Purposes: The purpose of this study is to analyze nurses' perception on the clinical career ladder system which was introduced to enhance the nursing capabilities in general hospital. Methods: Research data has been collected for approximately 30 days since March 28, 2017 from 171 nurses who had been involved in the clinical career ladder system, 177 nurses who had not participated, and a total of 348. Finding: The study results showed that nurses' perception on the cost effectiveness of clinical career ladder system is significantly different depending on the sex, age, program experience, personal stage in the clinical career ladder system and the individual's health condition. In addition, the nurses' willingness to pay for the clinical career ladder system was significantly associated with their department and the needs for the system. With adjusted age, gender, position, education and marital status, nursing competency was 8.71(95% Confidence Interval; 4.79 to 12.63) in the presence of system experience, but the perception on clinical career ladder system was 4.34(95% Confidence Interval; -6.84 to -1.84). Practical Implications: Based on the study results, we expect that more hospitals introduce the clinical career ladder system and also use these study results as basic data for securing excellent nurses.
Objectives : Introduction to Medicine(醫學入門, Yixuerumen) is one of the basic clinical texts in Korean medical history. This study is designed to prove clinical value of Introduction to Medicine for practitioners in their early stage of clinical practice. Methods : Introduction to Medicine is closely reviewed in various aspects in order to examine broad outlines of specificity as well as its distinctive constructional feature. Results : Since Introduction to Medicine showed peculiar intention of developing practitioner's clinical ability, it has been a preferential choice for Korean medicine practitioners to enhance their qualification at the early stage of one's career in Korean history. It is still valid for modern practitioners because composite medical texts are needed in order to systematize one's fragmental knowledge acquired from institutional education. Conclusions : Introduction to Medicine shows a large potential as a clinical textbook in the course of maximizing one's clinical ability with its aid. Through understanding multilateral aspects of clinical guidelines and directions engraved in Introduction to Medicine, learners will be able to derive full capacity from the text.

Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate the nature of tacit nursing knowledge practiced in the clinical field in Korea using hybrid models, and to clarify the definitions and attributes of the concept. Methods: The definition and nature of tacit nursing knowledge, obtained through a review of the extensive literature at the theoretical stage of the research, and the analysis of the in-depth interview data conducted by the career nurses in the fieldwork stage, are compared and analyzed. Results: The tacit nursing knowledge was found in three dimensions as knowledge related to the person, the clinical situation work context, the self, the others, and the task. The tacit nursing knowledge was defined as personal nursing knowledge and artistic skills that show up as unconscious behavior patterns, learned informally, and internalizedthrough repeated clinical practice experience based on professional nursing knowledge. Conclusion: Tacit nursing knowledge has been widely used in clinical practice and has been shown to have a great impact, directly or indirectly, on clinical nursing. Therefore, individual and organizational efforts are needed for validation and clarification using the generation, sharing, collection, and peer review of sound implicit nursing knowledge to ensure that it is properly applied.

The purpose of this study is to identify the difference in learning styles, learning stages, and preferred nursing specialties between two groups of nursing programs, regular BSN and RN-BSN. The survey instrument was a simplified version of the Kolb's Learning-Style Instrument which was developed by the researcher, a self- reported learning style questionnaire with twelve questions related to the four learning stages. The sample of the study was the 218 nursing students in a university in Korea which consisted of 58 junior and 67 senior students in the regular BSN program, and 58 junior and 35 senior students in the RN-BSN program. Main findings of the study were as the following. 1) Over all, the major learning style was either the diverger or the accomodator; the most preferred learning stage was the concrete experience and the leastly preferred learning stage was the abstractive conceptualization learning stage; and the most preferred nursing specialty in the future was the clinical nursing. 2) Students in the BSN program preferred four learning stages with rather equal proportion, whereas the students in the RN-BSN program preferred the concrete experience learning stage as high as 60.3% and the abstractive conceptualization learning stage as low as 9.5%. 3)For the future career, the junior students of both programs preferred clinical and educational nursing areas, and the senior students of both programs preferred clinical and research areas. The main reason of the difference seemed to result from the different courses such as Health Education or Teaching Method for the juniors and the Nursing Research for the seniors of both groups. Because the sample of the study was limited to a university, it is difficult to generalize the study results for the entire nursing students in Korea. Continuous studies with larger numbers of nursing students and nurse educators, and experimental studies measuring the effects of new curricula are needed for the future.

