Variations in the microstructure and mechanical properties of API X70 steel processed by piping, electrical resistance welding (ERW), and post seam annealing (PSA) are investigated in this study. In the welding zone, some elongated pearlites are formed and grains coarsening occurs due to extra heat caused by the ERW and PSA processes. After the piping, the base metal shows continuous yielding behavior and a decrease in yield and impact strengths because mobile dislocation and back stress are introduced during the piping process. On the other hand, the ERW and PSA processes additionally decreased the impact strength of welding zone at room and low temperatures because some elongated pearlites easily act as crack initiation site and coarse ferrite grains facilitate crack propagation. As a result, the fracture surface of the welding zone specimen tested at low temperature revealed mostly cleavage fracture unlike the base metal specimen.
This study was to investigate the effects of stress ratio and anisotropy on Fatigue Crack Propagation(FCP) behavior of rolled magnesium alloy AZ31B. The experimental materials were a Mg-Al-Zn magnesium alloy. The FCP test was conducted on compact tension specimen by a servo-hydraulic fatigue testing machine in air at room temperature. Compact tension specimens were prepared from the extruded parallel and vertical rolling direction. The test condition was frequency of 10Hz and sinusoidal load stress ratios are 0.1 and 0.7. The FCP rates was automatically measured by a compliance method. In the case of the FCP of AZ31B, the FCP of both direction of LT and TL by anisotropy of specimens are almost same value. In lower stress ratio, the FCP of the LT, TL specimens are increased in lower ${\Delta}K$ region but higher ${\Delta}K$ regions are almost same value. Finally, the result of observed the surface crack, it expressed the quasi-cleavage fracture in lower ${\Delta}K$ region and straight mark on the aspect of the facet in high ${\Delta}K$ region.
Microalloyed steels, which substituted by conventional quenched and tempered steels, have been used in a wide variety of structural and engineering application. The main driving force for preference of MA steels is a cost reduction which can be achieved by an omission of heat treatment. In this study, low carbon martensitic MA steels in 0.18C-0.30(0.60)Si-2.00(1.80)Mn-0.05S-1.5Cr-0.05(0.10)V-0.015Ti(wt%) were investigated to know the effects of cooling method on the mechanical properties and microstructures of Si, Mn, V added microalloyed steel at different reheating temperature. Microstructure of oil quenched steels which were comprised lath martensite, auto-tempered martensite and retained austenite, had more various structure than that of air cooled steel made of mainly bainite. Therefore, oil quenched steels, which had more various microstructure, had better strength-toughness balance compare to air cooled steels. In the impact test, fracture mode of oil quenched steels, which showed good mechanical properties, were dimple, but that of air cooled steels were cleavage.
To investigate the effect of tungsten addition on mechanical properties, we prepared refractory (62χ)Nb-18Si-l00Mo-l0Ti-χW (χ=0, 5, 10 and 15 mol.%) in-situ composites by the conventional arc-casting technique, and then explored the microstructure, hardness and elastic modulus at ambient temperature and tensile properties at 1670 K. The microstructure consists of relatively fine (Nb, Mo, W, Ti)/sub 5/Si₃, silicide and a Nb solid solution matrix, and the fine eutectic microstructure becomes predominant at a Si content of around 18 mol.%. The hardness of (Nb, Mo, W, Ti(/sub 5/Si₃, silicide in a W-free sample is 1680 GPa, and goes up to 1980 GPa in a W 15 mol.% sample. The hardness, however, of Nb solid solution does not exhibit a remarkable difference when the nominal W content is increased. The elastic modulus shows a similar tendency to the hardness. The optimum tensile properties of the composites investigated are achieved at W 5 mol.% sample, which exhibits a relatively good ultimate strength of 230 MPa and an excellent balance of yield strength of 215 MPa, and an elongation of 3.7%. The SEM fractography generally indicates a ductile fracture in the W-free sample, and a cleavage rupture in W-impregnated ones.
Magnesium alloys are becoming important material for light weight car body, due to their low specific density but high specific strength. However they have a poor weldability, caused high oxidization tendency and low vapor temperature. In this study, the welding performance of magnesium alloys was investigated for automobile application. The materials were rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains Al and Zn such as AZ3l , AZ6l and AZ9l. Three types of welding process were studied, that were GTAW, Laser beam welding and FSW. To evaluate the weldability, we examined the appearance of welding bead. Also we checked bead shape and internal defects such as crack and porosity on cross section of welding bead. The mechanical property was measured for welded specimen by tensile test. For determination of the strength change by welding process, the hardness profile across the welding center was measured. For the results, the tensile properties of welded specimen were decreased obviously on all welding process. For the fusion welding process such as GTAW and laser beam welding, the surface of the welding bead was covered with oxidized magnesium dust but it was removed by simple cleaning work as wipe-out with tissue. Also under cut, that caused vaporization of base metal was occurred. for the friction stir welding, there was no oxidation, under-cut or internal defects. However it had poor weld performance, the reason was cleavage fracture occurred at plastic deformation zone. For welding of magnesium alloy, the laser beam welding process was recommended.
