The objectives of this study were to find the sprouting condition and to establish the optimum production methods of plug seedlings in yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia Poepp. & Endl.). The sprouting ratio was greatest at $30\pm 1^{\circ}C$ at 20 days after planting. Crowns with single buds were more effective than those with two or more buds for sprouting, which might be due to the apical dominance. Planting the shoots separated from crown after sprouting in the single- and double-layer polyethylene-covered greenhouses reduced seedling period with 25% and 50%, respectively. Planting the shoots after sprouting was more effective than planting the crown buds. Double-layer polyethylene-covered green-house was good for plug seedling production than open field or single-layer polyethylene-covered greenhouse. The bed soils composed of clay loam : compost or sand : compost (1:l=v:v) were more effective to produce plug seedlings than only clay loam, sand or compost. Seedlings could be produced at 30 days after planting in our studies.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of top dressing on the thatch losses in bentgrass (Agrostis palustris). Top dressing materials used were clay loam, sand, zeolite, and sawdust. Data were taken on July 10 ($T_1$), Aug. 7 (($T_2$ ) and Sept. 4 (($T_3$) respectively. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The dry weight of accumulated thatch was significantly different between treatments and dates of survery, and for the interaction of treatment x date of survey. 2. The dry weight of accumulated thatch showed a tendency to decrease as growth progressed in all treatments. (Table 1) The dry weight of accumulated thatch was the smallest at sand but the largest at clay loam in each date of survey. 3. The losses rate of accumulated thatch showed a tendency to slightly increase as affected by top dressing materials. (Table 2) Sand showed a significantly higher losses rate of accumulated thatch than that of other treatments. 4. The dry weight of accumulated thatch showed a significant negative correlation (p<0.01) with the losses rate of accumulated thatch. (Fig. 1) 5. Turf coverage was significant difference between treatments and dates of survey. 6. Turf coverage showed a tendency to increase as growth progressed in all treatments. (Table 3) 7. Turf coverage indicated significant negative correlation (p<0.001) with the dry weight of accumulated thatch. (Fig. 2)

Galvanized steel pipe, copper pipe and stainless steel pipe, which is being used in waterworks piping materials. In case of galvanized steel pipe, the precipitation of a product is being generated due to the pollution of the tap water, a white water phenomenon, and various corrosion reaction because a zinc ion is melted by tap water. And in case of a cupper pipe, many problems which is harm in sanitation appeared because of a inflow of harmfulness substance by a frequent accident of a water leakage. So, to prevent these problems, it is substituted for stainless steel pipe. However, those problems is still occurring because of badness of welding, a problem of a water leakage in connection part, and a increment of construction expenses. Therefore, this research has examined the laying period according to each piping thickness and a corrosion shape according to each laying depth after laying in various soils(sandy loam, loamy, clay loam, clay) using galvanized steel pipe, copper pipe, and stainless steel pipe. That is, we has studied the data which is necessary for a rational method of preserving the quality of water by examining the corrosion properties of piping materials in the soil environment which waterworks piping materials is being used.
Poplar trees from the Salicaceae family over the years have been utilized for various reasons which include prevention of deforestation as well as phytoremediation. This study aims to determine the optimal pre-treatment and soil conditions required for propagation of poplar cuttings for increased initial adaptability and survival rate. Five poplar clones (Hanan, 110, 107, DN-34, 52-225) were selected for IBA, soil composition treatments on propagation. IBA pre-treatment of cuttings were utilized 0, 10, and 100 mg l-1 concentrations. Soil compositions were amended with TKS-2+perlite 2:1 (v:v) and sandy clay loam mixed with artificial soil. According to the greenhouse results 10 mg l-1 of IBA showed a significant increase in plant height whereas 100 mg l-1 inhibited plant growth except in clone 110. Soil composition severely affected root growth and hence overall growth of the clones. Sandy clay loam soil had poor to stunted growth compared to TKS-2+perlite.
