This study was conducted to reclassify Yongdang series based on the second edition of Soil Taxonomy : A Basic System of Soil Classification for Making and Interpreting Soil Surveys. Morphological properties of typifying pedon of Yongdang series were investigated and physico-chemical properties were analyzed according to Soil Survey Laboratory Methods Manual. The typifying pedon of Yongdang series has dark reddish brown (5YR 2/3) silt loam Ap horizon (0~14 cm), dark brown (7.5YR 2/3) silt loam BA horizon (14~32 cm), dark brown (7.5YR 2/3) clay loam Bt horizon (32~57 cm), dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) silty clay loam Btx1 horizon (57~110 cm), and dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) silty clay loam Btx2 horizon(more than 110 cm). That occurs on gently sloping lava plain and is derived from baslt materials. The typifying pedon has an argillic horizon from a depth of 32 to more than 110 cm and a fragipan from a depth of 57 to more than 110 cm. That has a base saturation (sum of cations) of 35% or more at 75 cm below the upper boundary of the fragipan. That can be classified as Alfisol, not as Inceptisol. The typifying pedon has udic soil moisture regime, and can be classified as Udalf. That has a fragipan with an upper boundary within 100 cm of the mineral soil surface, and keys out as Fragiudalf. Also that meets the requirements of Typic Fragiudalf. That has 18% to 35% clay at the particle-size control section, and has thermic soil temperature regime. Yongdang series can be classified as fine loamy, mixed, thermic family of Typic Fragiudalfs, not as fine loamy, mixed, thermic family of Aquic Eutrudepts.
The identification of effective root zone would clarify dynamics of plant available water and soil water balance. Using the relationship between soil properties and electrical resistivity (ER) the purpose of this research is to identify soil zone affected by a plant root activity using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) technique. Four plastic containers were prepared for two different soil textures (clay and sandy loam) and one container for each texture was selected for planting four corn seedlings (Zea mays L.) and the others were prepared for the blank. For ERT monitoring, we prepared 0.8 m plastic sticks with 17 electrodes installed with 5 cm space. The Ministing (AGI Inc., Texas) instrument for electrical resistivity measurement and semi-auto converter of electrode arrangement were set up for dipole-dipole array. During 2 months of the corns growing, ERT monitoring was made 3 to 4 days after the irrigation practice. Despite of the same amount water supplied into soils, two textures showed very different apparent resistivity values due to different clay content. The apparent electrical resistivity is consistently lower in clay loam comparing to sandy loam soil implying that plant root does not significantly alter the overall trend of resistivity. When plant root system, however, is active both soils with plants showed 2-7 times higher electrical resistivity and higher coefficient variation than soils without plant, implying the effect of root system on the resistivity, in which may caused by. This result suggests plant root activities regulating the soil water dynamics mainly control the variation of electrical resistivity over soil textural difference. Therefore the identification of water uptake zone would highly be correlated to plant root activities, thus ERT will be feasible approach to identify spatial characteristics of a plant root activity.
Effects of the zeolite particle size on the soil chemical properties and on rice growth was investigated on the pot with the loamy sand (Sadu series) and silty clay loam(Paju series) soils. All the zeolite treatments brought the increase of unhulled grain yield on the both loamy sand and silty clay loam soils. Unhulled grain yield increased with increasing the amount of zeolite applied and with decreasing the amount of particle size of zeolite applied on both soils. Unhulled grain yield increased significantly by 11.1% (22.79g/head) with 2ton/10a of smaller than $106{\mu}m$ size zeolite on the loamy sand soil and on the silty clay loam soil, yield increased by 9.3% (24.98g/head) with 1.5ton/10a of smaller than $106{\mu}m$ size zeolite. CEC, pH and contents of exchangeable cations of the soil after experiment were raised by increasing the amount of zeolite and also by decreasing the particle size of zeolite at both soil. At the heading stage, the zeolite treatments improved the growth of rice plant compared to control. The nutrient contents(T-N, Ca, Mg, K, Na), except phosphorus, in the rice plant grown on the zeolite treated soils were higher than control plot.
