  • As social and political paradigms change, public institution tasks and structures are constantly created, integrated, or abolished. From an effective record management perspective, it is necessary to review whether the previously established record classification schemes reflect these changes and remain relevant to current tasks. However, in most institutions, the restructuring process relies on manual labor and the experiential judgment of practitioners or institutional record managers, making it difficult to reflect changes in a timely manner or comprehensively understand the overall context. To address these issues and improve the efficiency of record management, this study proposes an approach using automation and intelligence technologies to restructure the classification schemes, ensuring records are filed within an appropriate context. Furthermore, the proposed approach was applied to the target institution, its results were used as the basis for interviews with the practitioners to verify the effectiveness and limitations of the approach. It is, aiming to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the restructured record classification schemes and promote the standardization of record management.

  • As the Internet becomes widespread as a significant tool of obtaining information, there is a growing demand for a system to efficiently organize and manage information on the Internet. Accordingly, research on the directory classification structure that directly affects the efficiency of a users information search is actively investigated in every field. The study intends to suggest an efficient classification structure by comparing and analyzing the directory classification structure of current design portal sites with the theory of literature classification structure, in order to increase the efficiency of search according to the directory classification structure of design sector.

  • It is appropriate and useful to interpret some product classification schemes as buyer behavior models; such classifications permit investigations of discrepancies between classification predictions and actual buyer behavior. We review existing product classifications and identify underlying behavioral assumptions of various classification schemes that have been used in the marketing discipline for more than nine decades. Recognizing the irrelevance of existing product classifications for current products, we propose a new reclassification framework by incorporating transparency concepts. Based on this extended product classification, we highlight the potential roles of product classification study as an important link between consumer research and marketing strategy, emphasizing behavioral implications.

  • There is a growing interest in user-centered classification or reader-interest classification, as questions have arisen from the meanings and the effects of traditional library classification. American public libraries have used fiction genre classification called bookstore model as an alternative to the traditional classification schemes. As a result, accessibility to the collection was promoted and library service for their users was improved. This study intends to make a comprehensive inquiry about the philosophical background and functional features of genre classification. To the end, literature survey and interviews or e-mails with librarians in American public libraries were conducted.

  • This study was conducted to improve the classification schemes of KDC in the fields of motion picture materials. Classification schemes of the KDC, DDC and LCC for motion picture materials were analyzed and compared. From the results, KDC was found to be the least suitable classification system to handle motion picture materials because it had very poorly detailed subdivisions of items and incomplete subsidiary tables to develop some subject items to represent various aspects of motion picture fields. Some suggestions to cover the deficiencies of KDC for motion picture fields were made in terms of 9 subdivisions and 53 sub-items. Particularly, new subdivisions of ‘types of genre', ’motion picture festival', 'worldwide motion pictures' and ’people related to motion pictures' were added.

  • Inductive learning and classification techniques have been employed in various research and applications that organize textual data to solve the problem of information access. In this study, we develop hybrid model combination methods which incorporate the concepts and techniques for multiple modeling algorithms to improve the accuracy of text classification, and conduct experiments to evaluate the performances of proposed schemes. Boosted stacking, one of the extended stacking schemes proposed in this study yields higher accuracy relative to the conventional model combination methods and single classifiers.

  • This study examines various weighting methods for improving the performance of automatic classification based on Rocchio algorithm on two collections(LISA, Reuters-21578). First, three factors for weighting are identified as document factor, document factor, category factor for each weighting schemes, the performance of each was investigated. Second, the performance of combined weighting methods between the single schemes were examined. As a result, for the single schemes based on each factor, category-factor-based schemes showed the best performance, document set-factor-based schemes the second, and document-factor-based schemes the worst. For the combined weighting schemes, the schemes(idf*cat) which combine document set factor with category factor show better performance than the combined schemes(tf*cat or ltf*cat) which combine document factor with category factor as well as the common schemes (tfidf or ltfidf) that combining document factor with document set factor. However, according to the results of comparing the single weighting schemes with combined weighting schemes in the view of the collections, while category-factor-based schemes(cat only) perform best on LISA, the combined schemes(idf*cat) which combine document set factor with category factor showed best performance on the Reuters-21578. Therefore for the practical application of the weighting methods, it needs careful consideration of the categories in a collection for automatic classification.

  • While the amount of information exchanged through internet has dramatically increased recently, certain inefficiencies still exist with regard to the storage, distribution, and retrieval of information. As a means of improving efficiency in accessing information, many search portals provide directory services to present organized guidance to information, based on the classification schemes. This study examines the classification activities practiced by the major search portals in Korea and makes some suggestions to improve the quality of directory services.

  • This study explores the relationships between knowledge and classification. Classification schemes have properties that show the representation of entities and relationships in structures that reflect knowledge being classified. Four representative classifying methods. i. e. hierarchies, trees, paradigms, and faceted analysis those brings new knowledge are analyzed and those strengths and weaknesses are described. Based upon the analysis, the links between knowledge and classification are verified. Finally a better way of representing knowledge structure through classification schemes in the future is suggested.

  • The Topic Maps paradigm allows people and organizations to integrate and merge heterogeneous products classification systems such as UNSPSC and HS. Merging their product ontologies could combine information about classification scheme for products. We analyzed two product classification schemes for UML modeling and developed an integrated TM for watches . Examples in XTM syntax show how UNSPSC and HS can be integrated by merging their ontology.
