  • The ocean is the largest reservoir of carbon in the climate system. Atmospheric $CO_2$ is efficiently transferred to the deep ocean by a process called the biological carbon pump: photosynthetic fixation of $CO_2$ at the sea surface and remineralization of sinking organic carbon at depths are main causes for the vertical contrast of carbon in the ocean. The sequestered carbon to the deep ocean returns to the sea surface by ocean circulation. Part of the upwelled $CO_2$ leaks into the atmosphere through air-sea gas exchange. It has been suggested that the air-sea partitioning of carbon has varied in concert with the glacial-interglacial climate variations, due partly to changes in ocean circulation. In this review paper, we briefly summarize key concepts of the oceanic carbon pump. We also discuss the response of the air-sea carbon partitioning to change in ocean circulation in the context of the glacial-interglacial climate change.

  • High temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable requires forced sub-cooled LN2 flow cooling. Liquid nitrogen is circulated by a pump and cooled back by cooling system. Typical operating temperature range is expected to be between 65 K and 77 K. The HTS power cable needs sufficient cooling to overcome its low temperature heat load. For successful cooling, the hydraulic characteristics of the HTS power cable must be well investigated to design the cables. Especially, the pressure drop in the cable is an important design parameter, because the pressure drop decides the length of the cable, size of the coolant circulation pump and circulation pressure, etc. This paper describes measurement and investigation of the pressure drop of the cooling system. In order to reduce the total pressure drop of the cooling system, the flow rate of liquid nitrogen must be controlled by rotational speed of the circulation pump.

  • The Boil-Off-Gases(BOG) in the LNG production terminal are continuously generated during the unloading, storage and supply processes by the heat penetration. In order to use these gases as useful fuel, the reliquefaction process should be installed to put the reliquefied BOG in the main LNG supply line before the secondary pump in terminal. The current reliquefaction method of BOG in LNG terminal is the direct contact one between LNG and BOG in the absorption column. But the system has severe disadvantage, which is the 10 times of LNG circulation needed for unit mass of BOG reliquefaction. It causes, therefore, high power consumption of LNG circulation pump and excessive city-gas supply, even if short demand of NG is needed in the summer time. In this paper, the new reliquefaction system of BOG by using LNG cold energy with indirect contact in precooler was suggested and analysed. The result showed new indirect contact method of BOG reliquefaction system between LNG cold energy and BOG is much more effective than the current direct contact one because of only about 1.3 times of LNG circulation needed and higher energy saving by pump power reduction.

  • The ground source heat pump (GSHP) system has attracted attention, because of its stability of heat production, and the high efficiency of the system. However, there are few studies on the prediction method of the heat exchange rate for a horizontal GSHP system. In this research, in order to predict the performance of a horizontal GSHP system, coupled simulation with a ground heat transfer model and a heat exchanger circulation model was developed, and calculation of heat exchange rate was conducted by the developed tool. In order to optimally design the horizontal GSHP system, the flow rate of circulation water, and the depth and buried spaces of heat exchangers were considered by the case study. As a result, the temperature of circulation water and the heat exchange rate of the system were calculated in each case.

  • The CANDU 9 shield cooling system was designed and layout with the objective of promoting natural circulation on loss of forced flow. In the present study, the shield cooling natural circulation was analyzed using verified the thermal-hydraulic code when the coolant pump or the heat exchanger was lost. This study showed that thermosyphoning cooled the end shields and prevented the end shields and the reserve water tank from boiling for at least 8 hours on loss of the shield cooling pumps but the heat exchangers still operational. With the loss of both pumps and heat exchangers, the end shields remain subcooled for up to 4 hours. To enhance thermosyphoning, the bypass connection to the line from the reserve water tank should be relocated to a point as low as possible.

  • In the present work, a new freeze protection method has been proposed for a natural circulation system of solar water heater. Though electrothermal wire is popularly used for the purpose, there are freezing troubles by wire cut-off and excessive electric power consumption. In the experimental device, hot water in a storage tank was circulated by a small pump and used to heat the outdoor pipes if the cold water pipe surface temperature falls lower than a set point. As a result, It was observed that there was no hot water waste while the solar water heating system operated without freeze and burst.

