  • Human language activity in the information society has been developing the communication system between humans and machines. The aim of this study was to analyze dialectal speech in Korea. One hundred Kyungsang and one hundred Cholla informants participated in this study. A CSL and Flexible laryngeal fiberscope were used for analysis of the acoustic and glottal gestures of all the vowels and consonants. Test words were made on the picture cards and letter cards which contained each vowel and each consonant, respectively. The dialogue between the examiner and the informants was recorded in a question and answer manner. The acoustic results of two dialects were as follows: Kyungsang and Cholla informants showed neutralization between /e/ and /$\varepsilon$. However, the apertures of Kyungsang vowels /i, w, u, o/ were higher than those of Cholla vowels. The /wi/ and /$\varepsilon$/ of Kyungsang Diphthong vowels were shown as simple vowels /i/ and /$\varepsilon$/ in Cholla dialect. The VOT of Cholla dilaect was longer than that of Kyungsang dialect. The fricative frequence of Kyurlgsang dialect was about 1000Hz higher than that of Cholla dialect. The glottal widths on fiberscopic images showed that the consonant durations of Kyungsang and Cholla dialects were correlated all together with the acoustic duration on the spectrogram.

  • The only record of spider's from Cholla Namdo was made by T. Kambe in 1953. They were collected from Mokpo area which is located south-west coast of Cholla Namdo and included 24 species belonging to 8 families. In this paper are given for the first time a iist of spiders from Kwangju City, inland of Cholla Namdo. wis located at the center of Cholla Namdo. More than 5,000 individual spiders were collected by one of the junior author, J.K. Yoon during autumn in 1570. In spite ef rather large number of spiders were collected, collecting season and the locality are restricted, number of species was reiatit·ely small and many young spiders were undeterminable, A total of 50 species belong to 15 families, including 5 unrecorded species from Korea, were identified. Unrecorded species were as follows: Uloborus yesoensis $(S_{AITO},\;1934)$ Pirate piraticus $(C_{LERCK},\;, 1757)$ Stemmops sp. Trochosa ruricola$(D_E\; G_{EER},\; 1778)$ Erigone koshiensis $O_r$, 1960

  • This paper examines the categorical labeling of lexical pitch accent contrasts in North Kyungsang and South Cholla Korean listeners. It focuses specifically on investigating whether the pitch accent perception of adults and children has a dialect-specific effect. To evaluate the development of perceptual identification, slopes, intercepts, and positions at categorical boundaries were computed using a logistic regression function. The results showed that differences in slopes and intercepts were significant between North Kyungsang child and adult listeners, but the same was not the case for the positions at boundaries. As far as South Cholla child and adult listeners were concerned, there was a significant difference in slopes, but not intercepts and positions at boundaries. In the present study, the comparison of intercepts and slopes at the boundaries indicated developmental differences between North Kyungsang adult and child listeners. This improvement in categorical proportion seems to be a result of developmental changes in categorical perception. For South Cholla adult and child listeners, however, perception of the non-native contrast becomes less categorical.

  • This paper describes the categorical effects of pitch accent contrasts in a mimicry task. It focuses, specifically, on examining how fundamental frequency (f0) variation reflects phonological contrasts from speakers of two distinct varieties of Korean (i.e., North Kyungsang and South Cholla). The results showed that, in a mimicry task using synthetic speech continua, there was a categorical effect in f0 peak timing for North Kyungsang speakers, but the timing of f0 peaks and valleys in the responses of South Cholla speakers was more variable, presenting a gradient or non-categorical effect. Evidence of categorical effects was represented as the shift of f0 peak times along an acoustic continuum for North Kyungsang speakers. The range for the shift of f0 valley times was much narrower, compared to that of f0 peak times. The degree of a shift near the middle of the continuum showed variability across individual mimicry responses. However, the categorical structure in mimicry responses regarding the clustering of f0 peak points was more significant for North Kyungsang speakers than for South Cholla speakers. Additionally, the finding of the current study implies that the location of f0 peak times depends on individuals' imitative (or cognitive) abilities.

  • One hundred twelve domestic dog sera were collected from Kyonggi, Kanngwon, Cholla, and Kyongsang province. All the sera were examined by immunofluorescence antibody test(IFAT) against scrub typhus, murine typhus and spotted fever group rickettsia infection. The antibody prevalence was 5.40%(6/112) against scrub typhus. The sero-prevalence rates of scrub typhus were 16.30%(5/31) in Cholla and 5.90%(1/17)in Kyonggi areas. The prevalence of scrub typhus was higher in older dogs that were 6 years or more. The antibody prevalence was 8.04%(9/112) against murine typhus. The sero-positive rates to murine typhus were 5.88%(1/17) in Kyonggi, 8.33%(2/24) in Kangwon, 9.68%(3/31) in Cholla, and 7.50%(3/40) in Kyongsang areas, respectively. The sero-positive dogs to murine typhus were widely distributed throughout all age groups from 2 months to above 9 years old. The antibody prevalence was 16.96%(19/112) for spotted fever group rickettsial infection. The sero-positive rates of spotted fever group rickettsia were 11.76%(2/17) in Kyonggi, 12.90%(4/31) in Cholla, and 32.50%(13/40) in Kyongsang areas. The sero-positive dogs to spotted fever group rickettsia were observed at all age groups of dog. The sero-positive prevalence between sex showed higher in female than in male except for spotted fever group rickettsia infection.

  • Recently, there have been active researches regarding endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). In this study, fifteen small freshwater streams in Cholla-namdo province, South Korea were investigated with respect to the concentration of the endocrine disruptors - Bisphenol A (BPA), styrene monomer (SM), styrene dimer (SD), and styrene trimer (ST) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Measured concentration of the target compounds in the sampled water ranged from

  • Sixty eight wild rats, Rattus norvegicus, were caught from Seoul city, Kyonggi, Kangwon, Cholla, and Kyongsang-provinces. All sera collected from rats were examined by immunofluorescent test to find antibody against murine typhus. The antibody prevalance to murine typhus was 4.4%(3/68). Sero-positive rate was 12.5%(2/16) in Kyonggi province and 12.5%(1/8) in Cholla province. The sero-positive rate difference between sexes of rats was not recognized. Three Rattus norvegicus having antibody to murine typhus were morphologically classified as subadult with 8.3%(1/12), middle-aged adult with 5.9%(1/17), and old adult with 4.8%(1/21), respectively.

  • Morphological and ecological comparions are made between specimens of Cobitis koreensis KIM and the geographically restricted population of the Cobitid fish which is found along the Begchon stream, Puangun, Cholla-bugdo province over a 12-month period of 1982 and 1983. The Begchon population is tentatively identified as Cobitis koreensis, but the color patterns and two morphometric proportions differ widely fromthose reported previously for this species. In addition to these character, it is easily distinguished from C. koreensis by the smaller body size, by having the larger egg size and the less egg number in female during the breeding season. As the differentiation of this population is primarily due to geographically isolation, it is supposed that Begchon cobitid population may be an undescribed distinct subspecies of K. koreensis or above the conventional subspecies level.
