Stress Analysis of a Clamp Chuck for Machining of a Ring Gear (링기어 절삭을 위한 클램프 척의 응력해석)

  • This study contains to theory and analysis research for the stress and the translation of an expand disk that fix a ring gear for tooth profile machining. The stress of the expand disk is analysed by the finite element method(FEM) to calculate design parameters. From the analysis results, the stress of the expand shows a linear tendency under various fixing force. This results show that the expand disk have a elastic characteristics as a disk spring. The maximum stress was observed on under side in split section of the expand disk. It is verified that the analysis results are useful to calculate design parameters of the expand disk.

Broken Mayfield Head Clamp

  • The Mayfield head clamp is the most frequently used head clamp system in the field of neurosurgery. In many cases, surgery is performed with complete reliance on the safety of the MHC. However, we experienced an extremely rare case in which the MHC accidentally broke while installing this system for immobilization of the head and neck. This is a case report with a brief review of the literature. The patient was a 58-year-old female who was scheduled to undergo cervical laminoplasty under the diagnosis of degenerative spondylotic cervical stenosis. In an attempt to install an MHC, we fixed three pins in the scalp; however, the arm of the MHC system broke when force was applied from both directions. Fortunately, the patient remained in a stable position and did not sustain an injury to the head or neck. Fixation was performed using another MHC, and the surgery was performed successfully. The patient was discharged after surgery with no specific complications related to the MHC system. The authors experienced an extremely rare case of MHC breakage during application and report the importance of properly managing and maintaining the instruments in order to prevent fatal injury.

The Effect of the Resistance of Wedge Frame on the Clamping Force of the Rail Clamp (쐐기프레임의 저항력이 레일클램프의 압착력에 미치는 영향)

  • The damping force of a jaw pad is determined by the displacements of main part when two lockers are locked, after the damping angle of a locker was set up in the wedge type rail damp for a container crane. In this time, of the resistance of wedge frame generates due to several factors, the damping angle of a locker to display the initial clamping force will be changed because of the reduction of displacement of extension bar. This resistance is determined by the eccentric distance between the roller and the wedge, and by the gap between the wedge frame and outer frame. In this study we measured the tensile force of both extension bar through the performance test of the prototype rail damp in order to evaluate the effect of the resistance of wedge frame on the damping force of the wedge type rail clamp.

The Quasi 3-D Flow Simulation in injection Molding Using Virtual Pressure Reflection (가상 반사압력을 이용한 사출성형의 준3차원 유동해석)

  • In order to determine the design parameters and processing conditions in injection molding, it is very important to establish the theoretical model with scientific base. In this study, a two dimensional model has been developed for the purpose and flow simulations of filling process are carried out. The moving boundary transient flow problem along the flat plane is solved efficiently by the Iterative Boundary Pressure Reflection Method which rearranges the impinged melt front along the physical boundary in scientific manner. The two dimensional modeling of filling process is applied to two examples : a three dimensional cover with two screw holes and a two-gated flat cavity with unbalanced runners. The numerical results show good agreement with experimental short shots, especially for the weldline locations and the pressure traces at various locations. They also provide the temperature, clamp force, and velocity field in the mold at different times during filling of cavity.

Development of a New Inchworm Actuation System U sing Piezoelectric Shearing Actuators (전단압전가진기를 이용한 인치웜 가진시스템의 개발)

  • This paper presents the development of a new inchworm actuation system using the shearing deformation of the piezoelectric actuators. In this new actuation system, piezoelectric shearing/expanding actuators, an inertial mass and an advanced preload system are configured innovatively to generate the motion of an inertial mass. There are two modes in the new actuation system: (1) stick mode, and (2) clamp mode. In stick mode, the deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators drives an inertial mass by means of the friction force at their contact interface. On the other hand, in clamp mode, the piezoelectric expanding actuators provide the gripping force to an inertial mass and, as a result, eliminate its backward motion following the rapid backward deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed new actuation system, the experimental system is built up, and the static performance evaluation and dynamic analysis are conducted. The open-loop performance of the linear motion of the proposed new actuation system is evaluated. In dynamic analysis, the mathematical model for the contact interface is established based on the LuGre friction model and the equivalent parameters are identified.

