  • Objectives: Shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal complaint that necessitates physician consultation and significantly diminishes patients' quality of life. In this review, we analyzed clinical studies that investigated the use of Korean Medicine for the treatment of shoulder pain. Methods: We searched the online Korean databases, such as KMBase, DBpia, NDSL, RISS, KISS, and OASIS for clinical studies that report the use of Korean Medicine for shoulder pain. We analyzed the included studies with regard to study design, interventions, evaluations, and results. Results: We analyzed data from the following 29 studies: 14 clinical trials (which included 9 randomized controlled trials) and 15 observational studies (which included 11 case reports). In this review, we observed that post-stroke shoulder pain was the most common cause of shoulder pain, which was reported in 13 out of 29 studies (44.8%), although in actual clinical practice, patients are more likely to present with primary shoulder pain. Most included studies (72.4%) reported manual acupuncture as the most common intervention for shoulder pain. More than 50% of the studies used range of motion (58.6%) and the numeric rating scale (51.7%) to evaluate shoulder function and pain, respectively. Although the result was not statistically significant in all included studies, most studies concluded that Korean Medicine could be considered an effective treatment option in patients with shoulder pain. Conclusions: Based on analysis of studies included in this review, Korean Medicine can be considered useful clinical treatment for shoulder pain.

  • Background: In recent years, numerous studies have been performed to investigate the CCND1 G870A gene polymorphism impact on brain tumors susceptibility. Unfortunately, the results of previous studies were inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to derive a more precise estimation of any association. Materials and Methods: We conducted a search in PubMed, Embase and CNKI covering all published papers up to November, 2013. Odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were applied to assess associations. Results: A total of 6 publications including 9 case-control studies met the inclusion criteria. The pooled ORs for the total included studies showed significant association among comparison A vs G (OR= 1.246, 95%CI= 1.092-1.423, p= 0.001), homozygote comparison AA vs GG (OR= 1.566, 95%CI= 1.194-2.054, p= 0.001), heterozygote comparison AG vs GG (OR= 1.290, 95%CI= 0.934-1.782, p= 0.122), dominant model AA/GA vs GG (OR= 1.381, 95%CI= 1.048-1.821, p= 0.022) and recessive model AA vs GA/GG (OR= 1.323, 95%CI= 1.057-1.657, p= 0.015) especially in glioma. Conclusions: CCND1 G870A polymorphism may increase brain tumor risk, especially for gliomas. However, more primary large scale and well-designed studies are still required to evaluate the interaction of CCND1 G870A polymorphism with brain tumor risk.

  • Objectives : Since The Journal of Korean Acupuncture and Moxibustion Society(JKAMS) started publishing in 1984, randomised controlled trials(RCTs) and non-randomised clinical studies(NRSs) consistently have increased in quality and quantity. There has been no study on quality assessment of NRSs. Thus, this study evaluted non-randomised comparative clinical trials in the JKAMS to assess the quantity and quality. Methods : Upon extracting NRSs for assessing the intervention effects from all the articles published in the JKAMS from 1984 to 2009, assessments were made on methodological index for non-randomised studies(MINORS). Also, the analysis were made upon the proportion of non-randomised comparative clinical trials within original articles. The mean scores by research methods and years, and total scores and mean scores of yearly research methods were analyzed. Results : A total of 44 trials on non-randomised comparative clinical trials were selected. In 1980s, 4.3% of the total selected original articles, in 1990s, 4.1%, and in 2000s 14.2% were NRSs. According to the research designs, the mean scores of MINORS were Case-control study 18.3, Controlled before and after 18.5, Quasi randomised trial 18.5, and non randomised trial 17.9(out of 24), respectively. Cross-sectional study was the most frequently used(41.9%). Conclusion : Although NRSs consistently increased in quantity, the assessed mean scores were low and most articles used Cross-sectional study. Thus, there should be studied using appropriate research methods in the future.

  • Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasitic organism affecting all warm-blooded vertebrates. Due to the unavailability of commercialized human T. gondii vaccine, many studies have been reported investigating the protective efficacy of pre-clinical T. gondii vaccines expressing diverse antigens. Careful antigen selection and implementing multifarious immunization strategies could enhance protection against toxoplasmosis in animal models. Although none of the available vaccines could remove the tissue-dwelling parasites from the host organism, findings from these pre-clinical toxoplasmosis vaccine studies highlighted their developmental potential and provided insights into rational vaccine design. We herein explored the progress of T. gondii vaccine development using DNA, protein subunit, and virus-like particle vaccine platforms. Specifically, we summarized the findings from the pre-clinical toxoplasmosis vaccine studies involving T. gondii challenge infection in mice published in the past 5 years.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the trends in acupuncture research on Internet addiction disorder. Methods: Clinical research papers on acupuncture treatment were searched and selected. Seven databases, including English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean databases, were searched systematically. Non-clinical, non-acupuncture, and unpublished studies were excluded. The characteristics of the included articles were described, and these articles were assessed by the Risk of Bias (RoB) tool or the Risk of Bias Assessment for Non-randomized Studies (RoBANS) tool. Results: Ten clinical studies on Internet addiction disorder were finally selected, and all of these studies were published in China. The electroacupuncture (EA) method was used in most of the acupuncture treatment studies. Most of the psychotherapy studies used cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in the control group. Most of the studies showed effective results. The results of this study suggest that the combination of acupuncture and psychotherapy is more effective than either treatment modality alone. However, the quality of these clinical studies was low. Conclusions: According to this study, acupuncture treatment seems to have excellent effects in Internet addiction disorder. However, the quality of most studies was low. Therefore, higher quality research on Internet addiction disorder is required.
