  • The purpose of this study was to analyze students' physics problem solving processes and to find the patterns of their problem spaces when high school and university students solved the physics problems. A total of 51 students in a high school and in two universities participated in this study. Their thinking processes in solving 5 physics problems on electric circuit were recorded by using 'thinking aloud' method and were transferal into protocols. 'The protocols were analyzed by the coding system of problem solving process. One of the major theoretical contributions of the computer simulation approach to problem solving is the idea of problem space. Such a concept of problem space was applied to physics problems on electric circuit in this study, and students' protocols were analyzed by the basic problem spaces which were made up from the item analysis by the researcher. The results are as follows: 1) On the average 4.0 test items among 5 ones were solved successfully by all subjects, and all of the items were solved correctly by only 19 persons among all of them. 2) In regard to the general steps of problem solving process, there was little difference for each item between the good solvers and the poor ones. But according to the degree of difficulty of task there was a good deal of difference. For a complex problem all of 4 steps were used by most of students, but for a simple one only 3 steps except evaluating step were used by most of them. 3) It was found in this study that most of students used mainly the microscopic approach, that is, a method of applying Ohm's law on electric circuit simply and immediately, not using the properties of electric circuits. And also it was observed that most of students used the soloing tom below, that is, a solving path in which they were the first to calculate physical Quantities of circuit elements, before they caught hold of the meaning of the given problem regardless of the degree of difficulty.

  • An increasing number of power electronic applications require high power density. Therefore, the switching frequency and switching speed have to be raised considerably. However, the very fast switching transients induce a strong voltage and current ringing. In this work, a novel damping concept is introduced where the parasitic wiring inductances are advantageously magnetically coupled with a damping layer for attenuating these unwanted oscillations. The proposed damping layer can be implemented using standard materials and printed circuit board manufacturing processes. The system behavior is analyzed in detail and design guidelines for a damping layer with optimized RC termination network are given. The effectiveness of the introduced layer is determined by layout parasitics which are calculated by application of the Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) simulation method. Finally, simulations and measurements on a laboratory prototype demonstrate the good performance of the proposed damping approach.

  • The objective of this paper is to compare the series and shunt approaches of controlled reactive power compensation to improve power system transient stabilities. Including main circuit considerations of series and shunt compensators, application aspects are thought to have major impacts on efficiency and economy of the installation of the compensators. The concept is studied by means of EMTP simulations on one machine-Infinite Bus Test System which consists of a 612MVA steam turbin generator and transformer and double circuit 345KV transmission line. Idealized dynamic models of Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation and Shunt Compensation are used for the comparative study of the series and shunt compensation approach to damp power system oscillations.

  • New insights are presented in simplified modeling and analysis of free vibrations of piezoelectric - based smart structures and systems. These consist, first, in extending the wide used piezoelectric-thermal analogy (TA) simplified modeling approach in currently static actuation to piezoelectric free-vibrations under short-circuit (SC) and approximate open-circuit (OC) electric conditions; second, the popular piezoelectric strain induced - potential (IP) simplified modeling concept is revisited. It is shown that the IP resulting frequencies are insensitive to the electric SC/OC conditions; in particular, SC frequencies are found to be the same as those resulting from the newly proposed OC TA. Two-dimensional plane strain (PStrain) and plane stress (PStress) free-vibrations problems are then analyzed for above used SC and approximate OC electric conditions. It is shown theoretically and validated numerically that, for both SC and OC electric conditions, PStress frequencies are lower than PStrain ones, and that 3D frequencies are bounded from below by the former and from above by the latter. The same holds for the modal electro-mechanical coupling coefficient that is retained as a comparator of presented models and analyses.

  • A simple but accurate equivalent circuit of an aperture-coupled cavity-fed microstrip patch antenna is developed. It consists of ideal transformers, admittance elements, and transmission lines, and the related circuit element values are computed by applying the reciprocity theorem and complex power concept with the spectral-domain immittance approach. After validating by the published design example, a dual-band antenna was designed with the help of a hybrid optimization method. For this purpose, the Genetic Algorithm is applied with the Nelder-Mead simplex method. The obtained good results show that this approach turned out to be a very efficient tool for the design of aperture-coupled cavity-fed microstrip patch antenna having various structural design parameters.

  • Currently, the CCDs are widely used in astronomical observations either in direct imaging use or spectroscopic mode. However according to the recent technical advances, new large format CCDs are rapidly developed which have better performances with higher quantum efficiency and sensitivity. In many cases, some microprocessors have been adopted to deal with necessary digital logic for a CCD imaging system. This could often lack the flexibility of a system for a user for to upgrade with new devices, especially if it is a commercial product. A new design concept has been explored which could provide the opportunity to deal with any format of devices from any manufactures effectively for as tronomical purposes. Recently available PLD (Programmable Logic Devices)technology makes it possible to develop such digital circuit design, which can be integrated into a single component, instead of using micrprocessors. The design concept could dramatically increase the efficiency and flexibility of a CCD imaging system, particularly when new or large format devices are available and to upgrade the performance of a system. Some variable system control parameters can be selected by a user with a wider range of choice. The software can support such functional requirements very conveniently. This approach can be applied not only to astronomical purpose, but also to some related fields, such as remote sensing and industrial applications.

