  • Aim: In this study we aimed to investigate the healthy life-style behaviour of Turkish women and establish influencing features. Methods: This descriptive study performed by a questionnaire method was conducted in a primary health care centre, in an urban region in Kayseri, Turkey. Every midwife region belonging to the health care centre was accepted as a cluster, and a sample of 450 women between ages 18-64, was gathered from 9 midwife regions. The Health Promotion Life-style Profile (HPLP) was applied to evaluated the healthy lifestyle behaviour of 421 women that could be reached. T test, Tukey HSD with ANOVA, and chi square tests were used for analysis. Results: The mean total HPLP was $126.8{\pm}19.2$ (interpersonal support subscale, $74.3{\pm}14.1$; nutrition subscale, $73.6{\pm}12.6$; self-actualisation subscale, $70.6{\pm}11.9$; stress management subscale, $63.4{\pm}13.0$; health responsibility subscale, $61.2{\pm}13.2$; and exercise subscale, $47.1{\pm}15.0$). There was no statistically significant variation when evaluated for age, marital state, family type, economic status, and perception of self-health, smoking, and BMI. HPLP was high in people with an education of primary school and lower in university graduates, in people who lived mostly in the city centre and in individuals with chronic diseases. In conclusion, it was established that the health promoting behaviour in Turkish women is, in general, at a medium level, and women should be enlightened in order to develop and increase the habit of health preservation and promotion.

  • An outbreak of Staphylococcus aureus infections occurred in a university with an enrollment of 80 students in the city of Daejon, Republic of Korea. All nine S. aureus isolates from patients (n = 7), staff members (n = 1), and the fried chicken served as the lunch (n = 1) harbored the enterotoxin A gene and showed an identical antibioticresistant profile, PFGE banding pattern (STAS16.001), and sequence type, ST 6. These results suggested that the outbreak was associated with eating the fried chicken that had been handled by an infected staff member. This case report demonstrated a practical approach to identifying the source and transmission of an infection.

  • This study was conducted to assess the distribution of coronary risk factors(CRF) and evaluate the risk profile of coronary heart disease by the clustering of the CRF in health checkup examinees. The study sample consists of 3,345 adults aged 30s-60s years(1,917 males, 1,428 females), not recognized as taking medicines for or having cardiovascular diseases, who underwent health package check-up at the health examination center of a university-affliated hospital in Daejon City. The proportion of subjects with 1, 2, 3, 4 and or more risk factors were 27.6%, 26.5%, 16.9% and 9.1%, respectively, therefore, the 80.0% of total subjects had at least one more risk factor. From these findings, this study concluded that the prevalence rates of CRF were relatively high. These data provide further evidence that the early intervention for coronary health prevention and promotion in general adult population is necessary at the population level.

  • At the present study, it was aimed to explore the molecular genetic characterization of multiple antimicrobial resistant Salmonella spp. isolates from pigs and cattle. A total of 138 Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) isolates were typed with phage, among them, 83.3% of S. Typhimurium tested could divide into a 10 phage types. Definitive type 193 (DT193) (25.4%) and DT195 (24.6%) were exhibited as the dominant types. DT104 and U302 were found from pigs and cattle. On the other hand, S. Enteritidis had 6 phage types, of them, phage type 21 (PT21) and PT11b were the popular types. In the plasmid profiles, 135 of S. Typhimurium isolates were exhibited 1 to 6 plasmid bands which molecular weight ranged from 90 to 2kb. 35 isolates (25.4%) harbored a 90kb plasmid which is thought to be the serotype specific virulence plasmid. Two of twenty five S. Enteritidis had common plasmids at 2 and 1.5kb. With multiplex polymerase chain reaction, virulence genes (invA and spvC) were detected from all Salmonella spp. from 167 of S. Typhimurium, S. Enteritidis and chloramphenicol resistant S. Schwarzengrund, but some drug resistant genes, such as PSE-1, cml/tetR and flo were not determined but other drug resistant genes, for example TEM and int were found. The detection rates of spvC, TEM and int gene was 35.3%, 29.3% and 72.5%, respectively. The TEM gene was highly popular in S. Typhimurium, which was detected from ampicillin and amoxicillin resistant strains as 95.9%. int gene was able to detect from all the isolates identified as multidrug resistsnt (MDR), particularly DT193 was thought as the most prevalent virulence and multidrug resistance isolate. The major plasmid profile and drug resistance pattern of DT193 were 90, 40, 10.5, 6.3, 3.0kb and ACCbDNaPSSuT, respectively. MDR was commonly found in other phage types, particularly DT104, U302 and DT203.

