  • Objectives : Clerodendron trichotomumThunberg grows wild fields and mountains in South Korea and China. They have been used for anti-hypertension disease. This study was performed in order to observe the effects ofClerodendron trichotomumThunberg tea on anti-hypertension.Methods : For the study ofClerodendron trichotomumThunberg tea, we had divided male SHR (Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat) to ten groups. Control group is SHR. The treatment group is SHR which is administered tea extract at dose of 200 mg/kg/day and 500 mg/kg/day orally for 8 weeks. We measured systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, number of pulse, body weight, total cholesterol and triglyceride from blood serum. Results : The level of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly decreased by 12.5% and 44.9% inClerodendron trichotomumThunberg tea groups than control group. Heart rate ofClerodendron trichotomumThunberg tea groups, 24.5%, was significantly lower than control group. We found that treatment with the water extract fromClerodendron trichotomumThunberg leave and flower significantly decreased weight of body, total cholesterol and triglyceride to 20.4% and 27.7% compared to untreated control group, significantly (P< 0.05).Conclusions : These results suggest that leaf and flower tea ofClerodendron trichotomumThunberg tea is effective in prevention and treatment of hypertension and decreasing cholesterol. Long term consumption ofClerodendron trichotomumThunberg leaf and flower tea can be help in lowering high systolic and blood diastolic pressure, heart rate and blood serum in SHR.

  • Korean folk medicine 'NuRiJangNaMu' has been used mainly to cure neuralgia, arthritis, cough and abdominal lump. With regard to the botanical origin of NuRiJangNaMu, it has been considered to be Clerodendron species of Verbenaceae, but there was no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. To clarify the botanical origin of 'NuRiJangNaMu', the anatomical characteristics of the branches of Clerodendron species growing wild in Korea, Clerodendron trichotomum and Clerodendron trichotomum var. ferrugineum were studied. As a result, it was clarified that 'NuRiJangNaMu' was the branches of Clerodendron trichotomum.

  • The aim of this research was to investigate the antibacterial activity of Clerodendron trichotomum. Antibacterial activities of the n-hexane, methylene chloride (MC), ethyl acetate, and n-butanol fractions from C. trichotomum were tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Helicobacter pylori. The n-hexane and MC fractions showed antibacterial activity against H. pylori at a concentration of 1.7 mg/mL and showed inhibition zones of 10 and 11 mm in disc assay, respectively. Further testing of 22-dehydroclerosterol and ${\beta}$-amyrin (each 3.4 mg/mL) from the MC fraction of C. trichotomum revealed moderate antibacterial effects against E. coli, S. aureus, and H. pylori. In particular, ${\beta}$-amyrin showed clear zones of 12 and 13 mm against E. coli and H. pylori, respectively, suggesting its potential as an antibacterial agent. The active compounds from C. trichotomum might provide a promising therapeutic agent against infections by E. coli, S. aureus, and H. pylori.

  • Two acetylmartynosides, 2"-acetylmartynoside and 3"-acetylmartynoside were isolated from the $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction of Clerodendron trichotomum (Verbenaceae) by open column chromatography and MPLC. Their chemical structures were identified by the direct comparison of spectral data reported in the literature, and their antioxidant properties were evaluated. Both compounds showed antioxidant activity based on evaluations of intracellular ROS and DPPH radical scavenging activities.

  • The leaves of Clerodendron trichotomum Thunberg(CTL) is used in Chinese folk medicine for anti-inflammatory properties. We studied on the anti-inflammatory effects of CTL extracts in rat. mouse and Raw 264.7cell. 1 mg/kg of 30%. 60% methanol fraction of CTL and 1 mg/kg of indomethacin as the standard anti-inflammatory drug were administrated into rats, respectively. Carrageenan was injected subcutaneously to induce hind paw edema in rats. (omitted)

  • To search for the new development of industrial application of woody plants, the chemical composition of the volatile constituents from woody plants (Evodia daniellii, Clerodendron trichotomum, Prunus padus, and Zanthoxylum ailanthoides) was determined by GC and GC/MS spectrometric analysis with the aid of NBS, Wiley Library and RI indice searches. The major constituents were t-ocimene from the leaves of E. daniellii, linalool from the leaves of C. trichotomum, benzaldehyde from the leaves and twigs of P. padus, ${\beta}$-thujene from the leaves of Z. ailanthoides, and 2-undecanone from the stems of Z. ailanthoides. These results suggested that the major volatile constituents of woody plants could be a useful lead compound in the development of functional materials for industrial application.

  • Seeds of Clerodendron trichotomum and Lindera obtusiloba were screened for organic acids. Free organic acids were solid-phase extracted using Chromosorb P from aqueous extract of the seed powder. Organic acids were then converted to tert.-buthldimethylsilyl derivatives with subsequent analysis by dual-capillary gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. More than twenty organic acids were tentatively identified.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of acteoside and isoacteoside isolated from Clerodendron trichotomum Thunberg on melanin production in B16 melanoma cells. In DPPH radical scavenging activity, acteoside and isoacteoside had a potent anti-oxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner. Both acteoside and isoacteoside dose-dependently inhibited silica-induced ROS (reactive oxygen species) generation in B16 melanoma cells. They significantly inhibited tyrosinase activity and melanin production in MSH-stimulated B16 melanoma cells. The inhibitory effect of acteoside was more potent than that of isoacteosidee. In Western blot of tyrosinase, acteoside inhibited MSH-induced tyrosinase expression in B16 melanoma cells, which is related to the inhibitory action of acteoside on tyrosinase activity and melanin production. These results show that acteoside and isoacteoside from Clerodendron trichotomum Thunberg has a potent antioxidant activity and whitening activity. The underlying mechanism of acteoside on whitening activity may be due to the inhibition of tyrosinase activity and tyrosinase expression.