A Piezoelectric Lens Actuator for Mobile Information Devices (모바일 기기용 렌즈 구동 압전형 액츄에이터 개발)

  • In this paper, a lens actuator for mobile devices is proposed using stack type piezoelectric materials. In general, the deformation of PZT actuators is not enough for lens motion when the allowed voltage is applied. The small stroke problem can be solved by accumulating a lot of small displacements in high frequency. In this paper, a new inch-worm type model for focusing actuator is suggested based on the interaction of inertial and frictional forces. Theoretical analysis and simulation using ANSYS are performed to verify the feasibility of the inch-worm PZT actuator model. Various types of clamps are considered to determine the effect of frictional force on the motion, and appropriate clamp-actuator models are proposed. The proposed models are experimentally verified and the experimental results show high correspondence with theoretical and simulated values. The inch-worm type focusing actuator enable a large stroke with 7.79 mm/sec with 10kHz and 10V.

Experimental assessment of the piezoelectric transverse d15 shear sensing mechanism

  • The piezoelectric transverse $d_{15}$ shear sensing mechanism is firstly assessed experimentally for a cantilever smart sandwich plate made of a piezoceramic axially poled patched core and glass fiber reinforced polymer composite faces. Different electrical connections are tested for the assessment of the sensor performance under a varying amplitude harmonic (at 24 Hz) force. Also, the dynamic response of the smart sandwich composite structure is monitored using different acquisition devices. The obtained experimentally sensed voltages are compared to those resulting from the benchmark three-dimensional piezoelectric coupled finite element simulations using a commercial code where realistic features, like equipotential conditions on the patches' electrodes and mechanical updating of the clamp, are considered. Numerically, it is found that the stiffness of the clamp, which is much softer than the ideal one, has an enormous influence on the sensed voltage of its adjacent patch; therefore, sensing with the patch on the free side would be more advantageous for a cantilever configuration. Apart from confirming the latter result, the plate benchmark experimental assessment showed that the parallel connection of its two oppositely poled patches has a moderate performance but better than the clamp side patch acting as an individual sensor.

  • In the electrical railway, for the improvement of a train speed, it is necessary to study not only the dynamic behaviors of overhead catenary system but the fatigue behaviors of components for a safety assurance according to the increase of vibration level. One of the critical components in the system is a dropper. Therefore, the dynamic force acting on a dropper was measured in the Chungbuk Line and analyzed to figure out the dynamic characteristics the dropper. And in order to assure the safety of dropper clamp and cable, we proposed a test facility as well as test method based on the test results For the further study, we will measure the dynamic forces in the conventional line and high-speed line and make up the test condition, so that the safety of dropper clamps can be assured.

  • The rail clamp is the device to prevent that a crane slips along rails due to the wind blast as well as locate the crane in the set position for loading and unloading containers. The wedge type rail clamp should be designed to consider the structural stability and the durability because it compresses both rail side with large clamping force by the wedge working as the wind speed increases. In this research, the kriging interpolation method using sequential sampling is utilized to find the optimum shape of the jaw in the rail clamp. The suggested method predicts more accurate response value than the response surface method. The optimum results obtained by the proposal method are compared with those by the commercial software.

  • The vertical forces in rail fasteners at areas of bridge transitions near the embankment and on the pier will occur due to different deformations of adjoining bridges caused by the trainloads. The up-lifting forces is not large problem in the blast track because the elasticity of blast and rail pad buffs up-lifting effect. But, it is likely to be difficult to ensure the serviceability of the railway and the safety of the fastener in the end in that concrete slab track consist of rail, fastener, and track in a single body, delivering directly the up-lifting force to the fastener if the deck is bended because of the end rotation of the overhang due to the vertical load. When the up-lifting force exceeds the clamp force of the fastener clip, the rail pad is out of fastener, which makes decrease the serviceability of the railway, such as noise and vibration. Furthermore, it is possible to reduce the safety of the track as the longitudinal resistance. This study is focused on guideline suggestion to decrease up-lifting force in the fastener adjacent to the civil joint of slab track of bridge throughout the parametric analysis between the vertical spring stiffness of the fastener as the material approach, the space of fastener adjacent to bridge transition, the rigidity of the girder as the geometrical approach and up-lifting force under the train load.