  • Influences on organ function were studied in animals during prolonged extracorporeal circulation with a bubble type of oxygenator. More than six hours of total cardiopulmonary bypass was performed under mild hypothermia by means of an extracorporeal circulation system in five dogs. Obtained results were summarized as follows. 1. The renal function was not so impaired seriously until four hours of extracorporeal circulation. However, there was more serious impairment of renal function in this study when extracorporeal circulation was carried out for a period of five hours or more. 2. There was gradual hepatic damage during extracorporeal circulation and the damage was more significant after bypass for a period of five to six hours. 3. There was a significant decrease in serum K during bypass, irrespective of the pump oxygenator prime with a high K solution. The reason for this is complex and due to many factors, however, it was evidently related to serum glucose levels during extracorporal circulation.

  • Hydraulic performance and flow resistance tests were performed to confirm the main parameters of the hydraulic instrumentation that can affect the pump performance of the reactor coolant pump. The flow resistance test offers important experimental data, which are necessary to predict the behavior of the primary coolant when the circulation of the reactor coolant pump is stopped. Moreover, the shape of the hydraulic section of the pump, which was considered in the test, was prepared to compare the mixed-flow- and axial-flow-type models, the difference in the number of blades of the impeller and diffuser, the difference in the shape of the impeller blade and its thickness, and the effect of coating at the suction bell. Additionally, five models of the hydraulic part were manufactured for the experiments. In this study, the differences in performance owing to the design factors were confirmed through the experimental results.

  • Experiments were carried out to study the operation characteristics of a regenerator with a thermo-syphon pump and a surface-flame burner for a lithium bromide (LiBr)-water absorption heat pump. A cylindrical-shape metal-fiber burner and commercial grade propane were used. The emission of carbon monoxide and nitric oxide was measured by a combustion gas analyzer. Ther regeneration rate of water vapor as a refrigerant was measured. It could be as a reference value showing the performance of the regenerator. The circulation rate of the LiBr-water solution was also measured from both the tanks for the weak-and the strong-solution. Using a refractometer, the LiBr concetration in the solution was calculated from the measured refractory index of the solution. Temperature of the solution and the condensed water was recorded at several points in the experimental apparatus with thermocouples, using a personal computer. This data collecting system for measuring temperature was calibrated with a set of standard thermometers. The generating rate of water vapor as refrigerant increased linearly with heat supplied. It was about 4.0g/s with the heat supplied at a rate of 16,500kcal/h. The circulation rate of LiBr solution also increases with the heat supplied. The difference in LiBr concentrations between the weak and the strong solution was in the range of 1 to 5% when the concentration of the strong solution was about 60%. It was dependent upon both the heat supplied and the circulation rate of the solution. The initial concentration and the level of the LiBr solution in the regenerator were measured and recorded before experiments. The effect of them on the generating rate of water vapor and the circulation rate of the solution was also studied. The generating rate of water vapor was not strongly dependent upon both the level of the LiBr solution and the initial LiBr concentration. However, the concentration difference of the solution increases with the initial level of the LiBr solution.

  • While greenhouses have been utilized as a sustainable alternative to traditional soil farming, they are often powered by diesel boilers that necessitate vast amounts of non-renewable energy and emit toxic fumes. Thus, geothermal heat pumps have been proposed as a more energy-efficient substitution for diesel boilers. Currently, most horticultural facilities in the United States use shallow geothermal systems, and are often equipped with horizontal underground heat exchangers as well as heat pump equipment. These shallow geothermal systems require a large drilling site and heat pump to function, which results in high maintenance costs. The heat pump itself consumes a large amount of power, which degrades system performance. Conversely, high temperatures can be attained within a single borehole in deep geothermal vertical closing systems without using a heat pump. This setup can dramatically reduce the power consumption and improve system performance. In this study, we have modeled a circulation simulator after the circulation systems in deep geothermal facilities to analyze a 2000-meter borehole in Naju-Sanpo-myeon. The simulator is operated by manipulating various putative parameters affecting system performance to analyze the system's coefficient of performance.
