Efficiency Comparison between Chlorine and Chlorine Dioxide to Control Bacterial Regrowth in Water Distribution System

  • This study investigated the inactivation of the total coliform, an indicator organism in chlorine and chlorine in order to control microbial regrowth for water distribution systems and select an appropriate disinfection strategy for drinking water systems. The disinfection effects of chlorine and chlorine dioxide with regard to the dosage of disinfectant, contact time and DOC was investigated experimentally. In spite of the consistency of chlorine residuals at approximately 0.2 mg/l, bacteria regrowth was detected in the distribution system and it was confirmed by the scanning electron microscope results. The influence of organic carbon change on the killing effect of chlorine dioxide was strong.

  • In this study, chlorine modeling technique based on fuzzy system is proposed to reduce the carcinogenic substance and decide the optimal chlorine injection rate, which is affected by chlorine evaporation rate in sedimentation basin according to detention time, weather and water quality. The additional chlorine meter is installed in the inlet part of sedimentation to reduce the feedback time and implement cascade control, which leads to maintaining the residual chlorine concentration decided by fuzzy rule. It helps to take a preemptive action about long time delay, the characteristics of the disinfection process, and reduce the variation of residual chlorine rate by 7.3 times and the chlorine consumption by 40,000 dollars. It made a significant contribution to supply hygienically safe drinking water.

Effect of Aqueous Chlorine Dioxide Treatment on the Microbial Growth and Qualities of Strawberries During Storage

  • Effect of aqueous chlorine dioxide treatment on the microbial growth and quality changes of strawberries during storage was examined. Strawberries were treated with 5, 10, and 50 ppm of chlorine dioxide solution, and stored at $4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Total aerobic bacteria in strawberries treated at 50 ppm of chlorine dioxide were increased from 1.40 to 2.10 log CFU/g after 7 days, while increasing in the control from 2.75 to 4.32 log CFU/g. Yeasts and molds in strawberries treated at 50 ppm of chlorine dioxide were increased from 1.10 to 1.97 log CFU/g after 7 days, while the control was increased from 2.55 to 4.50 log CFU/g. The pH and titratable acidity of strawberries were not significantly different among treatments. Sensory evaluation results showed that chlorine dioxide-treated strawberries had better sensory scores than the control. These results indicate that chlorine dioxide treatment could be useful in improving the microbial safety and qualities of strawberries during storage.

  • Electrolysis produces hypochlorous acid by using a small quantity of NaCl as electrolyte. This process maximizes the stabilization of drinking water through the control of chlorine residual concentration. This study investigated free chlorine generation by an electrolytic method using $Ti/IrO_2$ and stainless steel. The generation of free chlorine was increased with increasing hydraulic retention time, voltage, chlorine ion concentration and the number of electrodes. However, the change of pH did not affect the generation of free chlorine. There was no significant difference on the behavior of chlorine concentration between electrolytic method and NaOCl injection. In this study, the concentration of free chlorine predicted model based on power functional model was developed various under conditions. Electrolysis free chlorine generation model can be effective tool in the estimation of free chlorine generation.

  • Chlorine inhibition on the denitrifing activity of activated sludge treating dairy wastewater was investigated in this study. Filamentous bulking was caused artificially by a sudden load of feed and monitored by measuring sludge volume index. In cases of the activated sludge and bulking sludge which were contacted with chlorine as $7.5\;mgCl_2/gVSS/day$ for bulking control, the decreases of specific denitrification of $32.2{\sim}40.4%\;and\;43.5{\sim}46.5%$ were shown in comparison to the control group which was not reacted with chlorine, respectively. In continuous operation, it was observed that the removal efficiency of total nitrogen was more susceptible to chlorine than the removal efficiency of total phosphorus.

  • Effect of removal time of mulched polyethylene film on the chlorine content of toP soil and on the chlorine absorption by burley tobacco Plants was investigated under the field condition in 1986 and 1987. Treatment consisted of 4 removal times (from 30 to 75 days after transplanting with IS days interval) and control (no removal). The chlorine content of top Boll at 15 days after removal of mulched polyethylene film(MPF) lowered temporarily, and the decrement of chlorine content of top soil was closely related to the sum of rainfalls after removal of MPF. The chlorine was accumulated much in upper leaves when the MPF being removed early, while the chlorine was accumulated much in lower loaves when the MPF being removed late, relatively. However, the removal of MPF had no effect on the chlorine content of whole leaf. The yield decreased with removal of MPF during growing period.