To obtain the basic data on reclaimed tideland soils, 90 soil samples were collected from 9 tideland reclamation project areas in Korea. The soils consisted of clay (2.0 to 35.0 percents), silt (2.0 to 80.0 percents), and sand (8.0 to 95.0 percents), and were dominantly classified sandy loam and silty loam. The soils had pH of 4.5 to 9.1, organic matter of 0.50 to $19.20g\;kg^{-1}$, total nitrogen of 4 to $1,159mg\;kg^{-1}$, and avaliable phosphorus (as $P2_O_5$) of 3.5 to $147.7mg\;kg^{-1}$. The electrical conductivity in soil saturation-paste extracts (ECe) ranged between $0.62dS\;m^{-1}$ and $31.60dS\;m^{-1}$ and the concentrations of sodium and magnesium ions were higher than those of potassium and calcium ions. The magnitude of the ECe was as low as that of normal level in Nam-Po, Pu-Sa, and Kye-Hwa reclamation project areas having sandy loam texture, but was as high as that of normal level saline-sodic level in Nam-Yang and So-Po reclamation project areas having silty loam texture even though the soils were cultivated more than 10 years as a paddy. Some part of Saemangeum area was surveyed and soil textures were various; some were silt loam and some were sandy loam. The ECe values were very high in topsoil and subsoil.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of various kinds of composts on the change of nutrition loss in upland soils. Field experiments were conducted in the loam and sandy loam soils, while the clay loam and sandy loam soils were used for laboratory experiments. Various kinds of composts such as poultry manure compost(PMC), cow manure compost(CMC), human excrement sludge(HES), and food industrial sludge compost(FISC) were applied annually at rates of 0, 40, and $80mg\;ha^{-1}$ to soils grown with soybean and maize plants for 4 years during 1994 to 1997. The results of this study were as follows : The loss of nutrients in the form of cation and anion by run-off water increased with the increase of compost application rate. Compared with bare soils, maize cultivation decreased the nutrient loss by run-off from soils by 43% in anionic form and 32% in cationic form. Amount of cation loss were ordered $K^+$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $NH_4{^+} $ and that of anion loss were ordered $SO_4{^{2-}}$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $PO_4{^{3-}}$. Nutrient loss of sand loam soil in the cation and anion by percolation water increased 1.7 times compared with loam soil. $NO_3{^-}-N$ contents in percolated water were high at the initial stage after compost application, and the amounts were higher in sandy loam soil than loam soil. The maize cultivation also decreased the $NO_3{^-}-N$ contents in percolated water by 82% in loam soil, and 58% in sand loam soil. Soil pH of composts determined by laboratory incubation test increased pH 6.1~6.8 application with poultry and cow manure compost but application with human excrement sludge decreased pH 4.5~4.7. Soil EC were increased initially composts application and decreased up to 2 weeks, thereafter kept a certain level. Nitrogen mineralization rates of composts determined by laboratory incubation test at $25^{\circ}C$ were 39~76% in sandy loam soil, and 16~48% in clay loam soil.
The morphological, physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics of planosols in Korea were studied in an effort to establish the suitabilition of the planosols for agricultural development. The Yeongog series which are planosols were established in Korea. Results from the Yeongog series are briefly as follows : 1. Morphologically, the surface soils are brown to dark brown friable loam and subsoils are of varied colors but mainly are dark brown, black and pale brown mottles. The texture of these horizons are silty clay loam with moderate to strong platy structure and clay cutans are on the ped faces. The consistences of these horizons are extremely compact and hard when moist and sticky, plastic when wet. The substrata show varied soil colors and loam to clay loam. 2. Physically, the clay content of the Yeongog soils is highest in the subsoils and gradually decreases below the subsoils. Water holding capacity and bulk desity is higher than in other mineral soils. 3. Chemically, the organic matter content is low and soil reaction ranges from very strongly to strongly acid. The cation exchange capacity is medium and base saturation a high. Active iron, easily reducible manganese and available silicate are high compared with normal soils. 4. In chemical composition of clay fraction of the Yeongog series, sesquioxide ratio, $Fe_2O_3$, $K_2O$ and MgO are high. The cation exchange capacity of the clay fraction is also very high. 5. The clay minerals in Yeongog series are mainly kaoline, vermiculite with Al interlayers and illite. The quarts, primary minerals are in the Yeongog soils. 6. These soils are formed in a warm, humid climate under native grasses on the terraces and rolling or hilly footslopes. In soil classification, the Yeongog soils are classified planosols with claypan. According to 7th approximation system in U.S.A., the Yeongog series are classified as Fragiudalfs because they have an argillic horizon, a hard pan and a high base saturation which is more than 35 percent and classified as Eutric Planosols by FAO/UNESCO classification system.
