  • In this study, cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) was synthesized and applied as a polarizing component on the optical film of back light units (BLU) for LCDs. After mixing CLC with nematic liquid crystal, this mixture was fulfilled in the module consisting of two films and then its amplifying efficiency and polarizing ability for a planarly emitted light were examined to apply as a BLU polarizer film for increasing the brightness of light. The properties of CLC compound were tested by UV/Visible spectroscopy and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Flexible spacer was made by linear carboxylic acid group of cholesteric derivatives between cholesterol mesogen units for one-axis orientation in each layer. The CLC containing film could be used as a module to increase the ability of polarization and to enhance brightness of BLU and to widen wavelength range by stacking the films.

  • Side-chain liquid crystalline polymers having polysiloxane skeletons were synthesized by a thiol-ene reaction, using two kinds of mesogenic groups: a cholesteryl group for induction into a cholesteric liquid crystal phase and a triazomesogenic group for imparting light-sensitivity. All the synthesized polymers were crystalline, except the one with a single cholesteryl group. Crystallinity, glass transition temperature, and melt transition temperature increased with increasing content of the azomesogenic group. The polymer (P-C10A0) with a single cholesteryl group has a cholesteric phase, the one (P-C0A10) with a single azomesogenic group has a smectic phase, and those with both types of mesogenic groups showed both smectic and cholesteric phases. The temperature ranges of the two liquid crystalline phases in the co-polymers were independent of the contents of the two types of mesogenic groups. The rate of photoisomerization of the light-sensitive azobenzene group in the polymer decreased with increasing azobenzene content due to steric hindrance between the azomesogenic groups.

  • Due to their periodic helical structure, cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) have a unique ability to selectively reflect light. CLC films reflecting a broad wavelength band were prepared by inducing a pitch gradient in CLC layer through a phase separation. The reflection bandwidth of the CLC cell was broaden as irradiation light intensity decreased and as the amount of the UV absorbing dye increased. Initial reflection bandwidth of 50 nm was broaden to 300 nm Various pitch distributions in the CLC cell was observed using SEM and ATR-IR technique was used to prove that the pitch distributions are induced through the phase separation.

  • This study is about the development of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs), which are highly applicable to cosmetics formulation. The CLCs made from non-animal origin were chosen not only because they are free of animal viruses but also because they give a sense of security to the cosmetic consumers. Three kinds of new cholesteric derivatives (CI, CC, CN) were synthesized using non-animal cholesterol [NAB cholesterol (ARCH LONZA)], which was originally made by fermentation process. To develop high applicability to cosmetics formulation, we attempted to find out the optimum compositions in which CLCs can maintain their color over a wide range of temperature. The CLCs in 41 different compositions were prepared by the combinations of three cholesteric derivatives and a visual evaluation method was employed to determine the range of temperature at which the CLCs display their color. The 205 UV-VIS spectral data obtained from 41 CLCs at various temperatures were simultaneously analyzed to investigate the critical factors affecting the characteristics of the CLCs. Results showed that A4, A5, A6 and A7 were the best compositions to cosmetics formulation. A6 composition had a great moisturizing effect by the artificial skin test ($AmoReSkin^{TM}$).

  • A new hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) capable of exhibiting reflection colours in the temperature ranges of about 60-$130^{\circ}C$ and acrylic acid esters of HPC (ESs) with degree of esterification (DE) ranging from 1 to 3 were synthesized. The crosslinked ES films with the optical pitch ($\lambda_m$) ranging throughout the visible region were also prepared by exposing thermotropic cholesteric phases of ESs with a DE of more than 2 to UV light at $50^{\circ}C$. The thermal and optical properties for both the uncrosslinked and crosslinked samples and the swelling behavior of the crosslinked films in acetone were investigated. The $\lambda_m$'s of ESs, as well as HPC itself, increased with temperature. However, the $\lambda_m$'s of ESs were larger than of HPC at the same temperature and decreased with increasing DE. The temperature dependence of $\lambda_m$of the crosslinked samples was much weaker than that of ESs. Moreover, in contrast with ESs that exhibit a decrease of the isotropization temperature with increase in the DE, the networks were found to decompose at about $210^{\circ}C$, giving no transition to an isotropic state. The crosslinked samples exhibited an anisotropic swelling, suggesting that the two-dimensional crosslinking preferentially performs between ES molecules.

  • The prototype of color fitters for the liquid crystal displays (LCD) using cholesteric liquid crystal monomers was produced. Cholesteric liquid crystal is characterized by the unique optical features of selective reflection, which is due to the helical twisting structures of LCs comparable to the wavelength of the incident light under certain conditions of substrate treatment. In the results of the experiment, cholesteric films for red, green, and blue light reflections respectively were produced and the viewing angle dependence of these films were investigated. Reflective light of red and green films shifted to shorter wavelength regions as viewing angle becomes greater, but blue one shifted very little. Periodic micrometer-sized half-spherical photoresist formed by thermal reflow method after photo-lithography was patterned on glass substrates. The viewing angle dependence of reflective light colors of red, green, and blue films on the patterned substrates compared with those on no patterned substrates was investigated. We could confirm the dependences were much smaller on the patterned substrates by bare eyes and Lab-color coordination methods qualitatively.

  • We measured the spectral transmittance of the cholesteric mixtures of ZLI-1167 and CB15 for various weight fractions of CB15 in the mixture to find out the relationship between the center wavelength of the selective reflection band and the weight fraction of CB15 in the mixture. Left handed circular polarizer for 632.8 nm was designed and fabricated with this mixture whose weight fraction of CB15 was 33.19%. The ellipticity of the elliptical polarization of the transmitted light was measured to be 0.98 showing excellent property of the CLC circular polarizer.
