  • Reconfigurable radio technology is needed to reconstruct frequency and modem functionality, which can be different in various regions. In addition, it makes a single mobile handset capable of supporting various standards of wireless communication and thus plays a key role in mobile convergence. An MMIC VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) has been developed for high power and wide bandwidth where Clapp-Gouriet type oscillators are adapted for series feedback, and was fabricated based on 0.15um pHEMT of TRW. The MMIC VCO was connected to an aluminar substrate on the carrier for testing. This MMIC VCO module showed good performance in comparison to existing works. Furthermore, it can be potentially extended to reconfigure an MMIC VCO for wireless systems such as military applications and satellite communications.

  • A small and integrated MMIC VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) at Ka-band has been developed. This oscillator was designed as Clapp-Gouriet type scheme, fabricated, and implemented on the carrier. This was connected to an alumna substrate on the carrier providing output port for module, utilizing ribbon and wire bonding technique allowing the loss of 0.2dB. This VCO module showed the excellent performance.

  • In this paper, with using the clapp type VCO(Voltage Controlled Osillator) configuration a wideband frequency synthesizer in UHF band is proposed. In order to design a wideband frequency synthesizer, the variation of phase in the negative resistance circuit as well as the load circuit was analyzed. Based on this result we propose a method to widen the operation range of the VCO. A frequency synthesizer using the proposed wideband VCO was designed and fabricated. It is shown that the synthesizer has the operating frequency range of 740~1,530 MHz by 0~5 V varactor tuning voltage, and it had the output power of 2~-6 dBm. Moreover, the phase noise measured as -77 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset, and as -108 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset from the oscillation frequency.