  • This paper analyzes the religious circuit of suicidal concept based on verbal expression and ritual acts, which are found in the suicide discourse of Korean Catholic Church and Protestant Church. In the relationship of suicide and religion, it is easily overlooked the religious circuit and its construction that forms the concept of suicide among the religious laymen. It is assumed that the belief system of traditional religions prohibits suicide and the laymen accordingly construct a perception or concept of suicide along with this belief system. Various studies on this subject have proved it. However, in order to understand the religious way of constructing the concept of suicide on a personal level, it is necessary to pay attention to the religious environment in which the concepts and emotions of suicide circulate. The laymen do not passively and perfectly accept the finely established suicide concept provided by the doctrine or the theology. Rather, the laymen tend to collect the pieces of concept over the suicide that are drifting in the religious environment of his/her daily routine life and to make an concept of suicide in an incomplete form. We can find the unstable and imperfect traits of such a suicide concept through the experience of suicide survivors who have a religious background. For the suicide survivors with religious beliefs, they resist the formal doctrinal and theological provisions to suicide, or try to understand the notion of suicide in their own contexts. In terms of linguistic expressions and ritual acts relating to suicide, the attentions are differently directed in the public and the private domain among the religious groups. Considering on the high rates of suicide in Korean society, the Korean Catholic Churches are increasingly tolerant over the suicide and accept it in the public sphere. It is unlikely when comparing to the negative attitudes of the suicide in the past. However, such tolerance does not go beyond the doctrinal and ethical judgment that defines suicide as a serious sin. The once-committed lay believer's speech and gestures usually contain the various emotions, such as sadness, grief, anxiety, regretfulness, eagerness, and pain in the private spheres. The language and gestures with these emotions have been activated in the religious circuits of suicide, being extended to the religious apparatus for the person who died of suicide. In case of Protestantism, the institutional organizations, such as the particular denominations and the individual-churchism of the Korean Protestant Churches, and their own interpretations of the Bible have in the private sphere strongly effected on the linguistic expressions and the rituals related to the suicide. The religious-ethical judgment of the suicide is varied how the suicide is interpreted by the theologians and the pastors. And the ritual acts for healing the complex feelings and the psychological wounds of the suicide survivors are not actively explored and adopted yet. It makes harder to approach and heal the protestant followers since they emphasize the innermost belief and the salvation assurance faith.

  • The purpose of this paper is to clarify the prospects and problems in the study of geography related to the concept of commodity, transport, and supply chains. The geography studies related to commodity chains are expanded to each field of industry focusing on the subjects and economic difference which lead the commodity chain in core and periphery regions. These vertical connection are studied with the political economy approach that gives attention to geographical pattern of agricultural products and foods. But in viewpoint of commodity circuit and commodity network, the culture or subjects of micro regions and interaction are also studied. The contents of these study are to clarify the importance of cultural turn and local. And the study of chain standpoint appears that the series of transport process by transportation modes can be understood by transport chains and the physical distribution process of sea freight is to be grasped by supply chains.

  • Industrial cooling towers are often ageing infrastructure that is expensive to maintain and operate. A novel approach is introduced in which a heat pump circuit is incorporated to reduce the load upon the towers by extracting low-grade energy from the stream sent to the towers and repurposing in on-site processing operations. To demonstrate the concept, a model was constructed, which uses industrial data on cooling towers linked to a smelter's sulphuric acid plant, to allow direct economic and environmental impact comparison between different heat recovery and repurposing scenarios. The model's results showed that implementing a heat pump system would significantly decrease annual operating costs and achieve a payback period of 3 years. In addition, overall CO2 emissions could be reduced by 42% (430,000 kg/year) and a 5% heat load reduction on the cooling towers achieved. The concept is significant as the outcomes introduce a new way for energy intensive industrial sectors, such as mineral processing, to reduce energy consumption and improve long-term sustainable performance.

  • Distributed power systems (DPSs) has been widely used various industrial/military applications due to their various advantages. Furthermore, the "All electric" concept, in conjunction with DC DPS, appears to be more advanced and mature in the AEV(All-Electric Vehicular) industry. Generally, AEV carry many loads with varied functions. However, there may be large pulsed loads with short duty ratios which can affect the normal operation of other loads. In this paper, a converter with spilt capacitors and a simple adaptive controller is proposed as a active damping device to mitigate the voltage transients on the bus. The proposed converter allows the smaller capacitive storage. In addition, the proposed control approach has the advantage of requiring only one sensor and performing both the functions of mitigating the voltage bus transients and maintaining the level of energy stored. The control algorithm has been implemented on a TMS320F2812 Digital Signal Processor (DSP). Simulation and experimental results are presented which verify the proposed control principle and demonstrate the practicality of the circuit topology.
