Purpose: This study examined the mediating effects of nursing professionalism on the relationship between the stress of clinical practice and compassion competence in nursing students. Methods: A correlational research design was used in this study. The participants were 120 nursing students recruited from three universities in South Korea. Data were collected using the self-reporting scales of stress of clinical practice, nursing professionalism, and compassion competence. Baron and Kenny's regression method and the Sobel test were used to analyze the mediating effects of nursing professionalism on the association between the stress of clinical practice and compassion competence. Results: The mean score for compassion competence was above average. Of the compassion competence domains, sensitivity and insights had the highest and lowest scores, respectively; there were significant mean differences in compassion competence scores according to their grade and level of satisfaction with nursing major. Compassion competence correlated negatively with the stress of clinical practice, whereas it correlated positively with nursing professionalism. In addition, nursing professionalism exerted full mediating effects on the relationship between the stress of clinical practice and compassion competence. Conclusion: The results suggested that enhancing nursing professionalism could help promote compassion competence among nursing students who experience stress in clinical practice.
Purpose: This study involeved a descriptive survey to identify clinical practice satisfaction, self-esteem, and nursing professionalism of nursing college students and determined the factors that affected their nursing professionalism. Methods: Data were collected through a survey of conducted from December 4 to December 20, 2019 (N=186). The relationship among variables was analyzed using Pearson's coefficient correlation and affecting factors for turnover intention were identified by using multiple linear regression. Results: The research results demonstrate that the mean of nursing students' clinical practice satisfaction mean was 3.64 (5 total), the mean of self-esteem was 3.84 (4 total), and the mean of nursing professionalism mean was 3.89 (5 total). Nursing professionalism was significantly different by age and satisfaction with major. Nursing professionalism had positive relationships with clinical practice satisfaction, self-esteem, and satisfaction with major, but had a negative relationships with age. Clinical practice satisfaction, self-esteem, satisfaction with major, and age were identified as influencing factors in turnover intention, and the explanatory power was 43.3%. Conclusion: A strategy to increase clinical practice satisfaction and to enhance self-esteem in nursing college students is necessary. Likewise, further analysis and programs to improve clinical practice environments and training systems should be implemeted.
Purpose: This study was to compare effects of preceptorship on nursing students' critical thinking propensity, clinical competency, and the satisfaction of clinical practice. Method: The subjects were 80 by preceptorship group and 51 by conventional method group. The data were analyzed by SPSS 12.0 program. Results: The subject's critical thinking propensity, clinical competency and satisfaction of clinical practices between the preceptorship group and the conventional method group revealed statistically significant difference. Subject's critical thinking propensity revealed significant correlations, along with the clinical competεncy and the satisfaction for clinical practice. And the clinical competency revealed statistically significant correlations with the satisfaction for clinical practice. Conclusion: Findings of this study reveals that the nursing students who had clinical practice by preceptorship showed higher scores in the critical thinking propensity, clinical competency, and the satisfaction for clinical practice than the conventional method group. Consequently, we are quite consciously encouraged to reinforce the preceptorship for realization of an effective clinical practice education for nursing students.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a neonatal nursing practice program for nursing students on students' stress, self-efficacy, and confidence. Methods: A 1-group pre- and post- study design was used. The participants consisted of 64 nursing students who were in a pediatric nursing clinical practicum at a nursing college in Seoul from September 2015 to May 2016. The program consisted of 3 stages-orientation, practice, and debriefing-and was conducted for 3 hours during a 2-week period of the pediatric nursing clinical practicum. The dependent variables were neonatal nursing practice stress, self-efficacy, and confidence. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test, the Pearson correlation coefficient, the $x^2$ test, and descriptive statistics with SPSS for Windows version 22.0. Results: The neonatal nursing practice program was effective at decreasing clinical practice-related stress and increasing confidence and self-efficacy regarding neonatal nursing practice. Conclusion: The neonatal nursing practice program may effectively promote the integration of theoretical knowledge and practice. In the future, we propose to develop various educational programs that reinforce basic nursing skills for neonates as part of an effective pediatric nursing clinical practicum.
