by the edge device was similar to the actual mold surface temperature.

  • The present paper aims to give basic information to establish zero emission material cycle including the minimization of emissions from industrial production processes and the area in regional scale. Strategies and methodologies to analyze emissions from the production processes and our human activities and to reduce those emissions by refining and/or replacing the unit process with the alternatives are introduced as well. Quantitative evaluation and management systems of any raw materials and the production process are from vie points of treatment are essential. Estabiishment of a process networking for the recycle of discharged non-products materials by the intra-process, trans-process and the trans-industries are proposed. Procedures and priorities to formulate industrial and regional zero emission system are proposed as well.

  • Currently the problem of air pollution caused by the motor vehicle emission is of the most serious problems to be solved. Life Cycle Assessment is a process to evaluate the environmental burdens associated with a product or process by identifying and quantifying energy and materials used and wasters to the environment. This paper establishes a Life Cycle Assessment Systems which satisfies the criteria motor vehicle emission for the automobile producers who are currently producing the automobiles with catalytic convert. This plan also considered the constraint of the effective motor vehicle emission by way of the exhaust gas recirculation, electronic fuel injection, closed loop carburetor. In order to develope the performance of the LCA systems, the recent emissions test data have also been applied. The result of the development LCA systems has proved that the LCA plans presented in this paper satisfies the criteria motor vehicle emission and will be contributed to constrain the motor vehicle emission most effectively.

  • Current high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) are based on a closed Brayton cycle with helium gas as the working fluid. Thermodynamic performance of the axial-flow helium gas turbines is of critical concern as it considerably affects the overall cycle efficiency. Helium gas turbines pose some design challenges compared to steam or air turbomachinery because of the physical properties of helium and the uniqueness of the operating conditions at high pressure with low pressure ratio. This report present a review of the helium Brayton cycle experiences in Germany and in Japan. The design and availability of helium gas turbines for HTGR are also presented in this study. We have developed a new throughflow calculation code to calculate the design-point performance of helium gas turbines. Use of the method has been illustrated by applying it to the GTHTR300 reference.

  • This paper deals with an optimal output tracking control for open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine. For this purpose, we modeled simplified mathematical model of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine and designed optimal output feedback control system using combustion chamber pressure. For design the closed-loop system of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine, we designed optimal output feedback linear quadratic tracking control system using the linearized model and demonstrated the performance of the controller through numerical simulation.

  • In this paper, a closed-loop system constructed with a linear plant and nonlinearity in the feedback connection is considered to argue against its planar orbital stability. Through a state space approach, a main result that presents a sufficient stability criterion of the limit cycle predicted by solving the harmonic balance equation is given. Preliminarily, the harmonic balance of the nonlinear feedback loop is assumed to have a solution that determines the characteristics of the limit cycle. Using a state-space approach, the nonlinear loop equation is reformulated into a linear perturbed model through the introduction of a residual operator. By considering a series of transformations, such as a modified eigenstructure decomposition, periodic averaging, change of variables, and coordinate transformation, the stability of the limit cycle can be simply tested via a scalar function and matrix. Finally, the stability criterion is addressed by constructing a composite Lyapunov function of the transformed system.

  • We studied on some techniques which are able to discriminate the difference between normal and infarcted myocardium by consecutive image analysis in B-mode echocardiogram. In order to analyze two-dimensional echocardiogram, we presented inter-frame and intra-frame analysis method throughout the complete heart cycle in closed-chest human and proposed new analysis parameters which are named HGE and LT. The analysis technique using the proposed parameters revealed quantitatively dominant features between normal and infarcted regions. The infarcted areas yield regions of higher intensity throughout the entire cardiac cycle, but normal tissue demonstrates greater variability throughout the entire cardiac cycle. Hence, we could verify that these parameters varying over the entire cardiac cycle are good indicators for the state of myocardium.

  • Thermochemical cycles have been predominantly used for energy transformation from heat to stored chemical free energy in the form of hydrogen. The thermochemical cycle based on uranium (UTC), proposed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been considered as a better alternative compared to other thermochemical cycles mainly due to its safety and high efficiency. UTC process includes three steps, in which only the first step is unique. Hydrogen production apparatus with hectogram reactants was designed in this study. The results showed that high yield hydrogen was obtained, which was determined by drainage method. The results also indicated that the chemical conversion rate of hydrogen production was in direct proportion to the mass of $Na_2CO_3$, while the solid product was $Na_2UO_4$, instead of $Na_2U_2O_7$. Nevertheless the thermochemical cycle used for hydrogen generation can be closed, and chemical compounds used in these processes can also be recycled. So the cycle with $Na_2UO_4$ as its first reaction product has an advantage over the proposed UTC process, attributed to the fast reaction rate and high hydrogen yield in the first reaction step.
