Combined Effects of Sideslip and AOA on the Vortical Flow of Delta Wing (삼각날개 와류장에서의 옆미끄럼과 받음각의 복합효과)

  • This paper presents results from steady wind tunnel test conducted on a $65^{\circ}$ delta wing at a root chord Reynolds number of $1.76{\times}10^6$. In these experiments, the wing was instrumented with 188 pressure taps, conjunction with powerful multi-channel data logging system, allowed the wing upper surface pressure distribution to be measured. Analysis indicates that the wing upper surface distribution can provide considerable insight into the comvined aerodynamic effects of angle of attack and sideslip on the wing. In a sideslip condition, the strength of the vortex on the windward side is much stronger than that of leeward side. This asymmetric pressure disstribution betwwen each side of wings result in a negative value of rolling moment. However, at a certatin range of angle of attck and sideslip angle(${\alpha}$=$24^{\circ}{\sim}36^{\circ}C$, ${\beta}$=$-5^{\circ}{\sim}-15^{\circ}C$) abrupt change of sign of rolling monent, rolling monent reversal, was observed.

Unsteady Flow Analysis around an Elliptic Cylinder at Various angles of Attack: Drag and Lift Forces (받음각이 있는 타원형 실린더 주위의 비정상 유동해석: 항력 및 양력 고찰)

  • A parametric study has been accomplished to figure out the effects of the elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number on the lift and drag forces exerted on the elliptic cylinder. A two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed using SIMPLER method to analyze the unsteady viscous flow over elliptic cylinder. Thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 400 and 600, and angles of attack of $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$. Through this study, it is observed that the elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number affect significantly not only the time-mean values and the amplitudes of the drag and lift forces but also the frequencies of the force oscillations.

A Comparative Study on Aerodynamic Validation in Design Process of an Airfoil for Megawatt-Class Wind Turbine (메가와트 급 풍력터빈용 에어포일의 설계 단계에서의 공력성능 검증 기법 비교)

  • A comparative study between a wind tunnel test and an XFOIL simulation looking at the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil for MW-class wind turbine was conducted for validation in the design stage. Tests are carried out for 21% and 30% thickness-ratio airfoils developed for 5 ~ 10 MW offshore wind turbine and the results are compared with the output from the XFOIL simulation at Reynolds number $1.0{\times}10^7$. The test is performed at a free-stream velocity of 50 m/s, corresponding to a Reynolds number of $2.2{\times}10^6$ based on the chord. Surface roughness is simulated using a zig-zag tape. Discrepancies between the results of the test and the XFOIL analysis are found, however, meaningful data for surface pressure distribution, basic performance and surface roughness effect are obtained from the tests, while useful lift-to-drag ratio data is found by the XFOIL simulation.

Unsteady Aerodynamic Characteristics depending on Reduced Frequency for a Pitching NACA0012 Airfoil at Rec=2.3×104

  • Most of small air vehicles with moving wing fly at low Reynolds number condition and the reduced frequency of the moving wing ranges from 0.0 to 1.0. The physical phenomena over the wing dramatically vary with the reduced frequency. This study examines experimentally the effect of the reduced frequency at low Reynolds number. The NACA0012 airfoil performs sinusoidal pitching motion with respect to the quarter chord with the four reduced frequencies of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.76 at the Reynolds number $2.3{\times}10^4$. Smoke-wire flow visualization, unsteady surface pressure measurement, and unsteady force calculation are conducted. At the reduced frequency of 0.1 and 0.2, various boundary layer events such as reverse flow, discrete vortices, separation and reattachment change the amplitude and the rotation direction of the unsteady force hysteresis. However, the boundary layer events abruptly disappear at the reduced frequency of 0.4 and 0.76. Especially at the reduced frequency of 0.76, the local variation of the unsteady force with respect to the angle of attack completely vanishes. These results lead us to the conclusion that the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the reduced frequency of 0.2 and 0.4 are clearly distinguishable and the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics below the reduced frequency of 0.2 are governed by the boundary layer events.

Modulation of Large Conductance $Ca^{2+}-activated$ $K^+4$ Channel of Skin Fibroblast (CRL-1474) by Cyclic Nucleotides

  • Potassium channels in human skin fibroblast have been studied as a possible site of Alzheimer disease pathogenesis. Fibroblasts in Alzheimer disease show alterations in signal transduction pathway such as changes in $Ca^{2+}$ homeostasis and/or $Ca^{2+}-activated$ kinases, phosphatidylinositol cascade, protein kinase C activity, cAMP levels and absence of specific $K^+$ channel. However, little is known so far about electrophysiological and pharmacological characteristics of large-conductance $Ca^{2+}$-activated $K^+$ ($BK_{Ca}$) channel in human fibroblast (CRL-1474). In the present study, we found Iberiotoxin- and TEA-sensitive outward rectifying oscillatory current with whole-cell recordings. Single channel analysis showed large conductance $K^{+}$ channels (106 pS of chord conductance at +40 mV in physiological $K^+$ gradient). The 106 pS channels were activated by membrane potential and $[Ca^{2+}]_i$, consistent with the known properties of $BK_{Ca}$ channels. $BK_{Ca}$ channels in CRL-1474 were positively regulated by adenylate cyclase activator ($10{\mu}M$ forskolin), 8-Br-cyclic AMP ($300{\mu}M$) or 8-Br-cyclic GMP ($300{\mu}M$). These results suggest that human skin fibroblasts (CR-1474) have typical $BK_{Ca}$ channel and this channel could be modulated by c-AMP and c-GMP. The electrophysiological characteristics of fibroblasts might be used as the diagnostic clues for Alzheimer disease.