In order to clarify the effect of Nb addition on the ductile-brittle transition property of sintered TiC, TiC-10 mol% Nb composites were researched using a three-point bending test at temperatures from room temperature to 2020 K, and the fracture surface was observed by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the Nb addition decreases the ductile-brittle transition temperature of sintered TiC by 300 K and increases the ductility. The room temperature bending strength was maintained at up to 1800 K, but drastically dropped at higher temperatures in pure TiC. The strength increased moderately to a value of 320MPa at 1600 K in TiC-10 mol% Nb composites, which is 40% of the room temperature strength. Pores were observed in both the grains and the grain boundaries. It can be seen that, as Nb was added, the size of the grain decreased. The ductile-brittle transition temperature in TiC-10 mol% Nb composites was determined to be 1550 K. Above 1970 K, yieldpoint behavior was observed. When the grain boundary and cleavage strengths exceed the yield strength, plastic deformation is observed at about the same stress level in bending as in compression. The effect of Nb addition is discussed from the viewpoint of ability for plastic deformation.

Many researches have published numerous papers about the high-strain-rate obtained from Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) tests. And 6.5wt%Si steel is widely known as an excellent magnetic material because its magnetostriction is nearly zero. Single crystals are prepared by the Floating Zone(FZ) method, which melts the alloy by the use of a high temperature electron beam in a pure argon gas condition. In this paper, the fracture behavior of the poly crystals and single crystals (DO$_3$phase) of Fe-6.5wt%Si alloy by SHPB test is observed. The comparison of high-strain-rate results with static results was done. Obtained main results are as follows: (1) Fe-6.5wt%Si alloy has higher strength at high-strain-rate tensile. SHPB results of polycrystal are twice as high as static results. (2) From the fractography, the cleavage steps are remarkably reduced in the SHPB test compared with the static test.
Grey cast iron containing a small amount of Cu and Mo to improve the effect of heat treatment and microstructure were cast and them austenitized. After austenitizing the specimens of castings were austempered at 250$^{\circ}C$, 300$^{\circ}C$ and 350$^{\circ}C$. The effects of matrix structures on mechanical properties and fracture characteristics at the different austempering temperature were investigated. Tensile strength, hardness and impact toughness of austempered grey cast iron showed maximum valve 359 MPa, 321 HB, 3.9 CVN respectively at the lowest austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$. $K_{IC}$ of gref cast iron at a austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$, showed maximum 44 MPa.$m^{1/2}$ even though the amount of retained austenite in it is only 16%. This mainly comes from the refinement of the retained austenite. Quasi-cleavage pattern with a little fit of fibrous pattern was shown on the fractured surface of austempered grey cast iron at all of the temperatures tested.

High strength steel sheets used for automobile outer-panels have been intensively studied for developing a lightweight automobile under a strong pressure of the requirements for enhancing the mileage and energy saving in production of automobile parts. It is known that high strength steels are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement, The susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement increases with increasing its strength. However, the effect of hydrogen on the fracture behavior of high strength steels, though investigated extensively, has not been fully understood. In this paper, hydrogen was charged with 590DP steels by electrochemical method and its content was measured by hydrogen determinator with the different charging conditions. It was shown that the SP energy and maximum load decreased with increasing charging time. The results of SEM-fractography investigation for the hydrogen contained samples showed that a small portion of dimples on cleavage-fractured surface were observed and the size of the dimples were decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time.
The relationship between microstructures and tensile properties depending on various solution treatment temperature and cooling rate of Ti-6A1-4V alloy have been investigated. The complex and random edge shaped $\alpha$ phases were formed after the 1st solution treatment at $\beta$ region and the 2nd solution treatment at $900^{\circ}C$, which was followed by furnace cooled. When the specimen was subjected to the 2nd solution treated at $950^{\circ}C$, and furnace cooled, $\alpha$ phase changed its morphology to equiaxed structure. The aspect ratio showing the appreciation basis of microstructual refinement decreases with the temperature of 1st and 2nd solution treatment. The slightly decrease in strength were observed in the Widmanstltten structures than in the bimodal structures. Also, ductility of the Widmanstatten structures was considerable lower than that of bimodal structures. The tensile-fractured surface of the Widmanstatten structures appears to be quasi-cleavage and dimple fracture, while that of the bimodal structures was the type of ductile fracture. The tensile fracture surface of the bimodal structures can easily be separated into cental crack areas lying generally perpendicular to the tensile axis and shear lip areas lying at angles of high shear(around 45 deg.) to the tensile axis.