  • Chlorine dioxide is being used to control THMs formation or taste & odor in water treatment plant. Recently, some operators or academic circles doubted the effectiveness of stabilized chlorine dioxide which is presumed as a liquid form of chlorine dioxide. In this study, we investigated components which consist of stabilized chlorine dioxide in terms of chlorine dioxide and chlorite. Two analytical methods used in this study are UV method and Iodometric method. Iodometric method is recommended by Korean EPA to check the purity of stabilized chlorine dioxide. The samples of stabilized chlorine dioxide from four water treatments were investigated and compared with that produced from chlorine dioxide generator on-site. This study demonstrated that the component of stabilized chlorine dioxide was overwhelmingly chlorite (${ClO_2}^-$) not chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) by UV method. It was also proved that Iodometric method (2nd method) recommended by Korean EPA could not differentiate between $ClO_2$ and ${ClO_2}^-$. Iodometric method (2nd method) recommended by Korean EPA should be revised accordingly to measure chlorine dioxide properly.

Statistical Analysis of Chlorine Residual in Korean Drinking Water (국내정수장의 잔류염소농도에 대한 조사연구)

  • Maintaining adequate chlorine residual is crucial in water treatment facilities, Treatment technique, newly promulgated regulation, requires sufficient disinfection in order to control more resistant microorganisms such as Viruses and Giardia lamblia. Each water treatment plant should report various water qualities including chlorine residual and disinfection by-products, thus plenty of data has been generated. Even though statistical analysis using these data are forced to investigate the status and effect of water qualities in water facilities very few researches have been performed in korea. This study performed statistical analysis of chlorine residual during three years in Korean drinking water. The average chlorine residual concentrations were 0.701mg/L, 0.738mg/L, 0.763mg/L in 2002, 2003, 2004, respectively. Monthly variations of chlorine residual was not significant. ANOVA result showed that yearly variance of chlorine residual is different in only less than $5000m^3/day$ of water treatment capacity. The statistical analysis can help government to establish new regulation with scientific basis.

Control of Generation of Chlorine Dioxide Gas Using Polymer Hydrogels Containing Acetic Acid (아세트산이 탑재된 고분자 수화젤을 이용한 이산화염소 기체의 발생 제어)

  • Chlorine dioxide gas has an excellent ability for sterilization and deodorization, and is harmless to humans. However, it is very unstable and explosive as it is highly concentrated, thus its use in the air clean fields has been limited. Therefore, there is need to control chlorine dioxide gas at a low concentration for a long time. Chlorine dioxide gas could be produced slowly and sustainedly since the release of acetic acid from the polymer hydrogels delayed the reaction between acetic acid and sodium chlorite. In addition, as the amount of both acetic acid sodium chlorite loaded within the hydrogel and on the membrane increased, respectively, the generation amount of chlorine dioxide gas increased. The result shows that the use of polymer hydrogels has the potential to control the generation of chlorine dioxide gas.

Effect of Chlorine on PAC Adsorption to Remove Odor Compound in Natural Water (자연수중 이취미 물질의 분말활성탄 흡착시 염소의 영향)

  • Powdered activated carbon(PAC) is widely used to control 2-MIB와 geosmin causing earthy-musty odor in water supplies. It was known that chlorine is one of the chemicals often come into contact with activated carbon. But activated carbon react with chlorine and surface oxide accumulate on carbon surface. As result, adsorption capacity of activated carbon is reduced. To investigate the effect of chlorine on the PAC's ability to adsorb 2-MIB and Geosmin, a series of experiments was carried out to show (1) the effect of aqueous chlorine doses on the ability of PAC to adsorb 2-MIB and Geosmin from Lake Heodong water. (2) the effect of delaying the chlorine addition after PAC had been added (to simulate the effect of using an alternative point of chlorine addition). As a result of experiment, as chlorine dose increased correspondingly decreased the capacity of activated carbon to adsorb 2-MIB and geosmin. Even though previously adsorbed 2-MIB and geosmin released, as result of the application of delaying the chlorine adding was more beneficial than simultaneous adding chlorine with PAC.