Purpose: This study was done to examine the effect of direct practice of newborn health assessment on nursing student's clinical competence and self-efficacy and to propose effective strategies for clinical education on newborn care. Methods: Design was a nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental study. The direct practice program was composed of a lecture, demonstration, drill and feedback using a manikin, and repeated direct practice regarding newborn health assessment. Participants were 65 student nurses taking the pediatric nursing practicum in the nursery room at M hospital. The experimental group (n=33) participated in the direct practice program for newborn health assessment and the control group (n=32) received the traditional practice method. Nursing clinical competence was assessed by two nurse investigators and structured questionnaires were used to measure self-efficacy. Results: The experimental group's clinical competence was significantly higher than that of the control group (t=-4.82, p=.000). However no significant difference was found between the two groups for self-efficacy (t=1.264, p=.211). Conclusion: These findings indicate that the direct practice program is effective in improving nursing student's clinical competence, but it was not effective in increasing self-efficacy. Direct practice in various clinical education settings is recommended and longitudinal effects be evaluated.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore preceptees' experience among nursing students in the Clinical Nursing Practice program as integral practice. Specific aims were to identify problems students face as preceptees at a clinical practice and how they interact with preceptors and others. Methods: Grounded theory methodology was utilized. Data were collected from interactive field notes and transcribed notes with individual in-depth interview from 12 senior nursing students who had experiences as a preceptee in the Clinical Nursing Practice. Results: Through constant comparative analysis, a core category emerged as "Being refined while taking a firm stand with lack." The process of "Being refined while taking a firm stand with lack" consisted of four phases: sailing phase, adaptation phase, achievement phase and wistful returning phase. Conclusion: The findings of the study indicate that there is a need for nursing students to understand the limitations and strengths to learning experiences in preceptorship. In addition, the Clinical Nursing Practice as an integral practice program is needed to improve nursing capacity and for proper adaptation to real clinical environment among graduating students.
The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship between empowerment and satisfaction of clinical practice in nursing students. The instrument of this study was a structured questionnaire included empowerment and satisfaction of clinical practice. The data was collected from september 28, 1999 to March 31, 2000 and analyzed by Cronbach alpha, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and simple regression by using SPSS Win program. The result of research were as follows: 1. There was significant difference according to the general characteristic factor. The total empowerment was predicted by meaning of nursing, university and college, relationship of peer, clearance of study purpose. Satisfaction of clinical practice was predicted by university and college, clearance of study purpose. 2. There was a significant correlation between empowerment and satisfaction of clinical practice(r=0.442, p=0.000). 3. Empowerment was the highest factor predicting satisfaction of clinical practice. A total of 19.5% of the variance was explained in the total satisfaction of clinical practice. It was found that the higher the degree of perceived empowerment, the higher the degree of satisfaction of clinical practice. Therefore, nursing faculty should plan interventions to inspire satisfaction level of clinical practice by empowerment.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of student nurses during their clinical practice periods in an alcoholic ward. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological study design was employed. Individual interviews were conducted and audio-taped. Colaizzi's method of data analysis was applied to inductively determine themes and formulated meanings. Data saturation was achieved and methodological rigor was established. Results: Four themes were identified and these themes included anxiety of nursing practice in unfamiliar setting, sympathy with patients, learning about the inpatient alcoholics care, and self-reflection. Conclusion: Nursing students had positive and negative experiences in their clinical practice. The results of this study had important implications regarding clinical practice and research for nursing clinical education.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the clinical instructors' role experience in college of nursing. Method: Two focus group interviews were held with a total of 12 clinical instructors. All interviews were recorded and transcribed as they were spoken, and the collected data were analyzed using content analysis of Downe-Wamboldt(1992). Results: Three themes and six subthemes were extracted from the analysis: 1) Getting recognition of special roles as a clinical instructor: 'Recognizing the role of clinical instructor for guiding student's individual practice goals', 'Recognizing helping and supporting roles for student's successful clinical practice', 2) Having difficulty in performing the role of clinical practice instructor: 'Difficulty from the lack of knowledge and experience as a clinical practice instructor', 'Difficulty from the gap between current clinical practice and purpose of clinical nursing practice', 3) Making efforts to overcome the difficulties as a clinical instructor and accomplishing personal development: 'Making efforts to acquire personal knowledge and experience', 'Making a chance to reflect on and grow up oneself'. Conclusion: Clinical instructors take an important part of clinical nursing education. To improve the quality of clinical nursing education, it is needed role reestablishment and institutional support for clinical instructors on the basis of the understanding of instructors' experience.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore perception of clinical experience between the initial and final practice and to explore changes in the perception of clinical experience. Method: The study used a Q-method to measure perception of clinical practice. Thirty-six statements made up the finalized Q-sample. The P sample used thirty three nursing college students from K university. The initial collection was done in the first semester of their junior year and second collection was done in the last semester of their senior year. The Q-sorts by each student were coded and analysed with the Quanl PC program. Result: Many students classified as having the perception type 'alienation of ideal and reality' or 'perception of limitation of ability' in the initial clinical practice changed to the type, 'active participation' by the final clinical practice. Further, in the initial clinical practice, part of 'active participation' and 'perception of limitation of ability' changed to 'alienation of ideal and reality'. Conclusion: This study shows that perception of their clinical practice by student nurses changed in a positive direction through clinical experience and that this fact was related to the level of satisfaction with nursing. The knowledge and understanding obtained in this research provide insights for nursing faculty and students involved in nursing education.
