  • The free vibration analysis and design optimization of the rotating composite cylindrical shells with a rectangular cutout are investigated by theoretical method. The Love's thin shell theory is used to derive the frequency equation. The theoretical results are obtained by application of the energy method employing the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure. The used circumferential vibration modes are trigonometric functions, the axial modes are the beam modal functions chosen to satisfy the prescribed boundary conditions. To check the validity, the theoretical results are compared with experimental, FEM and other theoretical results.

  • This paper experimentally deals with the vibration characteristics of flat ring transducers used for ultrasonic sensors and actuators. Radial vibration mode, which is the fundamental mode of a thin piezoelectric transducer, was measured by a laser in-plane vibrometer. An impedance analyzer was used to measure natural frequencies. The results measured by experiments verified theoretical predictions. The vibration characteristics of ring transducers were identified according to the outer diameter size. The shape of the fundamental mode is almost uniform but slightly decreases from the inner to the outer circumferential surfaces. The natural frequency of the fundamental mode decreases as the outer diameter increases. It appears that the ring type transducer is suitable to excite uniformly distributed vibration on a flat surface.

  • Free vibration characteristics of an initially stressed CD/DVD disk, which is designed for increasing critical speeds of current optical disks, are analyzed using the Rayleigh-Ritz technique based on variational formulations. Natural frequencies of the new disk depend on membrane stresses caused by disk rotation as well as residual stresses imposed during the cooling process of the injection molding. Critical speeds are calculated for the various initial patterns of radial and circumferential stresses. Initially imposed tensile stresses increase the natural frequencies of all the vibration modes except zero nodal diameter mode, whose natural frequency is independent of circumferential stress. A new disk with initial tensile stress of 0.5MPa is shown to have its critical speed about 30 % higher than the current optical disk.

  • The vibrational characteristics of Langevin-type piezoelectric torsional transducers have been studied theoretically and experimentally in this paper. The differential equations of piezoelectric torsional motion have been derived in terms of the circumferential displacement and the electric potential. Solutions of the boundary-value problem have yielded the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the transducers. The theoretical solutions have been verified by comparing the numerical results with experimental ones.

  • This study proposes a method of an equivalent bell model in order to tune the beat period of a Korean bell. In a Korean bell having a slight asymmetry, each circumferential mode splits into a mode pair which has a slight difference in frequency, and the interaction of the mode pair makes a beat in vibration and sound. An equivalent bell model which consists of an axi-symmetric bell and an equivalent point mass, has the same mode property as in a real bell. The equivalent bell model is constructed by the finite element analysis based upon the theory of a revolutionary shell Using the equivalent bell model, the beat period is predicted when the bell thickness is locally decreased to improve the beat property. The predicted result is verified by experiment on a test bell. The proposed method is useful to save the time required for tuning the beat period of a large bell.

  • The study on the vibration characteristics of annular sector plates is important for structural engineers. In this study the vibration modes and their natural frequencies of annular sector plates clamped along the inner circumferential edge are obtained by the time average holographic interferometer according to the varying sector angle. The experimental results agree well with those obtained by the numerical analysis. The vibration characteristics of annular sector plates shows great dependence on the sector angle. The radial nodal lines converge to the center of annular sector plate.

  • This paper investigates the vibration characteristics of steam generator (SG) U-tubes with defect. The operating SG shell-side flow field conditions for determining the fluidelastic instability parameters such as added mass are obtained from three-dimensional SG flow calculation. Modal analyses are performed for the U-tubes either with axial or circumferential flaw with different sizes. Special emphases are on the effects of flaw orientation and size on the modal and instability characteristics of tubes, which are expressed in terms of the natural frequency, corresponding mode shape and stability ratio. Also, addressed is the effect of the internal pressure on the vibration characteristics of the tube.

  • The cylindrical shells are used as primary components of complex structures such as airplane fuselages and nuclear pressure vessels. Recently the free vibration analysis of these structures are investigated by many researchers. The engineering informations on experimental validation of the free vibration behavior on the simply supported cylindrical shells are very few. The experimental methods for realizing the physical boundary condition of simply supported edges are examined. Natural frequencies and mode shapes of the isotropic and plain weave composite simply supported shells are obtained by modal tests. A theoretical and finite element analysis are also performed in order to validate the experimental results. The experimental results indicate that the simply supported boundary conditions with bolts along the circumferential direction of shell in both ends are well achieved. Those are shown to agree with the analytical results and with the finite element analysis results. These methods can be used to realize other experimental simple support boundary conditions.

  • Non-destructive inspection techniques using laser have been broading their application areas as well as growing their measurement skills together with the rapid development of circumferential technology like fiber optics and computer. The remarkable inspection technique using laser speckle, so-called ESPI is aleady on the stage of on-line testing with commercial products in other nations. Especially, this technique is expected to be applied to the nuclear industry. Because it is proper for the vibration measurement and it can be applied to objects of a high temperature. This paper describes the use of the ESPI system for measuring vibration patterns on the reflecting objects. Using this system, high-quality Jo fringers fso that fringe shift algorthms can be used to determine vibration interferograms recorded by the ESPI system.

  • The free vibration characteristics of the triple cylindrical shells filled with fluid are investigated. The triple cylindrical shells are filled with compressible fluid. The boundary condition is clamped at both ends. Analytical method is developed to evaluate natural frequencies of triple cylindrical shells using Sanders' shell theory and courier series expansion by Stokes' transformation. Their results are compared with those of finite element method to verify the validation of the method developed. The modal characteristics of shells filled with fluid at region 1, 2 and 3 are evaluated.