Effect of Groove Shape of Blade Tip on Tip Surface Heat Transfer Coefficient Distributions of a Turbine Cascade (블레이드 팁의 Groove 형상이 터빈 캐스케이드 팁 열전달 계수분포에 미치는 영향에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, the conventional plane tip, double squealer tip, and various groove tip blades were tested in a linear cascade in order to measure the effect of the tip shapes on tip surface heat transfer coefficient distributions. Detailed heat transfer coefficient distributions were measured using a hue-detection based transient liquid crystals technique. Two tip gap clearances of 1.5% and 2.3% of blade span were investigated and the Reynolds number based on cascade exit velocity and chord length was $2.48{\times}10^5$. Results showed that the overall heat transfer coefficients on the tip surface with various grooved tips were lower than those with plane tip blade. The overall heat transfer coefficient on grooved along suction side tip was lower than that on the squealer tip.

Rehabilitation of a distressed steel roof truss - A study

  • Structural failures are undesirable events that devastate the construction industry resulting in loss of life, injury, huge property loss, and also affect the economy of the region. Roof truss failures occur mainly due to excessive loading, improper fabrication, deterioration, inadequate repair, etc. Although very rare, a roof truss may even fail due to inappropriate location of supports. One such case was reported from the recent failure of a steel roof truss used in an indoor stadium at Kargil in India. Kargil region, being mountainous in nature, receives heavy snowfall and hence the steel roof trusses are designed for heavy snow loads. Due to inappropriate support location, the indoor stadium's steel roof truss had failed under heavy snow load for which it was designed and became an interesting structural engineering problem. The failure observed was primarily in terms of yielding of the bottom chord under the supports, leading to partial collapse of the roof truss. This paper summarizes the results of laboratory tests and analytical studies that focused on the validation of the proposed remedial measure for rehabilitating this distressed steel roof truss. The study presents the evaluation of (i) significant reduction in strength and stiffness of the distressed truss resulting in its failure, (ii) desired recovery in both strength and stiffness of the rectified truss contributed by the proposed remedial measure. Three types of models i.e., ideal truss model, as build truss model and rectified truss model were fabricated and tested under monotonic loading. The structural configuration and support condition varied in all the three models to represent the ideal truss, distressed truss and the rectified truss. To verify the accuracy of the experimental results, an analytical study was carried out and the results of this analytical study are compared with the experimental ones.

Surface Pressure Measurement on a Rotor Blade using Fast-Responding PSP (고속압력감응페인트를 이용한 로터 블레이드 표면 압력 측정)

  • The present study was conducted by using fast-responding PSP technique to measure the surface pressure on a small-scale rotor blade in hover. Also, the study was performed to verify the accuracy and investigate its possibility of PSP application for rotor blade pressure measurement. Pulsed laser which has 532 nm wavelength was used as a light source. Lifetime measurement technique was applied. Also, the coated paint on a rotor blade was porous PSP which has faster response time than conventional PSP. The blades had NACA0012 airfoils. The length of rotor blade was 340 mm and chord was 40 mm with rectangular shape 1 set, and 4 sets had several tip sweepback angles. The measured results qualitatively showed that the upper surface pressure decreases with increasing the collective pitch angle. Quantitative pressure coefficients of PSP results were higher approximately 0.4 to 0.7 than the pressure tap data of the NASA experiment.

3S: Scalable, Secure and Seamless Inter-Domain Mobility Management Scheme in Proxy Mobile IPv6 Networks (프록시 모바일 IPv6 네트워크에서 3S를 고려한 도메인간 이동성관리 기법)

  • Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) has received considerable attention between telecommunications and the Internet communities and does not require active participation of the Mobile Node (MN) by way of network-based mobility management. The PMIPv6 domain is studying establishment in progress to support extensively a number of MN by using a low handover latency. In this research, we are propose a novel 3S scheme for building Scalable and Secure and Seamless PMIPv6 domains. In the proposed scheme, all of Mobility Access Gateway (MAG) are acting as the Local Mobility Anchor (LMA) and composing a virtual ring with another MAG. General hashing is used in the efficient distribution-mapping between each MN and the MN's LMA of all MAGs. And, MAG and MN are authenticated using the symmetric key. Through mathematical analysis, we verifies the safety, scalability, and seamless service for 3S. Also, we're propose a handover procedure of 3S and show better than the existing schemes in terms of handover latency.

Music Retrieval Using the Geometric Hashing Technique (기하학적 해싱 기법을 이용한 음악 검색)

  • In this paper, we present a music retrieval system that compares the geometric structure of a melody specified by a user with those in a music database. The system finds matches between a query melody and melodies in the database by analyzing both structural and contextual features. The retrieval method is based on the geometric hashing algorithm which consists of two steps; the preprocessing step and the recognition step. During the preprocessing step, we divide a melody into several fragments and analyze the pitch and duration of each note of the fragments to find a structural feature. To find a contextual feature, we find a main chord for each fragment. During the recognition step, we divide the query melody specified by a user into several fragments and search through all fragments in the database that are structurally and contextually similar to the melody. A vote is cast for each of the fragments and the music whose total votes are the maximum is the music that contains a matching melody against the query melody. Using our approach, we can find similar melodies in a music database quickly. We can also apply the method to detect plagiarism in music.
