Photosynthetic characteristics and chlorophyll of Vitex rotundifolia in coastal sand dune

  • Background: This study analyzed the physiological adaptations of a woody plant, Vitex rotundifolia, in Goraebul coastal sand dunes from May to September 2022. Environmental factors and physiological of plants growing under field and controlled (pot) conditions were compared. Results: Photosynthesis in plants growing in the coastal sand dunes and pots was the highest in June 2022 and July 2022, respectively. Chlorophyll fluorescence indicated the presence of stress in the coastal sand dune environment. The net photosynthesis rate (PN) and Y(II) were highest in June in the coastal sand dune environment and July in the pot environment. In August and September, Y(NPQ) increased in the plants in the coastal sand dune environment, showing their photoprotective mechanism. Chlorophyll a and b contents in the pot plant leaves were higher than those in the coastal sand dune plant leaves; however, chlorophyll-a/b ratio was higher in the coastal sand dune plant leaves than in the pot plant leaves, suggesting a relatively high photosynthetic efficiency. Carotenoid content in the coastal sand dune plant leaves was higher in August and September 2022 than that in the pot plant leaves. Leaf water and soluble carbohydrate contents of the coastal sand dune plant leaves decreased in September 2022, leading to rapid leaf abscission. Diurnal variations in photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence in both environments showed peak activity at 12:00 hour; however, the coastal sand dune plants had lower growth rates and Y(II) than the pot plants. Plants in the coastal sand dunes had higher leaf water and ion contents, indicating that they adapted to water stress through osmotic adjustments. However, plants growing in the coastal sand dunes exhibited reduced photosynthetic activity and accelerated decline due to seasonal temperature decreases. These findings demonstrate the adaptation mechanisms of V. rotundifolia to water stress, poor soils, and high temperature conditions in coastal sand dunes. Conclusions: The observed variations indicate the responses of the V. rotundifolia to environmental stress, and may reveal its survival strategies and adaptation mechanisms to stress. The results provide insights into the ecophysiological characteristics of V. rotundifolia and a basis for the conservation and restoration of damaged coastal sand dunes.

SO2 노출된 4개 수종의 엽내 광색소 함량 및 SOD 활성 변화 (Changes of Photosynthetic Pigment Contents and SOD Activity in the Leaves of Four Tree Species Exposed to SO2)

  • 목본 식물을 대상으로 SO$_2$에 의해 나타나는 생리적인 반응을 구명하기 위하여 소나무, 오갈피나무, 현사시, 상수리나무를 대상으로 SO$_2$를 500 ppb, 800 ppb로 하루에 8시간씩 7일간 처리하여 잎의 광색소 함량과 SOD 활성을 비교 분석한 결과는 다음과 같았다. SO$_2$의 처리 농도가 증가할수록 4개 수목의 엽 내 엽록소 함량은 감소하였으며, 엽록소 a와 엽록소 b, 카로티노이드 함량의 변화는 수종별, 처리별로 다른 경향을 보였다. 오갈피나무와 상수리나무의 엽록소 b와 a의 비는 SO$_2$는 500 ppb 처리구에서는 증가하다가 800ppb 처리구에서는 감소하였다. 즉 500ppb에서는 엽록소 a가 파괴되며, 800ppb에서는 엽록소 b도 파괴될 수 있음을 보여 주었으며, SO$_2$에 대한 민감성은 엽록소 a가 엽록소 b보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 4개 수종의 잎 SOD활성은 수종별, 처리별 큰 차이를 나타냈다. 오갈피나무와 상수리나무는 500 ppb 처리구에서는 SOD 활성이 증가하다가 더 높은 농도에서는 활성이 감소하였으며, 소나무와 현사시의 경우는 500ppb 처리와 800ppb 처리에서 높은 SOD활성을 유지하여 내성을 보인다. 그러나 광색소와 SOD 활성을 기준으로 판단해 볼 때, SO$_2$에 대한 저항성은 현사시가 가장 높은 것으로 판단된다.

  • 1. 일복하의 투광율이 높을수록 엽면적은 감소되고 증산량은 증가되었으며 기공의 수는 차이가 없었으니 기공의 크기는 현저히 감소되었다. 2. 일복하의 투과율을 높일수록 전체엽록소 및 엽록소 a, b의 함량이 감소되었고 a/b율은 증가되었으며 carotenoid 함량도 감소되었는데 최대 광합성을 가져오는 엽록소함량은 온도에 관계없이 6월말 조사에서는 2.1mg이었고 8월말 조사에서는 1.8mg이었다.

Bioaccumulation Patterns and Ecophysiological Responses of Monochoria korsakowi Exposed to Cadmium

  • We have examined the bioaccumulation patterns and the ecophysiological responses (photosynthetic pigment and total antioxidative capacity) of Monochoria korsakowi exposed to various cadmium concentrations, one of major environmental pollutants. Cadmium ion contents in M. korsakowi increased significantly with higher cadmium concentration, and most of the accumulated cadmium was found in the root parts. Biomass of each part decreased with higher cadmium concentration. As cadmium treatment concentration was increased, chlorophyll a content was decreased, whereas chlorophyll b content was increased. However, the variations of total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were not evident. Total antioxidative capacity in the leaves of cadmium treated M. korsakowi increased greatly with higher cadmium concentration. We considered these results as indicative of the ability of M. Korsakowi plants to take up cadmium from wetlands.

