The vibrations of bodies subjected to fluid flow can cause modifications in the flow conditions, giving rise to interaction forces that depend primarily on displacements and velocities of the body in question. In this paper the linearized equations of motion for bodies of arbitrary prismatic or cylindrical cross-section in two-dimensional cross-flow are presented, considering the three degrees of freedom of the body cross-section. By restraining the rotational motion, equations applicable to circular tubes, pipes or cables are obtained. These equations can be used to determine stability limits for such structural systems when subjected to non uniform cross-flow, or to evaluate, under the quasi static assumption, their response to vortex or turbulent excitation. As a simple illustration, the stability of a pipe subjected to a bidimensional flow in the direction normal to the pipe axis is examined. It is shown that the approach is extremely powerful, allowing the evaluation of fluid-structure interaction in unidimensional structural systems, such as straight or curved pipes, cables, etc, by means of either a combined experimental-numerical scheme or through purely numerical methods.
Exact optical characterization of virtual and augmented reality devices using conventional luminance measuring methods is a time-consuming process. A new measurement method is proposed to estimate in a relatively short time the boundary of ray trajectories emitting from a specific position on a virtual images. It is assumed that the virtual image can be modeled to be formed in front of one's eyes and seen through some optical aperture (field stop) that limits the field of view. Circular and rectangular shaped virtual images were investigated. From the estimated ray boundary, optical characteristics, such as the viewing direction and three dimensional range inside which a eye can observe the specified positions of the virtual image, were derived. The proposed method can provide useful data for avoiding the unnecessary measurements required for the previously reported method. Therefore, this method can be complementary to the previously reported method for reducing the whole measurement time of optical characteristics.
A novel analytical method based on the cavity mode theory to design a metasurface (MS) is proposed in this study. We carefully analyzed the phase and amplitude characteristics of the incident wave and transmitted wave, and successfully designed a circular polarization conversion MS by introducing a cutting structure with wider operation bandwidth and higher radiation direction gain compared with that of the original MS. For the measurements, a microstrip antenna operating at 2.4 GHz was used as the source antenna to verify the designed MS. The simulation and measurement results agree well with each other.

Turbulent convective heat transfer phenomenon which occur around the evaporator section of heat pump were analyzed experimentally. For this purpose a special wind tunnel and a heat pump system were designed and fabricated. Evaporator section was installed perpendicular to air flow direction and part of the evaporator was made of a glass tube for visual observation. The velocity distribution, turbulent intensity and temperature distribution were measured by hot wire technique and thermocouples. An experimental correlation for the convective heat transfer coefficient was obtained and the result is somewhat higher than the value calculated from Hilpert equation. The difference in two equations is believed to be due to the boning effect inside the evaporator tube.

In contrast to conventional liquid phase epitaxy of GaAs, surface kinetics limited growth is predominant in selective liquid phase epitaxy. For the stripe openings in the high-index crystal-lographic directions, the well-known facet formations and the decompositions into the low index planes or smooth circular surfaces are observed depending on the growth kinetics. For the low index direction stripe, surface kinetics limited growth is evident. By a numerical calcualtion we show that these phenomena are due to the enhanced masstransport by two dimensional diffusion and growth rate anisotropy which is found to be very stdrong with cusped minima for some singular planes in the solution growth as well as in vapor phase epitaxy. Morphological stability is briefly treated in terms of diffusion and its implications on device application are stated. Tese phenomena may be common to III-V compound semiconductors as well as GaAs.
We suggest a turning gait planning of a quadruped walking robot with an articulated spine. Robot developer has tried to implement a gait more similar to that of natural animals with high stability margin. Therefore, so many types of walking robot with reasonable gait have been developed. But there is a big difference with a natural animal walking motion. A key point is the fact that natural animals use their waist-oint(articulated spine) to walk. For example, a crocodile which has short legs relative to a long body uses their waist to walk more quickly and to turn more effectively. The other animals such as tiger, dog and so forth, also use their waist. Therefore, this paper proposes discontinuous turning gait planning for a newly modeled quadruped walking robot with an articulated spine which connects the front and rear parts of the body. Turning gait is very important as same as straight gait. All animals need a turning gait to avoid obstacle or to change walking direction. Turning gait has mainly two types of gaits; circular gait and spinning gait. We apply articulated spine to above two gaits, which shows the majority of an articulated spine more effectively. Firstly, we describe a kinematic relation of a waist-joint, the hip, and the center of gravity of body, and then apply a spinning gait. Next, we apply a waist-joint to a circular gait. We compare a gait stability margin with that of a conventional single rigid body walking robot. Finally, we show the validity of a proposed gait with simulation.

