  • In order to alleviate the environmental pressure caused by production process of thermal power plants, the application of cleaner production is imperative. To estimate the implementation effects of cleaner production in thermal plants and optimize the strategy duly, it is of great significance to take a comprehensive evaluation for sustainable development. In this paper, a hybrid model that integrated the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) algorithm optimized by grid search (GS) algorithm is proposed. Based on the establishment of the evaluation index system, AHP is employed to pre-process the data and GS is introduced to optimize the parameters in LSSVM, which can avoid the randomness and inaccuracy of parameters' setting. The results demonstrate that the combined model is able to be employed in the comprehensive evaluation of the cleaner production in the thermal power plants.

  • Among the activities of industrial companies, manufacturing processes are major sources of environmental problems. So, many companies with manufacturing processes have taken the necessary actions to comply with environmental regulations. But, most of them have mainly focused on the 'end-of-pipe techniques' to reduce pollutants in a short period of time. However, these reactive approaches are basically symptomatic treatments and no more appropriate for sustainable development and growth. The cleaner production, which deals with pollutants at the place of origin, has been introduced as a solution to the problem. In this paper, an operational model of cleaner production system Is proposed and the factors, which affect tile performance of cleaner production, are identified through the field survey of 37 manufacturing companies.

  • Cleaner production is of substantial importance in changing the environmental approach within advanced industrialized countries. The critical principles involve fundamental understanding of diverse industrial processes, adherence to the earliest techniques of a hierarchy for reducing wastes, and utilization of an underlying thought process to achieve pollution prevention successes that are both technically feasible and cost-effective. Chemical engineering has played a major and unique role in this environmental field. Improving the sustainability of cleaner production will rest on including this subject in the curriculum of university engineering.

  • This study shows the evaluation and consulting for pollution prevention of dye production by cleaner production methodology. Especially, this study intended to investigate the methods for reduction of process water and recovery of organic solvent (DMF), and to modify the process for higher qualified products in the acid dye production by cleaner production methodology. This methodology, consisting of 7 sequential phases (business leadership decision to start, problem definition, evaluation of the screened options, option selection for implementation, implementation, monitoring and sustainable implementation), is based on initial developments in the USA and Western Europe. Reduction of process water over 25%, recovery of DMF and solubility enhancement of acid dye over 2 times were achieved.

  • In a knowledge-based information society, the technology in itself is one of the most valuable information and in common use as assets. Assessment of a technology depends on many factors such as the grade of technology, marketability, and the time of evaluation, which makes it much more difficult to perform than the other tangible properties. Ultimately, it should be extremely important to consider environmental aspect for technology assessment in order to cope voluntarily with the change of uncertain future toward highly reliable evaluation.

  • In this paper, the effects of large national industrial complexes on the generation of local hazardous substances were analyzed based on their size, industrial characteristics. In Seoul, the proportion of hazardous substances, which adversely affect the atmosphere of the entire city, was much less than that of other regional industrial complexes, centered on knowledge-based industries. On the other hand, other national industrial complexes based on manufacturing industries, such as machinery, metal, electricity, and electronics, were found to have a combination of industry characteristics and logistics and regional characteristics. Overall, it was found that the increase in productivity in large national industrial complexes was not proportional to the increase in hazardous substances throughout the region. In addition, it was also found that in North Gyeongsang Province, which is based on the heavy chemical industry, the percentage of hazardous substances is different from other regions due to the characteristics of the industry.