Artificially crushed sands occupy approximately 30 percent of the total consumption in South Korea. The demand for the crushed sands is expected to rise in the future. Most manufacturers use granitic rocks to produce the crushed sands. During the manufacturing process, fine fractions (i.e., sludges or particles smaller than 63 microns) are removed through the process of flocculation. The fine fraction occupies about 15% of the total weight. The sludges are comprised of quartz, feldspars, calcite, and various kinds of clay minerals. Non-clay minerals occupy more than 75 percent of the sluges weight, according to the XRD semi-quantification measurement. Micas, kaolinites, chlorite, vermiculite, and smectites occur as minor constituents. The sludges from Jurassic granites contain more kaolinites and $14{\AA}$-types than those from the Cretaceous ones. The chemical analysis clearly shows the difference between the parent rocks and the sludges in chemical compositions. Much of colored components in the sludges was accumulated as the weathering products. Particle size analysis results show that the sludges can be categorized as silt loam in a sand-silt-clay triangular diagram. This result was for her confirmed by the hydraulic conductivity data. In South Korea, the sludges remained after crushed sand production are classified as an industrial waste because of their impermeability, and which is caused by their high silt and clay fractions.

An empirical model of nitrous oxide emission from agricultural soil has been applied. It is based on the relationship between $N_2O$ and three soil parameters, soil mineral N(ammonium plus nitrate) content in the topsoil(0-15cm), soil water-field pore space, and soil temperature, determined in a study on clay loam and sandy loam at the pepper field in 2004. For comparisons between estimated and observed values of $N_2O$ emissions in the pepper field, it was investigated that $N_2O$ amount in the clay loam and sandy loam were overestimated as 12.2% and less estimated as 30%, respectively. However, $N_2O$ emissions were overestimated as 27.1% in the clay loam and 14.7% in the sandy loam from $N_2O$ gas samples collected once a week at the same time analyzing soil parameters. This modelling approach, based as it is well established and widely used soil measurements, has the potential to provide flux estimates from a much wider range of agricultural sites than would be possible by direct measurement of $N_2O$ emissions.

To develop proper soil management practices for reducing soil erosion, experiments were carried out by using lysimeters in Pyeongchang highland, Korea. Lysimeters installed at Hoenggye bad 13% slope, 15 m slope length and 3 m width. Lysimeters with 23% slope, 15 m slope length and 3 m width were also installed at Yongsan. Soil textures in Hoenggye and Yongsan lysimeter plots were silty clay loam and sandy loam, respectively. In the lysimeters potato was cultivated, and slant furrow culture and contour culture were applied. Up-down furrow and continuous fallow lysimeter was included in the experiments as a control plot. For the slant furrow and contour culture methods, minimum furrow mulching and gravel barrier were placed at each end of the furrows in the lysimeters from April to October in 2000 and 2001 to prevent soil and nutrient losses. In Heonggye, in two years experiments, average soil loss of 17 Mg/ha was found in the up-down and continuous fallow lysimeter and 2.6 Mg/ha from furrow minimum straw and slant furrow treatment, and 1.8 Mg/ha from slant furrow and gravel bag treatment. In the contour culture, the soil losses were further reduced. In Yongsan, soil loss in the slant furrow culture without any protection treatment was 167 Mg/ha, and the soil loss was reduce to 61 and 86 Mg/ha with minimum straw and gravel bag treatments, respectively. The soil loss could be reduced more than 45% by furrow minimum straw and gravel barrier. The furrow minimum straw or gravel bag barrier successfully reduced soil loss in clay loam soil in Heonggye, but still the treatments were not enough to reduce soil loss in saprolite piled sandy loam soil in Yongsan.