In this paper, a SWB (Super-WideBand) dipole antenna with self-complementary structure is proposed for signal intelligence. The proposed antenna consists of a self-complementary dipole antenna and a tapered balun for balanced feeding. The measured -10 dB reflection bandwidth of the proposed antenna is more than 28:1 (0.73-20 GHz) and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth is 3.25:1 (1.91-6.22 GHz) with RHCP (Right Hand Circular Polarization) at +z direction. The measured radiation patterns are omni-directional in lower frequency band and bi-directional in higher frequency band. The measured peak gain within -10 dB reflection bandwidth varies from 2.83 dBi to 7.66 dBi.

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the horseshoe vortex system formed around cylindrical obstacles mounted vertically on the surface over which a boundary layer is formed. To measure the mean velocity of the flow field, a five-hole Pitot tube has been used. In addition, surface static pressure measurements and surface flow visualization were also performed. From the five-hole probe measurements, vorticity distribution was deduced numerically and the streamwise velocity distribution was also examined. To consider the effect of the leading-edge shape on the formation of the horseshoe vortex, a qualitative comparison was made between the three-dimensional flows around a circular cylinder and a wedge-type cylinder. The five-hole probe measurements showed a single primary vortex which exists immediately upstream of the obstacles, and endwall flow visualization showed the existence of a corner vortex. As the vortex passes around the obstacle, the vortex strength is reduced and the vortex core moves radially outward. Due to this horseshoe vortex, the fluid momentum is found to decrease along the streamwise direction. Since the horseshoe vortex formed around a wedge-type cylinder has weaker strength and is confined to a narrower region than that around a circular, the possibility that the secondary flow loss due to the horseshoe vortex can be reduced through a change of the leading- edge shape is proposed.

In this paper, a hollow steel tube (HST) shear connector is proposed for use in a slim-floor system. The HST welded to a perforated steel beam web and embedded in concrete slab. A total of 10 push-out tests were conducted under static loading to investigate the mechanical behavior of the proposed HST connector. The variables were the shapes (circular, square and rectangular) and sizes of hollow steel tubes, and the compressive strength of the concrete. The failure mode was recorded as: concrete slab compressive failure under the steel tube and concrete tensile splitting failure, where no failure occurred in the HST. Test results show that the square shape HST in filled via concrete strength 40 MPa carried the highest shear load value, showing three times more than the reference specimens. It also recorded less slip behavior, and less compressive failure mode in concrete underneath the square hollow connector in comparison with the circular and rectangular HST connectors in both concrete strengths. The rectangular HST shows a 20% higher shear resistance with a longer width in the load direction in comparison with that in the smaller dimension. The energy absorption capacity values showed 23% and 18% improvements with the square HST rather than a headed shear stud when embedded in concrete strengths of 25 MPa and 40 MPa, respectively. Moreover, an analytical method was proposed and predicts the shear resistance of the HST shear connectors with a standard deviation of 0.14 considering the shape and size of the connectors.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the penetration behavior of particulate matters by wave and tidal actions in sandy beach located in enclosed bay and to evaluate the effect of stranded oil on penetration of particulate matters. Experiments were rallied out using a model sandy beach facility. The particulate matters penetrated into saturated sediments by wave action from breaking wave run-up point with a semi-circular forming in low energy beach as enclosed bay. On the other hand, the penetration velocity of the particulate matters was to be faster according to the increase of slope and breaking wave height. The particulate matters by tidal action penetrated into the sediments at an angie of 45 degrees in the direction of porous water flow. The stranded oil completely blocked the penetration of the particulate matters into the sediments. These results indicate that the penetrated oil prevents the penetration of the particulate matters into the sediments and, therefore, results in the reduction in the supply of plankton, bacteria and organic detritus for the benthic organisms in the sandy beach.