Fly ash is the fine ash particles that are flying out of chimney of the thermoelectric power plant where coals are used as fuel. There are two kinds of fly ashes from anthracite and bituminous coal. By scanning electron microscope(SEM) morphological feature of fly ash was confirmed to the exact spherical particles with the diameter variation from the fine to the largest about $50{\mu}m$(mainly silty particle). Surface of anthracite ash particle was very smooth but that of bituminous was somewhat coarse. To find the utilization of fly ash for improving soil permeability, soils of 4 kinds of different texture, clay, clay loam, sandy clay loam and sand mere applied with 7 levels of fly ash: 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100%(w/w) and their saturated hydraulic conductivity(Ks) were determined at each application by constant head method. In clay soil with low water permeability, Ks value was increased about 10 times from $10^{-8}$ to $10^{-7}m\;s^{-1}$ level with application of 10% fly ash and it was slightly increased with increasing fly ash application from 40 to 80%. In clay loam Ks value was about $10^{-7}m\;s^{-1}$ level and its value was not influenced by the fly ash application. In sandy clay loam with relatively high permeability, Ks value was decreased about 10 times from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-6}m\;s^{-1}$ level with application of 10% fly ash and also decreased about 50 times from $10^{-5}$ to $5.0{\times}10^{-7}m\;s^{-1}$ with application of more than 20% fly ash. In sand with very high permeability, Ks value was decreased about 10 times from $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-5}m\;s^{-1}$ level with application of 10% fly ash and also decreased about 100 times from $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-6}m\;s^{-1}$ level with application of 20% fly ash and continuously decreased about 500 times from $10^{-4}$ to $5.0{\times}10^{-7}m\;s^{-1}$ level with application of more than 40% fly ash. In conclusion by fly ash application saturated hydraulic conductivity was increased in clay soil, on the contrary it was decreased in sandy soils. Fly ash may be used as a material for amelioration of soil permeability.
The long term ecological effects have been reported in natural forest ecosystem due to various anthropogenic disturbances, especially in tropics of the world. The present study was carried out in the sanctuary area of central India to assess the changes on litter biomass, litterfall pattern and soil attributes under different disturbance regimes. The study area includes three forest circles i.e., Bhoramdeo, Jamunpani and Salehwara each comprising three disturbances regimes viz., high, medium and low severity of biotic pressure. A noticeable variation and impact were recorded in different sites. The impact varies significantly from least disturbed sites to highly disturbed sites across the circle and among different disturbances level. The seasonal mean total forest floor biomass across the forest circles varied from 2.18 to $3.30t\;ha^{-1}$. It was found highest under lightly disturbed site and lowest under heavily disturbed site. Total litterfall varied from 5.11 to $7.06t\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ across the forest circle. Lowest litterfall was recorded at heavily disturbed site while highest in lightly disturbed site. Annual turnover of litter varied from 69-73% and the turnover time ranged between 1.37-1.45 years. The turn over time was higher for heavily disturbed site and lower for lightly disturbed site. The heavily disturbed site of all the circle showed the sandy loam soil texture, whereas moderately and lightly disturbed site comprised of sandy loam, sandy clay loam and clay soil texture, respectively. The bulk density decreases from heavily disturbed site to lightly disturbed site and the pH of soils ranged from 5.57-6.89 across the circle. Across the circle the total soil nitrogen ranged from 0.12-0.21%, phosphorus from 10.03-24.00 kg and Potassium from $139.88-448.35kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Our results demonstrate that anthropogenic disturbances regime significantly influences forest floors in terms of mass, composition and dynamics along with litterfall rate and soil properties.
Various methods are used to remediate soil contaminated with heavy metals or petroleum. In recent years, harsh physical and chemical remediation methods are being used to increase remediation efficiency, however, such processes could affect soil properties and degrade the ecological functions of the soil. Effects of soil washing, thermal desorption, and land farming, which are the most frequently used remediation methods, on the physicochemical properties of remediated soil were investigated in this study. For soils smaller than 2 mm, the soil texture were changed from sandy clay loam to sandy loam because of the decrease in the clay content after soil washing, and from loamy sand to sandy loam because of the decrease in the sand content and increase in silt content during thermal desorption, however, the soil texture remained unchanged after land farming process. The water-holding capacity, organic matter content, and total nitrogen concentration of the tested soil decreased after soil washing. A change in soil color and an increase in the available phosphate concentration were observed after thermal desorption. Exchangeable cations, total nitrogen, and available phosphate concentration were found to decrease after land farming; these components were probably used by microorganisms during as well as after the land farming process because microbial processes remain active even after land farming. A study of these changes can provide information useful for the reuse of remediated soil. However, it is insufficient to assess only soil physicochemical properties from the viewpoint of the reuse of remediated soil. Potential risks and ecological functions of remediated soil should also be considered to realize sustainable soil use.
