TiN films were deposited onto high speed steel(SKH9) and silicon wafer by plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition(PACVD) using a TiCl4/N2/H2/Ar gas mixture. The effects of deposition temperature, R.F. power, and H2 concentration on the deposition of TiN were studied. The residual chlorine content and the microhardness of TiN films were also investigated. It was found that TiN films grew with a columnar structure of a strong (200) preferred orientation regardless of the substrate type and the deposition variables. The TiN films consisted of columnar-grains of about 50 to 100 nm in diameter. The columnar grains themselves contained much finer fibrous grains. As deposition temperature increased, the residual chlorine content decreased sharply. R. F. powder enhanced the deposition rate largely. Increasing of H2 concentration had little effect on the residual chlorine.
We measured by electrochemical method for TRC (total residual chlorine) in ocean. From the results of Au electrode used for working electrode through cyclic voltammetry test, we obtained charge in voltage ranged from 0.0V-1.0V, and analyzed correlations of charge for TRC. Reduction peak TRC was investigated to be approximately 0.65 V vs. Ag/AgCl, and in the case that salt concentrations and temperatures in ocean appeared different, charge was analyzed for being different in the same TRC. However, in the case that each condition was constant, charge was measured at highly correlations for TRC.
Electrolysis produces hypochlorous acid by using a small quantity of NaCl as electrolyte. This process maximizes the stabilization of drinking water through the control of chlorine residual concentration. This study investigated free chlorine generation by an electrolytic method using $Ti/IrO_2$ and stainless steel. The generation of free chlorine was increased with increasing hydraulic retention time, voltage, chlorine ion concentration and the number of electrodes. However, the change of pH did not affect the generation of free chlorine. There was no significant difference on the behavior of chlorine concentration between electrolytic method and NaOCl injection. In this study, the concentration of free chlorine predicted model based on power functional model was developed various under conditions. Electrolysis free chlorine generation model can be effective tool in the estimation of free chlorine generation.
It is important to predict chlorine decay with different water purification processes and distribution pipeline materials, especially because chlorine decay is in direct relationship with the stability of water quality. The degree of chlorine decay may affect the water quality at the end of the pipeline: it may produce disinfection by-products or cause unpleasant odor and taste. Sand filtrate and dual media filtrate were used as influents in this study, and cast iron (CI), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and stainless steel (SS) were used as pipeline materials. The results were analyzed via chlorine decay models by comparing the experimental and model parameters. The models were then used to estimate rechlorination time and chlorine decay time. The results indicated that water quality (e.g. organic matter and alkalinity) and pipeline materials were important factors influencing bulk decay and sand filtrate exhibited greater chlorine decay than dual media filtrate. The two-component second-order model was more applicable than the first decay model, and it enabled the estimation of chlorine decay time. These results are expected to provide the basis for modeling chlorine decay of different water purification processes and pipeline materials.
Water distribution systems (WDSs) are a representative infrastructure injecting chlorine to disinfect the pathogenic microorganisms and supplying water from sources to consumers. Also, WDSs prescribe to maintain the usual standard (0.1-4.0 mg/L) of residual chlorine. However, the user's usage pattern, water age, network shape, and type affect the hydraulic features (i.e. nodal pressure, pipe velocity) and water quality features (i.e., the residual chlorine concentration). Therefore, this study developed an optimization approach for optimizing WDSs considering water quality-hydraulic factors using Multi-objective Harmony Search (MOHS). The design cost and the system resilience were applied as the design objective functions, and the nodal pressure and the concentration of residual chlorine are used as constraints. The derived optimal designs through this approach were analyzed according to network characteristics such as the network shapes and type. These optimal designs can meet the safety of economic and water quality aspects to increase user acceptance.
UV technology is widely used in water and wastewater treatment. Many researches have been conducted on microbial disinfection and micro pollutant reduction with UV treatment. However, the study on NOM with UV has limited because low/medium pressure UV lamp is not sufficient to affect refractory organics such as NOM. Pulsed UV treatment using UV flash lamp can be operated in the pulsed mode with much greater peak intensity. The pulse duration is typically in microseconds, whereas the interval between pulses is in the order of milliseconds. The high intensity of pulsed UV would mineralize NOM itself as well as change the characteristics of NOM. Chlorine demand and DBPs formation is affected on the changed amounts and properties of NOM. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect on NOM, chlorine residual, and chlorinated DBPs formation with pulsed UV treatment.