  • This descriptive correlational study was conducted to identify the variables related to a health promoting lifestyle in high school students. 304 high school students and 189 vocational high school students living in Taegu city were selected by a convenience sampling method. The data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from August 24 to September 4, 1998. Pender and others' Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile, Shere et al's. Self-Efficacy scale, Wallston et al.'s Internal Health Locus of Control scale, Wares' Health self rating scale and Cohen & Hoberman's Social support scale were used. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, MANOVA, ANOVA. Tukey verification and Stepwise multiple regression with an SAS program. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The average score of a health promoting lifestyle performance was 2.38(SD=.36) of a 4 point scale .Self-actualization (mean = 2.80. SD = .60). interpersonal support(mean = 2.73, SD=.47), health responsibility (mean=1.53, SD=.47), nutrition(mean=2.64, SD=.63), exercise(mean=2.71. SD=.72) and stress management(mean=2.37, SD=.58) were also analyzed. 2. The combination of self-efficacy, social-support, internal health locus of control. father's educational level and perceived health status explained 37.97% of the variance in health promoting lifestyles. 3. A Health promoting lifestyle showed significant positive correlations with self efficacy(r=.5173. p=.0011), perceived health status(r=.254, p=.001) and internal health locus of control(r=.321. p=.001). 4. According to sex(t=7.38. p=.006). economic state(F=6.62, p=.00l), Father's educational level(F=4.25, p=.005), mother's educational level(F=6.94. p=.000l), the grade of educational performance(F=3.74, p=.024), sleeping hours(F=3.47. p=.032) and social support(F=40.76, p=.0001). there were significant differences and modifying factors in health promoting lifestyles. On the basis of the above findings. self-efficacy in cognitive factors, and social support in modifying factors were identified as the variables which explained most of Pender's health-promotion model. Nursing strategies enhancing self-efficacy and social support which have a more significant effect on health promoting lifestyles should be developed. Further research is required to find out the factors influencing health pormoting lifestyle of high school students.

  • This study is a descriptive research to identify lifestyle for health promotion, health condition, and degree of life satisfaction based on Korean elderly's physical constitution. The interviewee of this research was 53 outpatients of Oriental herbal medicine hospitals who are the residents either in Seoul or Taegu city. The data collection was performed during the March to the November of 1999. The research tools used for the measurement of the lifestyle for health promotion was "The Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile" developed by Walker, Sechrist and Pender. Measurement of the health condition was carried out using CMI(Cornell Medical Index) developed by Brodman, Erdmann, Lorge and Wolff. The Index for degree of the life satisfaction of elderly developed by Yun Jin was utilized to measure the degree of life satisfaction. Data analysis was performed using SPSSWin 9.0 software. In some cases, frequency, percentile, t-test, ANOVA or Pearson Correlation was also used to meet the specific research purposes when necessary. Tukey test was done for the post test. The conclusions are as follows. 1) The ANOVA test showed a significant difference in the lifestyle for the health promotion depending on physical constitutions of the interviewee. According to the Tukey test, 태음인 ($103.67{\pm}16.81$) performed better lifestyle for the health promotion than SOEMIN(少陰人, $85.34{\pm}12.69$) and 소양인($88.47{\pm}16.81$) (F=6.72, p=.003). 2) The result of the Pearson Correlation showed a positive correlation between the lifestyle for health promotion and health condition. As a result, the group practicing lifestyle for health promotion maintained a good health condition. Result of the Pearson Correlation also showed a proportional correlation between the lifestyle for health promotion and life satisfaction. Accordingly, the group practicing lifestyle for health promotion maintained a high degree of life satisfaction. Finally, the result of the Pearson Correlation showed a proportional correlation between the health condition and the degree of life satisfaction. Consequently, the group in a good health condition showed the high degree of life satisfaction.
