  • In this paper, we present the analysis of the fact that normalization and types of citation fields have an effect to the citation matching. Citation matching indicates the series of grouping process for the citation records referring to the same paper. The citation matching combines the comparison results of citation fields, and determines which citation records are the same. For the citation field comparison in the citation matching phase, studies on the normalization and types of citation fields are needed. But they are relatively insufficient when compared with the studies on citation matching methods. In this research, we showed that the citation matching performance was affected by the normalization and types of citation fields. Additionally, we also analyzed the combination of normalized multiple fields. According to the experimental result, the citation field had the overall performance improvement through a normalization, and the performance mode differently showed up at the citation field type.

  • This research uses a new approach to analyze the extent of influence journal papers have on the progress of varied research fields by estimation of subject-based influence on research other than impact factor that relies on citation index. It is initiated with the hypothesis that earlier established citation relations between journal and citing paper, which reveals the research field that contains the highest citation index and hence has received the greatest contribution from a particular journal, would have inconsistent contribution to the research field over the year of journal publication. The target research is primarily 128 journal papers and 4,123 citing papers from Information Systems Research published in the years 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010. The characteristics of citation history and hallmarks of research field of citing papers were studied and analysis on significant distinction between citing fields based on the year of publication was performed. The analysis results show the order of citation rate to be highest from Computer Science (2,221 cases), Business & Economics (2,191 cases), and Information Science & Library Science (1,901 cases). The citation history of the journal, nonetheless, indicates increase in citation during 2-3 years after the earliest publication till it achieves constant citation. The statistical analysis shows significant variation in citing fields in accordance with the publication year; especially in 2010, journal contribution has increased in the fields of Business & Economics, Operations Research & Management Science, and Health Care Sciences & Services but, however, is reduced in Education & Educational Research and Social Sciences - Other Topics.

  • The study investigated the intellectual structure of the library and information science field by journal co-citation analysis on thirty LIS journals with high journal impact factors. Patterns of journal-to-journal citation show the structure of journals in the field, visualized by a networked map of the journals. The result shows journals that can be considered as the core group and as the peripheral group, which corresponds to other studies for investigating the field's intellectual structure using other techniques, such as cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling.

  • Citation matching (CM) is a method for clustering citation records that refer to the same paper. Normally, CM is preceded by citation field segmentation (CFS) which divides a citation record into its fields such as author(s), a title, a title of publication, year, etc. Although many studies have attacked CFS and CM, the relationship between CFS and CM was not sufficiently explored. Among many aspects of the effect of CFS on CM, this study concentrates on what citation fields should identify for CM. As its first attempt, we compared CM performances over different sets of citation fields manually segmented, and confirmed that the use of more citation fields help CM to cluster citation records better.

  • Recently, deep learning has been rapidly spreading as an innovative machine learning technique in various domains. This study explored the research trends of deep learning via modified ego centered topic citation analysis. To do that, a few seed documents were selected from among the retrieved documents with the keyword 'deep learning' from Web of Science, and the related documents were obtained through citation relations. Those papers citing seed documents were set as ego documents reflecting current research in the field of deep learning. Preliminary studies cited frequently in the ego documents were set as the citation identity documents that represents the specific themes in the field of deep learning. For ego documents which are the result of current research activities, some quantitative analysis methods including co-authorship network analysis were performed to identify major countries and research institutes. For the citation identity documents, co-citation analysis was conducted, and key literatures and key research themes were identified by investigating the citation image keywords, which are major keywords those citing the citation identity document clusters. Finally, we proposed and measured the citation growth index which reflects the growth trend of the citation influence on a specific topic, and showed the changes in the leading research themes in the field of deep learning.

  • This study comparatively investigated citation behavior of articles by researchers in the field of mechanical engineering in Korea and Japan. For the study 7, 515 citations from 202 articles covered in KSME, 243 articles covered in JSME, and 129 articles indexed in SCI are analysed. It identified the general citation behavior, the difference with citation behavior by publication place, low use of grey literature and Korean publications by Korean researchers, and the difference with citation behavior between Korean and Japan researchers.

  • Research in interdisciplinary fields like biomechanics is published in a variety of journals whose visibility depends on bibliometric indexing that is often driven by citation analysis of bibliometric databases. This study documented variation in publication metrics and research subject categories assigned to 14 biomechanics journals. Authors, citation, and citation rate (CR) were collected for the top 15 cited articles in the journals retrieved from the Google Scholar service. Research subject categories were also extracted for journals from three databases (Dimensions, Journal Citation Reports, and Scopus). Despite the focus on biomechanics for the journals studied, these biomechanics journals have widely varying CR and subject categories assigned to them. There were significant (p=0.001) and meaningful (77-108%) differences in median CR between average, low, and high CR groups of these biomechanics journals. Since CR are primary data used to calculate most journal metrics and there is no one biomechanics subject category, field normalization for journal citation metrics in biomechanics is difficult. Care must be taken to accurately interpret most citation metrics of biomechanics journals as biased proxies of general usage of research, given a specific database, time frame, and area of biomechanics research.

  • This study attempted to explore the characteristics of knowledge communication and investigate important research topics and key authors by analyzing major academic papers in the field of LIS in Korea for five years from 2018 to 2022. The research method collected and analyzed papers published for five years in four key journals in the field of domestic Library and Information Science from the Korean Citation Index (KCI) database. The paper was selected to extract the author data of the paper and the data of the reference, and network visualization was performed by conducting literature co-citation analysis and author co-citation analysis using Netminer. As a result of the analysis, it was possible to derive a pair of co-citations between authors, and it was confirmed that it is important to include multiple authors in the intellectual structure analysis in the academic field through co-citation frequency analysis among researchers. The literature confirmed the correlation between the topics of the paper, and it was found that research related to Library and Information Science was centered on the topics of library, digital, user, service, and data.