A series of field and laboratory experiments were conducted to find out the changes of some soil chemical constituents in different soil depth with three different soil textures as Bongnam-clayey, Gwanghwal-silty loam and Mangyeong fine sandy soil on the assessment of reclamation duration in Fluvio-marine soil. The result obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Exchangeable potassium, calcium, magnessium, sodium with manganes, silica and cation exchange capacity were remarkably decreased with assessment of reclamation duration. Decreasing tendency was pronounced more in sandy soil than silty loam or clayly soil. 2. Soil organic matter content in top soil was increased with increasing of reclamation years. From reclamation time, about 30 years in clayly and about 80 years in silty loam and sandy soil were necessary for the maintanance of averaged organic matter content to 2.5%. 3. Potassium activity ratio ($K/{\sqrt{Ca+Mg+Na}}$) was differed with soil depth, soil texture and assessment of reclamation duration. About 50 years is may be necessary for the maintanance of potassium activities ratio in ordinary paddy soil of 0.05-0.2. 4. Percent of adsorbed sodium (PAS), ratio of adsorbed sodium (RAS) and ratio of sodium adsorbtion(RSA) were remarkably decreased with assessment of reclamation duration. Specially, decreasing tendency was pronounced more in sandy soil than silty loam and clayly soil 5. Amount of clay content in subsoil was appearently decreased during 30 years of reclamation, but clay contents in top soil was appearently decreased 50 years after reclamation.
This study was conducted to investigate the absorption and translocation of pretilachlor [2-chloro-2, 6-diethyl-N-(n-propoxyethyl)-acetanilide] in plants and to evaluate the mobility in soil using the $^{14}C-or$ non-labelled compound in laboratory. Rice plant(Oryza sativa L.) was very tolerant to pretilachlor. Echinochloa crus-galli P. Beauv. was completely controlled by pretilachlor at 60g a.i./10a. At the 120g a.i./l0a, growth of Cyperus serotinus Rottb. and Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. was inhibited by 75% and 25%, respectively. The growth inhibition depended on absorbed amount of $^{14}C-pretilachlor$. The greatest concentration of $^{14}C$ was found in E. crus-galli, whereas the lowest was determined in rice plant. The rate of absorption and translocation in E. curs-galli was faster than in rice plan. Pretilachlor moved to 6cm deep in sandy clay loam, clay loam and loam soils, but to 10cm in sandy loam soil. In the soils herbicide-treated layer was found 0 to 2cm profile.
This study was carried out to obtain the effects of soil environment and characteristics on the growth and yield of young rice seedling. Twenty four rice fields were selected among the labor saving mechanization complex, and the growth statu s and various soil characteristics were investigated The young rice seedling planted soils were located at the range of elevation 5m to 210m, and the average water holding days was 5.1 days, and drainage class were mainly moderately well to imperfectly. The plant height on 30th day after machine transplanting were higher and the tiller numbers were smaller at the higher clay contents at moderately well and imperfectly drained soils. In case of sandy loam soils, the better the drainage class, the higher plant and more tillers. Soil hardness was lower in sandy loam, and the bulk densities of loam, silty clay loam and poorly drained soils were lower than the other fields. There were not differences of soil chemical properties between the soil textural groups but organic matter content were higher in poorly drained soils. The rice yields of young seedling planted fields were negatively correlated to soil bulk density and highly significantly correlated to the exchangeable calcium contents of the soils. The average yield of young rice seedlings was 487kg/10a, 2.5% higher than semi-adult rice seedling of 475kg/10a.
This research was initiated to enhance the tilth of fine-textured soil for turf growth by incorporation of crumb rubber shredded from used tires. A specific objective was to determine the physical properties of soil mixes amended with different grade and amount of crumb rubber in soils. Two soils and three different grades(3.5, 6.5 and 9.5 mm) of crumb rubber were used. The soils selected were an Arenzville silt loam(coarse-silty, mixed, nonacid, mesic Typic Udifluvents) and a Hosmer silty clay loam(fine-silty, mixed, mesic Typic Fragiudalfs). The amount of crumb rubber mixed in soil ranged from 0 to 0.4 $g{\cdot}g^{-1}$(using 0.05 $g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) increments and 0 as a control. For each treatment, soil cores were constructed following the recommendation by the United States Golf Association Green Section Record. Results indicated that porosity of the mixes decreased as the amount of crumb rubber increased. Regardless of the grade of crumb rubber, mixes with less than 0.15 $g{\cdot}g^{-1}$ of crumb rubber in fine-textured soil could not enhance their macro-porosity and hydraulic conductivity. However, as the amendment increased over 0.15 $g{\cdot}g^{-1}$, the tilth of the mixes had improved significantly macro-porosity, hydraulic conductivity and air permeability, as compared with a control.
