Based on the gross lesion, a survey of ulcer prevalence was carried out on pigs (3,161 heads) at a slaughterhouse in seoul from April to December in 1989. The pigs stomachs were observed anatomically and classified, according to the presence or absence of foreign bodies. Ulcer prevalence is usually classified according to size of pig farm, ages, and supplied month. The results in the studies were as follows, 1. Fundus followed the highest rate with 28.2%, esophagus with 24.5% each of cardiac and pyloric part with 7.8% and 4.1% in cases of gastric mucosa pathological studies examed total 3,161. In the acute ulcer prevalence, fundus follwed with 5.4%, esophagus with 2.6%, each of cardiac and pyloric part with 0.8% and 0.3%. When prevalent frequencies of fundus are compared with cardiac and pyloric part, they have meaning.(P <0.05). 2. In the survey pig of total 3,161, pathological changes of epithelium tissue foliowed 44.0%, erosion(11.5%), chronic ulcer(14.8%), acute ulcer(1.6%), scar formation (1.7%) and perforation (0.9%). 3. In general monthly prevalence rates of gastric lesion are higher in spring and fall than in summer. 4. In the size of pig farms, ulcer showed higher rate at professional farms than raising on the side. 5. When there are more fluid condition in stomach and they are old, the ulcer appeared for more. 6. Foreign bodies in stomach were sand, hairballs, and intestinal worms were detected (1%).
An experimental study was done to examine the effects of Dokwhaljiwhang-tang on gastro-intestinal track and central nervous system and were undertaken by being carried out with rat. The following results have been obtained ; 1. Dokwhaljiwhang-tang showed to have an inhibitory effect on the smooth muscle contraction of the isolated ileum by acetylcholene chloride and barium chloride. 2. Dokwhaljiwhang-tang showed to have an inhibitory effect on the contraction of the gastric fundus-strip by acetylcholine chloride and barium chloride. 3. The preventive effect was recognized on the pylorus-ligated ulcer, by administration of Dokwhaljiwhang-tang. 4. The preventive effect was not recognized on the indomethacine -induced ulcer, by administration of Dokwhaljiwhang-tang. 5. The inhibitory effects on the secretion gastric juice, free acidity were recognized, by administration of Dokwhaljiwhang-tang 6. The transport ability in the small intestine was increased, by administration of Dokwhaljiwhang-tang. 7. The transport ability in the large intestine was increased, by administration of Dokwhaljiwhang-tang. 8. The analgesic effect was recognized, by administration of Dokwhaljiwhang-tang. 9. The effect of sleeping time was not recognized, by administration of Dokwhaljiwhang-tang. according to the results, it is considered that Dokwhaljiwhang-tang has effects of gastric ulcer, chronic gastritis,hyper-acidity, gastroptosis such as abdominal discomfort, gastric acid, indigestion and anorexia.
To assess the association between oral health and general health, this study examined the relationship between chewing difficulty and twelve chronic health conditions such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, cerebro- and cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disease, respiratory disease, eye/nose/throat disease, stomach/intestinal ulcer, renal dysfunction, thyroid disease, depression, and cancer in Korea. The study population was 3,066 elders aged 65 years old and more from the fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Chewing difficulty was measured on a 5-point Likert scale. Chronic conditions were assessed by self-reported questionnaire. Confounders were age, gender, education, income, smoking, drinking, and obesity. Chi-square test, general linear model, and multiple logistic regression model were done with complex sampling design. Musculoskeletal disease (adjusted odds ratio=1.33), respiratory disease (adjusted odds ratio=1.52), and cancer (adjusted odds ratio=1.58) were independently associated with chewing difficulty. Multiple chronic conditions with more than 4 chronic disease showed significant association with chewing difficulty (adjusted odds ratio=1.37).
Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs(NSAIDs) are widely used to treat pain. fever and inflammatory condition. But chronic-disease patients suffer from gastro-intestinal disturbances such as discomfort. nausea. peptic ulcer and severe bleeding because NSAIDs inhibit not only COX-2 associated with anti-inflammatory activity but also COX-1 associated with adverse gastro-intestinal effects. On the basis of this fact. specific COX-2 inhibitors such as celecoxib and rofecoxib are introduced in the drug market. (omitted)
Accumulated data on medical care utilization among the insured in Korea Medical Insurance Corporation can explain the health status of the population. The purpose of this study was to analyze a change of the disease-mix and utilization pattern by controlling the size of the population enrollment. Major findings of the study are as follows : 1. The changes of inpatient disease-mix a. Utilization rate was 139.2% in 1988 against 1980. b. Disease groups higher than the average utilization rate included neoplasms, endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases and immunity disorders, mental disorders etc. Meanwhile, disease groups seen less often were infections and parasistic diseases, diseases of blood and bloodforming, diseases of the digestive system etc. c. Utilization rate was up 106.3% in 1988 compared to 1985, and diseases above that average level were ill-defined intestinal infections, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, essential hypertension, etc. d. The disease-mix by institution in 1988 compared to 1985 shows that chronic disorders rank high in general hospitals whereas opthalmologic, obstetric, and orthopedic diseases rank high in private clinics. 2. The changes of outpatient disease-mix a. Utilization rate was up 175.2% in 1988 compared to 1980. b. Disease groups higher than the average utilization rate included neoplasms, endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases and immunity disorders, mental disorders etc. And disease groups seen less often were infections and parasistic diseases, diseases of the respiratory system, diseases of the genitourinary system. etc. c. Utilization rate was up 104.0% in 1988 compared to 1985, and diseases above that average level were gastric ulcer, diseases of hard tissues of teeth, etc. And diseases seen below that average level were acute nasopharyngitis(common cold). acute upper respiratory infections of multiple or unspecified sites, etc. It was concluded that medical care utilization level was increased, and that, from 1980 to 1988, disease-mix shifted to the chronic disorders. Chronic disorders accounted for more medical care utilization in general hospitals.

This study was carried out to understand the macroscopic aspects of the digestive system symptoms occurring after taking oriental herb complex decoction as observing morphological changes in esophagus, stomach and duodenal bulb by endoscopy of upper gastrointestinal tract when these symptoms developed. The subjects of this study were 46 patients (male 22, female 24, mean age : $54.72{\pm}14.26$ years) who were chosen among ones who took oriental herb complex decoction for medical care and developed symptoms related to the gastrointestinal tract while taking an oriental herb decoction, which were assumed that the digestive symptoms were newly developed because of administration. The subjects were given morphological examination by endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract. As a result of the endoscopy operated due to the digestive symptoms developed during the administration of oriental herb decoction, there were 2 cases of esophagitis, 5 cases of acute gastritis, 1 case of chronic gastritis A type, 15 cases of chronic gastritis B type, 1 case of duodenitis, 1 case of gastric ulcer, 1 case of gastric polyp, 2 cases of intestinal metaplasia, 1 case of gastric ptosis and 17 cases of normal findings which didn't have any abnormality macroscopically with endoscopy. With regards to the patients who complained of the digestive symptoms after taking oriental herb decoction, it has been found that the symptoms occurred as the oriental herbal medicine taken by the patients who had the digestive symptoms at ordinary times influenced on the gastrointestinal tract. Especially, many of them were had chronic gastritis and functional dyspepsia in the past. The disease accompanying macroscopic lesions at endoscopy which occurred due to the oriental herb decoction as direct cause, was acute gastritis, and it was the prescription to cure the pains and inflammations of skeletomuscular disease.

This observation was aimed to evaluate the clinical manifestations and clinical incidence of $Beh{\varsigma}et's$ Disease. It was records of patients seen in the period between January 1992 and December 1998 at the Department of Dermatology, Oriental Medical Hospital, Kyung Hee University. $Beh{\varsigma}et's$ Disease is a chronic, systemic disease which manifests itself as recurrent, multiple lesions in many organs, including the skin. The clinical features of $Beh{\varsigma}et's$ Disease are important as there is no reliable method of laboratory diagnosis. The results were summarized as follows; 1. The total number of patients were 34, including $42\%$ male and $52\%# female. 2. The pick incidence of age group was 30 to 39($44\%$). 3. The most frequent duration was from 2 years to 5 years($41\%$). 4. According to Diagnostic Criteria of the $Beh{\varsigma}et's$ Disease Research committee of Japan, there were $41\%\;of\;Incomplete\;type,\;29\%\;of\;Suspected,\;24\%\;of\;Complete,\;6\%$ of Passible. 5. The most common major symtom is a oral u1cer($91\%$), and there were erythema nodosum like lesion($79\%$), genital ulcer($56\%$), problem of the eyes($38\%$). 6. The most common minor symtom was arthritis($32\%$). 7. The first main symtom were oral ulcer($50\%$), erythema nodosum like lesion($26\%$), problem of the eyes($18\%$). 8. There were 2 cases of Intestinal $Beh{\varsigma}et's$ Disease and 5 cases of uveitis. 9. The most frequently treated prescription was Eunhwasagantang which occupied 79 of all, Gamisopunghwalhultang($44\%$) a.nd Gamipadoksan($41\%$), Gamiguakjungsan($24\%$) in that order of frequency.
