While most machine learning research has been primarily concerned with the development of systems that implement one type of learning strategy, we use a multistrategy approach which integrates rule induction learning and instance-based learning, and show how this marriage allows for overall better performance. In the rule induction learning phase, we derive an entropy function, based on Hellinger divergence, which can measure the amount of information each inductive rule contains, and show how well the Hellinger divergence measures the importance of each rule. We also propose some heuristics to reduce the computational complexity by analyzing the characteristics of the Hellinger measure. In the instance-based learning phase, we improve the current instance-based learning method in a number of ways. The system has been implemented and tested on a number of well-known machine learning data sets. The performance of the system has been compared with that of other classification learning technique.
This paper presents new pruning and learning methods for the fuzzy rule-based classifier. The structure of the proposed classifier is framed from the fuzzy sets in the premise part of the rule and the Bayesian classifier in the consequent part. For the simplicity of the model structure, the unnecessary features for each fuzzy rule are eliminated through the iterative pruning algorithm. The quality of the feature is measured by the proposed correctness method, which is defined as the ratio of the fuzzy values for a set of the feature values on the decision region to one for all feature values. For the improvement of the classification performance, the parameters of the proposed classifier are finely adjusted by using the gradient descent method so that the misclassified feature vectors are correctly re-categorized. The cost function is determined as the squared-error between the classifier output for the correct class and the sum of the maximum output for the rest and a positive scalar. Then, the learning rules are derived from forming the gradient. Finally, the fuzzy rule-based classifier is tested on two data sets and is found to demonstrate an excellent performance.
This paper presents an approach for classifying scheduling problems and selecting a heuristic rule to yield best solution in terms of certain performance measure(s). Classification parameters are employed from previous studies on job shop scheduling and project scheduling. Neural network is used for learning and estimating the performance of heuristic rules. In addition, multi-criteria decision making techniques are employed to combine the preferences for each performance measure and heuristic rule for the problems with multi-objectives.

k-nearest neighbor (K-NN) is a well-known classification algorithm, being feature space-based on nearest-neighbor training examples in machine learning. However, K-NN, as we know, is a lazy learning method. Therefore, if a K-NN-based system very much depends on a huge amount of history data to achieve an accurate prediction result for a particular task, it gradually faces a processing-time performance-degradation problem. We have noticed that many researchers usually contemplate only classification accuracy. But estimation speed also plays an essential role in real-time prediction systems. To compensate for this weakness, this paper proposes correlation coefficient-based clustering (CCC) aimed at upgrading the performance of K-NN by leveraging processing-time speed and plurality rule-based density (PRD) to improve estimation accuracy. For experiments, we used real datasets (on breast cancer, breast tissue, heart, and the iris) from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository. Moreover, real traffic data collected from Ojana Junction, Route 58, Okinawa, Japan, was also utilized to lay bare the efficiency of this method. By using these datasets, we proved better processing-time performance with the new approach by comparing it with classical K-NN. Besides, via experiments on real-world datasets, we compared the prediction accuracy of our approach with density peaks clustering based on K-NN and principal component analysis (DPC-KNN-PCA).
This paper presents the approach involving fault detection and diagnosis of gears using pattern recognition and Wavelet transform. It describes result of the comparison between KDI (Kullback Discrimination Information) with the nearest neighbor classification rule as one of pattern recognition methods and Wavelet transform to know a way to detect and diagnosis of gear damages experimentally. To model the damages 1) Normal (no defect), 2) one tooth is worn out, 3) All teeth faces are worn out 4) One tooth is broken. The vibration sensor was attached on the bearing housing. This produced the total time history data that is 20 pieces of each condition. We chose the standard data and measure distance between standard and tested data. In Wavelet transform analysis method, the time series data of magnitude in specified frequency (rotary and mesh frequency) were earned. As a result, the monitoring system using Wavelet transform method and KDI with nearest neighbor classification rule successfully detected and classified the damages from the experimental data.