Photosynthetic Activity, and Lipid and Hydrocarbon Production by Alginate-Immobilized Cells of Botryococcus in Relation to Growth Phase

  • Whole-cell immobilization of the hydrocarbon rich microalgae, Botryococcus braunii and B. protuberans, in alginate beads under air-lift batch cultures resulted in a significant increase in chlorophyll, carotenoid, dry weight, and 1ipid contents at stationary and resting growth phases, as compared to free cells. Photosynthetic activity in both the species, of Botryococcus was enhanced, relative to free cells, at any growth phase of cultures. Immobilization exerted a protective influence on ageing of the cultures as reflected by higher chlorophyll and dry weight contents. Entrapment also stabilized the chlorophyll and carotenoid contents even at stationary and resting phases as compared to free cells in both the species.

가을철 시판 시금치의 이화학적 특성 (Physicochemical Characteristics of Commercial Spinach Produced in Autumn)

  • This study was carried out to examine physicochemical characteristics of three kinds of commercial spinach produced from three areas(Gyeongbuk Yeongdeok Younghea, Gyeongnam Tongyeong Yongnam, Gyeongnam Tongyeong Gwangdo) in autumn of 2004. The length, weight, moisture, minerals, oxalic acid, chlorophyll, vitamin C, and Hunter's color values of spinach leaves and stem; were determined. Mg, Ca, Na, K, chlorophyll, and vitamin C contents of leaves were higher than those of stems. On the other hand, stem; showed higher contents in Fe, P and oxalic acid Moisture, Mg, Na, Fe, chlorophyll, and vitamin C contents in the spinach leaves from Gwangdo were higher than those from Yongnam and Younghea, but oxalic acid lower a little.

돌산갓의 Carotenoids 및 Chlorophyll 함량 (Contents of Carotenoids and Chlorophylls in Dolsan Leaf Mustard(Brassica juncea))

  • To furnish basic data for the utilization of leaf mustard as a raw material of salted and fermented vegetable food, the contents of carotenoids and chlorophylls of Dolsan Leaf Mustard(DLM) were investigated. Total carotenoid content of DLM was 4.75 mg%, and the compositions were ${\beta}-carotene(80.91%)$, lutein(13.07%), lutein epoxide(3.93%). The contents of chlorophyll a and b were 4.1 and 1.5 mg%, and leaf was 7.4- and 8.1-fold, respectively, higher than leaf stalk. The ratios of chlorophyll a/b in leaf (2.7:1) and leaf stalk(3.0:1) were similar to those of other vegetables.

관수량에 따른 왕벚나무의 생장과 생리적 특성 (Growth and Physiological Characteristics of Prunus × yedoensis Matsum. by Irrigation Level)

  • Prunus × yedoensis is a representative tree species in residential areas often used as a street tree or park tree, with its popularity due to splendid flowers in the spring. We investigated plant growth, photosynthesis, chlorophyll, and carotenoid concentrations of Prunus yedoensis at 400ml/pot, 1,000ml/pot, and 2,000ml/pot Irrigation treatments. Overall growth indices such as tree height, diameter at root collar (DRC), and total dry weight could be ranked in the decreasing order "2,000ml/pot > 1,000ml/pot > 400ml/pot.". However, 2,000ml/pot featured decreased photosynthesis and total chlorophyll carotenoid contents than 1,000ml/pot treatment after July. And also, The 1,000ml/pot treatment showed relatively high photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll contents. These results suggested that the cultivation of Prunus yedoensis under 1,000ml/pot Irrigation treatment(soil water contents 25~35%) showed the best condition in growth.

광 환경이 스트로브잣나무 묘목의 생장과 엽록소 함량에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Light Environment on Growth and Chlorophyll Contents of Pinus strobus Seedlings)

  • 스트로브잣나무(Pinus strobus)가 광환경에 따라서 생장량과 엽록소함량이 어떻게 변화하는가를 관찰하기 위해서 스트로브잣나무 1-1묘목을 대상으로 실험하였다 광도는 피음막으로 자연광 상태(1800 umo1 m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$),자연광의 75% 광도(1350 $\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$), 자연광의 50% 광도(900 $\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$), 자연광의 25% 광도(450 $\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) 4가지로 조절하였다. 이들 묘목을 각각 상주대학교 묘포장에 30cm$\times$30cm 간격으로 식재하여 10개체씩 수확하여 수고, 근원경, 신초, 물질생산량 및 엽록소 함량을 비교하였다. 수고, 근원경, 신초, 물질 생산량은 광도가 높은 실험구에서 공통적으로 가장 좋았다. 특히 물질생산량 가운데 뿌리부분이 광도가 낮아질수록 가장 민감하게 줄어들었다. 엽록소함량(a, b그리고 a + b)은 공통적으로 광도가 가장 낮은 실험구인 25%의 광도에서 제일 낮은 값을 보였다.