Helicobacter pylori is a spiral-shaped, microaerophilic human gastric pathogen causing chronic-active gastritis in association with duodenal ulcer and gastric cancer. To investigate the possibility of H. pylori outer membrane proteins (OMPS) as the oral vaccine antigens, sarcosine-insoluble outer membrane fraction has been prepared from H. pylori NCTC 11637. The major OMPs having apparent molecular masses of 62 kDa, 54 kDa and 33 kDa were detected by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), which were identified as urease B subunit (UreB), heat shock protein (Hsp54 kDa) and urease A subunit (UreA), respectively. Minor protein bands of 57 kDa, 52 kDa, 40 kDa, 36 kDa and 31 kDa were also observed. The antigenicity of H. pylori OMPs and antigenic cross-reactivity among the strains were determined by immunoblot analysis using anti-H. pylori OMPs antisera or intestinal lavage solutions. The results showed that UreB, Hsp54 kDa, UreA and 40 kDa proteins vigorously stimulated mucosal immune response rather than systemic immunity. From this results, these proteins seemed to be useful as the antigen candidates for the oral vaccine. The immunoblotting results with surface proteins from eight isolated H. pylori strains were similar to that of H. pylori NCTC 11637. The IgA which had been arised from oral administration of H. pylori OMPs, was able to bind H. pylori whole-cells.

Objective: Chronic enteropathy associated with SLCO2A1 gene (CEAS) is a recently recognized disease. We aimed to evaluate the enterographic findings of CEAS. Materials and Methods: Altogether, 14 patients with CEAS were confirmed based on known SLCO2A1 mutations. They were registered in a multicenter Korean registry between July 2018 and July 2021. Nine of the patients (37.2 ± 13 years; all female) who underwent surgery-naïve-state computed tomography enterography (CTE) or magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) were identified. Two experienced radiologists reviewed 25 and 2 sets of CTE and MRE examinations, respectively, regarding the small bowel findings. Results: In initial evaluation, eight patients showed a total of 37 areas with mural abnormalities in the ileum on CTE, including 1-4 segments in six and > 10 segments in two patients. One patient showed unremarkable CTE. The involved segments were 10-85 mm (median, 20 mm) in length, 3-14 mm (median, 7 mm) in mural thickness, circumferential in 86.5% (32/37), and showed stratified enhancement in the enteric and portal phases in 91.9% (34/37) and 81.8% (9/11), respectively. Perienteric infiltration and prominent vasa recta were noted in 2.7% (1/37) and 13.5% (5/37), respectively. Bowel strictures were identified in six patients (66.7%), with a maximum upstream diameter of 31-48 mm. Two patients underwent surgery for strictures immediately after the initial enterography. Follow-up CTE and MRE in the remaining patients showed minimal-to-mild changes in the extent and thickness of the mural involvement for 17-138 months (median, 47.5 months) after initial enterography. Two patients required surgery for bowel stricture at 19 and 38 months of follow-up, respectively. Conclusion: CEAS of the small bowel typically manifested on enterography in varying numbers and lengths of abnormal ileal segments that showed circumferential mural thickening with layered enhancement without perienteric abnormalities. The lesions caused bowel strictures that required surgery in some patients.
Helicobacter pylori is the causative agent of chronic gastritis and has a role in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer diseases, and gastric cancer. There have been reports suggesting a close link between these gastroduodenal disorders and a state of vitamin C deficiency. In this paper, the past, present and future perspectives on H. pylori infection and vitamin C will be discussed under the following view points. Since the ecological niche of H. pylori is the mucus layer and intercellular junctions of the gastric epithelium, the various kinds of host inflammatory cells motivated by the local and systemic immune responses cannot eliminate the microorganisms. When the invading foreign body is not removed, despite full activation of defense mechanisms, adverse consequences of the immune responses develop on the host gastric mucosa. The reasons for the body vitamin C depletion could be explained as follows; 1) the increased vitamin C consumption by increased oxygen free radical production through the prolonged hypersensitivity reactions in the gastric mucosa, 2) the increased vitamin C oxidation by the nitrite which is formed from nitrate reduction by the intragastric bacteria proliferated in the hypochlorhydric gastric cavity, 3) the strong ${\gamma}$-glutamyltranspeptidase activity of H. pylori which depletes the glutathiones in gastric mucosa. Depletion of glutathiones in the stomach favors irreversible oxidative destruction of ascorbic acid. Both persistent inflammatory burdens in the stomach by H. pylori and resultant vitamin C depletions synergistically and uninhibitedly might aggravate the hypothetical sequence of gastric carcinogenesis: atrophic gastritis${\rightarrow}$intestinal metaplasia${\rightarrow}$dysplasia${\rightarrow}$gastric adenocarcinoma. High intake of vitamin C could reverse the hypothetical sequence of the gastric carcinogenesis via direct and indirect effects on H. pylori and host-parasite relationships.