In this study, a comparative removal of chlorine from aqueous solutions of mulberry leaf powder(MLP) and activated carbon(AC) was investigated. The chlorine removal capacities of MLP and AC were shown as a function of contact time, pH and initial chlorine concentration. Optimum contact time and removal pH value of MLP were determined as 2 hr and pH 10, respectively. Chlorine removal increased with increasing initial chlorine concentration up to 1.3g/L. Both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were suitable for describing the short-term removal of chlorine by MLP and AC. According to Freundlich adsorption isotherms, the maximum removal capacity of MLP(0.264 mg Cl$_2$/mg) was nearly two times greater than that of AC(0.56 mg Cl$_2$/mg). These results suggested that MLP might potentially be used as an alternative to traditional water treatment materials for removal of residual chlorine in drinking water or process wastewater.
The assessment on characteristics of hydraulic behavior and water quality variations of underground reservoirs of buildings were studied. Firstly, it was thought that underground reservoir capacities($m^3$) of buildings should be not determinated by the uniform and same methods but be estimated on the basis of the dwelling areas on dominated households and their residential characteristics, because these characteristics influence significantly on actual water usages and patterns of buildings. Secondly, it was likely that the average reduction rate of residual chlorine in underground reservoirs were affected from the their capacities, because the average reduction rate of residual chlorine in underground reservoirs under $1,000m^3$ was 43 percent, on the other hand, that rate of underground reservoirs over $1,000m^3$ was 60 percent. Thirdly, through the field investigation, the retention time of drinking water in underground reservoirs were in the range from 0.3 day to 3.9 day. In addition to, the average reduction rate of residual chlorine were depended largely on the retention time of drinking water. When the retention time was under 24 hours, the average reduction rate of residual chlorine was 45 percent, and in case of over 24 hours, was 49 percent. Fourth, water level in underground reservoirs was averagely varied in the range from 0.1 m to 2.65 m at the height of underground reservoirs. If considered actual height of underground reservoirs, 37.6 percent of the height of underground reservoirs was only used. Consequently, the frequency of the inflow and outflow of drinking water in underground reservoir were very increased, and had an effect on the reduction of residual chlorine. Lastly, the investigations on hydraulic structure characteristics of underground reservoirs inside showed the locations of inflow and outflow of drinking water almost were in the opposite direction. And some buildings had several baffles in the middle. Nevertheless, their installations had no beneficial for the improvement of water quality.

According to increase of consumer's desire for clean tap water, advanced treatment processes include with membrane, ozone, and granular activated carbon(GAC) were introduced. In order to evaluate the effect of advanced treatment processes for residual chlorine decay and trihalomethane(THM) formation in water distribution system, dissolved organic matter(DOC) removal of each advanced treatment process was investigated. The residual chlorine decay and THM formation using bottle tests were also evaluated. $UV_{254}$ removal in all advanced treatment was better than DOC removal. Especially, DOC by ozone treated was removed as 4% in contrast with sand filtered water, but $UV_{254}$ was removed about 17%. This result might be due to convert from hydrophobic DOC to hydrophilic DOC by ozonation. Ozone/GAC process was most effective process for DOC removal. The residual chlorine decay constants in treated water by sand filtration, ozonation, GAC adsorption, and ozone/GAC processes were 0.0230, 0.0307, 0.0117 and 0.0098 $hr^{-1}$, respectively. The sand filtered water was produced 81.8 ${\mu}g/L$ of THM after 190 hours of reaction time, as the treated water by ozone, GAC, and Ozone/GAC was less produced 6.0, 26.2, 30.3% in contrast with sand filtered water, respectively. Consequently, the durability of residual chlorine and reduction of THM formation were improved by advanced treatment processes.

The purpose of this study is to predict residual chlorine in order to maintain stable residual chlorine concentration in sedimentation basin by using artificial intelligence algorithms in water treatment process employing pre-chlorination. Available water quantity and quality data are collected and analyzed statistically to apply into mathematical multiple regression and artificial intelligence models including multi-layer perceptron neural network, random forest, long short term memory (LSTM) algorithms. Water temperature, turbidity, pH, conductivity, flow rate, alkalinity and pre-chlorination dosage data are used as the input parameters to develop prediction models. As results, it is presented that the random forest algorithm shows the most moderate prediction result among four cases, which are long short term memory, multi-layer perceptron, multiple regression including random forest. Especially, it is result that the multiple regression model can not represent the residual chlorine with the input parameters which varies independently with seasonal change, numerical scale and dimension difference between quantity and quality. For this reason, random forest model is more appropriate for predict water qualities than other algorithms, which is classified into decision tree type algorithm. Also, it is expected that real time prediction by artificial intelligence models can play role of the stable operation of residual chlorine in water treatment plant including pre-chlorination process.