Combined LIBS-Raman spectroscopy has been widely studied, due to its complementary capabilities as an elemental analyzer that can acquire signals of atoms, ions, and molecules. In this study, the classification of polymorphs was performed by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to overcome the limitation in molecular analysis; the results were verified by Raman spectroscopy. LIBS signals of the $CaCO_3$ polymorphs calcite and aragonite, and $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ (gypsum) and $CaSO_4$ (anhydrite), were acquired using a Nd:YAG laser (532 nm, 6 ns). While the molecular study was performed using Raman spectroscopy, LIBS could also provide sufficient key data for classifying samples containing different molecular densities and structures, using the peculiar signal ratio of $5s{\rightarrow}4p$ for the orbital transition of two polymorphs that contain Ca. The basic principle was analyzed by electronic motion in plasma and electronic transition in atoms or ions. The key factors for the classification of polymorphs were the different electron quantities in the unit-cell volume of each sample, and the selection rule in electric-dipole transitions. The present work has extended the capabilities of LIBS in molecular analysis, as well as in atomic and ionic analysis.

In this paper, we propose a classification-based approach for hybridizing statistical machine translation and rulebased machine translation. Both the training dataset used in the learning of our proposed classifier and our feature extraction method affect the hybridization quality. To create one such training dataset, a previous approach used auto-evaluation metrics to determine from a set of component machine translation (MT) systems which gave the more accurate translation (by a comparative method). Once this had been determined, the most accurate translation was then labelled in such a way so as to indicate the MT system from which it came. In this previous approach, when the metric evaluation scores were low, there existed a high level of uncertainty as to which of the component MT systems was actually producing the better translation. To relax such uncertainty or error in classification, we propose an alternative approach to such labeling; that is, a cut-off method. In our experiments, using the aforementioned cut-off method in our proposed classifier, we managed to achieve a translation accuracy of 81.5% - a 5.0% improvement over existing methods.
Purpose: As most defense technologies are classified as confidential, the corresponding International Patent Classifications (IPCs) require special attention. Consequently, the list of defense-related IPCs has been managed by the government. This paper aims to evaluate the defense-related IPCs and propose a methodology to revalidate and improve the IPC classification scheme. Methods: The patents in military technology and their corresponding IPCs during 2009~2020 were utilized in this paper. Prior to the analysis, patents are divided into private and public sectors. Social network analysis was used to analyze the convergence structure and central defense technology, and association rule mining analysis was used to analyze the convergence pattern. Results: While the public sector was highly cohesive, the private sector was characterized by easy convergence between technologies. In addition, narrow convergence was observed in the public sector, and wide convergence was observed in the private sector. As a result of analyzing the core technologies of defense technology, defense-related IPC candidates were identified. Conclusion: This paper presents a comprehensive perspective on the structure of convergence of defense technology and the pattern of convergence. It is also significant because it proposed a method for revising defense-related IPCs. The results of this study are expected to be used as guidelines for preparing amendments to the government's defense-related IPC.
In this paper, we apply a discriminative weight training to a statistical model-based voice activity detection(VAD). In our approach, the VAD decision rule is expressed as the geometric mean of optimally weighted likelihood ratios(LRs) based on a minimum classification error(MCE) method which is different from the previous works in that different weights are assigned to each frequency bin which is considered more realistic. According to the experimental results, the proposed approach is found to be effective for the statistical model-based VAD using the LR test.
Prediction of travel time on road network is one of crucial research issue in dynamic route guidance system. A new approach based on Rule-Based classification is proposed for predicting travel time. This approach departs from many existing prediction models in that it explicitly consider traffic patterns during day time as well as week day. We can predict travel time accurately by considering both traffic condition of time range in a day and traffic patterns of vehicles in a week. We compare the proposed method with the existing prediction models like Link-based, Micro-T* and Switching model. It is also revealed that proposed method can reduce MARE (mean absolute relative error) significantly, compared with the existing predictors.
