  • In an earlier work, we proposed the chromatic dispersion monitoring technique of non-return to zero (NRZ) signal based on clock-frequency component (CFC) through numerical simulations. However, we have not yet shown any experimental demonstration or analytic derivation of it. In this paper, we show an experimental demonstration and analytic derivation of the proposed chromatic dispersion monitoring technique. We confirm that the experimental results and the analytic results correspond with the simulation results. We also demonstrate that monitoring range and accuracy can be improved by using a simple clock-extraction method.

  • This paper presents a chromatic dispersion monitoring technique using a clock-frequency component for carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) signal. The clock-frequency component is extracted by a clock-extraction (CE) process. To discover which CE methods are most efficient for dispersion monitoring, we evaluate the monitoring performance of each extracted clock signal. We also evaluate the monitoring ability to detect the optimum amount of dispersion compensation when optical nonlinearity exists, since it is more important in nonlinear transmission systems. We demonstrate efficient CE methods of CSRZ signal to monitor chromatic dispersion for optimum compensation in high-speed optical communication systems.

  • In this paper we propose an electronic domain timing phase selection scheme for the optical communication systems suffering from inter-symbol-interference (ISI) distortion due to chromatic dispersion (CD) or polarization mode dispersion (PMD). In the presence of CD/PMD a proper timing phase selection is important for discrete time domain equalizers, since different timing phases produce different nonlinear ISI channels of different severity. The proposed timing phase recovery scheme based on dispersion minimization (DM) practically approximates the optimal minimum mean squared error (MMSE) timing phase without training signals which reduces overall throughput substantially, especially in time-varying channels such as PMD. The simulation results show that the proposed DM timing agrees with MMSE timing phase, under proper normalization of the received signals, for various dispersion and OSNR.

  • In single mode fiber optic transmission systems(FOT's) operated at high modulation rates over long fiber spans, chromatic dispersion can produce distortion in the demodulated waveforms, resulting in intersymbol interference(ISI) in the received signal and a reduction of transmission system performance. In this paper, chromatic dispersion limitations for intensity modulation and direct detection(IM-DD) systems are studied by considering the effect of phase modulation to amplitude modulation (PM-AM) conversion noise. Laser phase noise conversion to amplitude noise due to fiber chromatic dispersion is analyzed by deriving the noise power spectral density. We first derive the noise power spectral density of the laser phase noise to intensity noise conver- sion. Next, also evaluate the system power penalty and the transmitter laser linewidth required to avoid PM-AM conversion noise penalties in long-haul nonregenerative transmission system using an external modulator and optical amplifiers. For such system with optical amplifiers, transmission sys- tem length is limited due to fiber chromatic dispersion, even if an ideal external modulator is used.

  • It is shown that the SSB modulated signal has smaller chromatic-dispersion induced penalty than the DSB modulated signal only when the accumulated dispersion is large. When the accumulated dispersion is small, the SSB modulated signal has larger dispersion penalty than the DSB modulated signal. Therefore, if one builds a system with very low dispersion penalty, SSB modulation may end up with a larger dispersion penalty.

  • We present a novel chromatic dispersion measurement method using a spectral domain interferometer for single mode optical fiber over a wide spectral range (200 nm). This technique is based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer using a white light source and spectrometer. A phase was directly retrieved from a measured spectral interferogram to obtain relative group velocity, chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope. The measured results with the proposed method were compared with those obtained using a conventional measurement method. Those results have good agreement with each other. Our proposed method can simply, accurately, and quickly (< 500 ms) measure chromatic information for a short length of optical fiber as well as optical device.

  • In this letter, we will evaluate the performance degradation of a 40 km high-speed (40 Gb/s) optical system, induced by optical fiber variations of the chromatic dispersion induced by temperature changes. The chromatic dispersion temperature sensitivity will be estimated based on the signal quality parameters.

  • Choromatic dispersion of single mode optical fibers limits the maximum bit rate in the single mode optical transmission systems. In this paper we calculate chromatic dispersion and dispersion parametes(zero dispersion wavelength, dispersion slope) for concatenated single mode optical fibers form the chromatic dispersion and dispersion parameters of individual single mode optical fibers, and compare theoretical valuse with those measrued by double demodulation method. Calculated values are coincident with measured ones reasonably. The standard deviation is 0.77-1.28nm for zero dispersion wavelength and 0.56-0.75PS/km.nm2 for dispersion slope. The standard deviation of zero dispersion wavelength is inverse proportional to the optical fiber lenght.

  • The dependence of the performance of 40-Gb/s optical transmission using short pulses on the fiber chromatic dispersion is numerically studied. When very short pulses are used, the wide spectrum of the optical signal and the chromatic dispersion of the fiber interact in such a way that results in the reduction of nonlinear impairments of the transmission performance. The degree of this reduction is determined by the combined effects of chromatic dispersion of the fiber and the strength of the optical signal and the transmission distance. When 3ps-long pulses were used for the transmission, the eye-closure penalty was highest with the dispersion D=4ps/nm/km.

  • In this paper, The Influence of chromatic fiber dispersion on the transmission distance of MMW(millimeter-wave) link is analyzed and discussed. It is shown that dispersion significantly limits the transmission distance in intensity modulated direct detection and heterodyne links operating in the above 20㎓ frequency region by inducing a carrier to noise penalty on the transmitted signal. We analyze and discuss the influence of dispersion induced CNR(Carrier to Noise Ratio) penalty for direct detection and heterodyne method from simulation.