Purpose: This descriptive research study is intended to develop practical strategies for enhancing the quality of elderly care by evaluating the levels of ageism and compassion competence among clinical nurses and their impact on geriatric nursing performance. Methods: This study involved 162 nurses who provided direct care to elderly patients in a department with many such patients. Of the 161 returned questionnaires, 150 were analyzed, excluding 11 that had insincere or missing responses. To analyze the data, a comprehensive approach was employed using the IBM SPSS 27.0 program that included calculations of frequency and percentage, mean, and standard deviation, as well as more complex statistical tests such as the independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical linear regression analysis. Results: Compassion competence was significantly positively correlated with elderly care and negatively correlated with ageism. This study conclusively demonstrates that compassion competence among nurses in geriatric nursing situations plays a crucial role in provision of quality nursing grounded in understanding and respect for the elderly. Consequently, it is imperative to develop educational strategies tailored to each career stage of nursing practice to further enhance effective elderly care. Conclusion: This study conclusively demonstrates that compassion competence in geriatric nursing situations plays a crucial role in provision of quality nursing grounded in understanding and respect for the elderly. Purpose: This study was designed to examine effects of sense of calling, job satisfaction and organizational commitment on retention intention in nurses who are at the advanced beginner-stage. Methods: Participants were 199 nurses with 13 to 36 months' clinical career at hospital located in Busan, Korea. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation, and Multiple regression. Results: Retention intention correlated positively with sense of calling (r=.43, p<.001), job satisfaction (r=.31, p<.001) and organizational commitment (r=.31, p<.001). Factors affecting the participants' retention intention were found to be statistically significant (F=21.96, p<.001). Total factor score accounted for 24.1% of retention intention. Out of the related factors, the most influential factor was 'goals/meaning', belonging to the sub-areas of the sense of calling and explaining 18.2% of retention intention, followed by organizational commitment and average monthly income in that order. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest a need to develop a management program that helps promote retention intention for nurses at the advanced beginner-stage by both improving their monthly income and outside conditions and, more importantly, raising their sense of calling, especially in association with the goals/meaning of their life.
Purpose: To find the factors of subjective musculoskeletal symptoms associated with the general characteristics and tasks of operating room nurses (OR nurses) and then to use the factors as basic information for preventing and managing musculoskeletal symptoms in OR nurses. Method: This study was an exploratory research. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire from OR nurses working at 8 polyclinics in Korea during the period from July 26 2004 to August 19 2004. The questionnaire contains 7 questions on general characteristics and 18 questions on tasks in the operating room. Result: 187 (75.1%) nurses said they 'had' subjective musculoskeletal symptoms. Statistically significant differences were observed according to clinical career, career as an OR nurse, skillfulness, satisfaction with tasks in the operating room, perception on suitable treatment, care of symptoms by the hospital. weight of hospital linen and weight of a basic operation set (p<.05). Conclusion: Musculoskeletal symptoms complained of by OR nurses were significant. This may cause difficulties in nursing tasks in the operating room. Thus, various arrangements should be made for OR nurse with subjective musculoskeletal symptoms at the early stage.
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of interpersonal relationship ability, job stress, and stress coping type on the turnover intention of nurses in the early stage of their careers. Methods: Data were collected from 136 early stage nurses from two general hospitals and one tertiary hospital in Chungbuk province. An early stage nurse was defined as the nurse with a work experience of 3 to 36 months. The collected data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test, Person's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: It was seen that turnover intention had a negative correlation with interpersonal competency (r=-.20, p=.020) and a positive correlation with job stress (r=.56, p<.001). Job stress due to work over load, inadequate compensation and working environment, interpersonal relationship ability, and length of clinical career were significant factors influencing turnover intention (p<.05). These variables explained for 50.4% of the variance in turnover intention. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop an interpersonal relationship ability improvement program to decrease turnover intention among early stage nurses by helping them to successfully adapt to their job. Moreover, it is important to bring about continuous improvements in terms of provision of adequate workload and appropriate rewards, and creation of a suitable work environment to reduce the job stress of early stage nurses.
Pharmacists should maintain professional competencies to provide optimal pharmaceutical care services to patients, which can be achieved through continued commitment to lifelong learning. Traditionally continuing education (CE) has been widely used as a way of lifelong learning for many healthcare professionals. It, however, has several limitations. CE is delivered in the form of instructor-led education focused on multiple learners. Learning is passive and reactive for participants, so it sometimes does not lead to bringing behavioral changes in workplace performance. Therefore, recently the concept of lifelong learning tends to move from CE toward continuing professional development (CPD). CPD is an ongoing process that improves knowledge, skills, and competencies throughout a professional's career. It is a more comprehensive structured approach toward the enhancement of personal competencies. It emphasizes an individual's learning needs and goals and enables learning to become proactive, conscious, and self-directed. CPD consists of four stages: reflect, plan, learn, and evaluate. CE is one component of CPD. Each stage is recorded in a CPD portfolio. There are many practical difficulties in implementing the complete CPD system for lifelong learning of pharmacists in many countries including Korea. Applying a hybrid form that utilizes CPD and CE together, as in the case of some countries, could be an alternative. Furthermore, in undergraduate pharmacy education, it is necessary to teach students about CPD and train them on how to perform CPD as a pharmacist.
