  • In the past decades, extensive studies on convection heat transfer on internal flow have been conducted by using high specific surface area, by increasing heat transfer coefficient and swirl flow, and by improving the transport properties. In this study, we applied a tangential slot swirl generator to improve heat transfer in a horizontal circular copper tube. The Al-Mg particles (approximately $100{\mu}m$ to $130{\mu}m$) were employed for this experimental work. The copper tube was heated uniformly by winding a heating coil with a resistance of 9 ohm per meter for heat transfer. Using Al-Mg particles, experiments were performed in the Reynolds number range of 5,000 to 13,130, with and without swirl. Experimental data transfers or comparisons between Nusselt numbers with and without swirl along the test tube and Reynolds numbers are presented. The Nusselt number is improved by increasing Reynolds numbers or swirl intensities along the test tube.

  • In order to develop a compact evaporator, experiments that show characteristics of evaporating heat transfer and pressure drop in the helically coiled minichannel were performed in our previous research. This study was focused on the performance analysis of helically coiled heat exchangers with circular minichannels with an inner diameter=1.0 mm. The working fluid was R-22, and the properties of R-22 were estimated using the REFPROP program. Numerical simulation was performed to compare results with the experimental results of the helically coiled heat exchanger. As the heat transfer rate and pressure drop were calculated at the micro segment of the branch channels, the performance of the evaporator was evaluated. The following conclusions were obtained through the numerical simulations of the helically coiled heat exchanger. It showed good performance when the flow rate of each branch channels was suitable to heat load of air-side. The numerical simulation value agreed with experimental results within ${\pm}15%$. In this study, a numerical simulation program was developed to estimate the performance of a helically coiled evaporator. And, an optimum helically coiled minichannels evaporator was designed.

  • We have synthesized a 17-residue peptide with the amino acid sequence RQMKEDAKGKSEEELAD corresponding to residues 84-100 of chicken skeletal troponin C. This stretch of the protein sequence is in the middle one-third of the 32-residue 9-turn α-helix that connects the two globular domains of the dumbell-shaped molecule and includes the D/E linker helix. We describe here the solution conformation of the helix linker as studied by circular dichroism (CD) and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2-D NMR) spectroscopy. The NOE connectivities together with the vicinal $^3J_{N{\alpha}}$ coupling constants suggest that the peptide exists in a fast conformational equilibrium among several secondary structure: a nascent helix near the N-terminus, a helix, and a substational population of extended and random coil forms. In addition, two interresidue α-α NOEs are observed suggesting a bent structure with a bend that includes the single glycine in position 92. These results are consistent with the ideas that in neutral solution the D/E linker region of the central helix in troponin C can adopt a helical conformation and the central helix may have a segmental flexibility around Gly 92.

  • In this study, we have constructed a measuring system to investigate tensile stress measurement of tendons, which is employed in bridges, by means of the non-destructive and non-contact method. The measuring system consists of tensile stress applying apparatus up to 2 GPa, and power supply for ac and dc current to tendon directly to magnetize tendon in circular direction and to coil wound on yoke to magnetize tendon in axial direction. We have used two kinds of tendon, which were produced by different companies, using the measuring system constructed in this work. Two kinds of experiments are carried out in this work; $1^{st}$ experiment : ac current was applied to the tendon and dc current was applied to coil wound on the yoke, and voltage induced from search coil wound on yoke (SCY) was measured and $2^{nd}$ experiment : dc current was applied to the tendon and ac current was applied to coil wound on the yoke, and voltage induced from search coil on tendon (SCT) was measured. In case of $1^{st}$ experiment, voltage induced from SCY was changed below 200MPa tensile stress but the voltage was not increased above 200 MPa. In case of $2^{nd}$ experiment, voltage induced from SCT was decreased up to 1.5 GPa linearly. We expect that $2^{nd}$ experiment could be applied to the non-destructive testing of tensile stress measurement of tendon.

  • Toxic Mastoparan B(MP-B) which is purified from the venom of the hornet Vespa basalis is a cationic amphlphilic tetradecapeptide. MP-B and Its Ala-substituted analogues were synthesized by solld phase method and the toxic peptide-membrane interactions were examined by circular dichroism(CD) spectra, fluorescence spectra, and leakage abilities in phospholipid membranes. In the presence of phospholipid vesicles, synthetic MP-B and its analogues formed amphiphilic -helical structures, but in the buffer soletion, those exhibited random coil conformation as measured by CD. Fluorescence spectra of MP-B and its analogues which indicated the binding affinity of peptide on phospholipid vesicles showed that the replacement of Lys at position 2 and 11 with Ala caused a remarkable effect in the blue shalt and that at position 2, in the leakage ability of the peptide.

  • An integrated inductor using the low temperature cofiring ceramics(LTCC) technology was fabricated. The inductor has Ag circular spiral coil with 16 turns (2-turn x 8-layer) and has a dimension of 11.52mm diameter and 0.71mm thick. For the fabricated inductor, calculation method of inductance was given and it is confirmed that the calculated value is very close to the measured one. Finally as an application of the LTCC integrated inductor to low power electronic circuits, a LTCC buck DC/DC converter with 1.32W output power and 1MHz switching frequency using the inductor fabricated was developed. For the converter the maximum efficiency of about 81% was obtained.

  • The analysis and control of a new type unsymmetrical slotted self-bearing step motor for small angle control is presented. The motor actuator is used for both motor and bearing functionality without any additional coil windings or electromagnets for bearing functionality. A circular-arc, straight-line permeance model for the fringing effect is presented. An unsymmetrical slotted self-bearing step motor layout and control algorithm are described. A new control current generation method using the electromagnets layout geometry, which needs no additional current for bearing functionality, is proposed. As the result of this analysis the fringing effect largely influences on the system characteristics. especially in torque. Even if the bearing functionality is added into the motor functionality, it is shown that the magnitude of torque is not changed.
