  • The purpose of this study is to estimate Chloride Attack Resistibility and mechanical properties of quaternary concrete adding fly ash, blast-furnace slag, and silica fume. Compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, chloride migration coefficient, charge passed from Rapid chloride penetration test(RCPT), and immersion testing in 3% NaCl are tested. Chloride migration coefficient and charge passed of quaternary concrete measured $0.032{\times}10^{-12}m^2/sec$ and 650 coulomb at 17 weeks, which are in a permitted limit. Also in immersion test, depth of chloride penetration and maximum chloride ion of quaternary concrete measured 3.7 mm and $10.211kg/m^3$ respectively. From the results, quaternary concrete adding fly ash, blast-furnace slag, and silica fume denotes improvement of mechanical properties and chloride attack resistibility.

  • The properties of concrete damaged by fire change according to the temperature. Diffusion coefficient of chloride ion also can change which affect the life expectation under salt circumstance. Diffusion coefficient was measured by NT BUILD 492 using the concrete specimen damaged by high temperature. FEM analysis was performed to predict the life expectancy which can help to diagnose the concrete diagnose and to design maintenance strategy.

  • The use of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) from steel industries waste is showing perspective application in civil engineering as partial substitute to cement. Use of such waste conserves natural resources and minimizes the space required for landfill. The GGBFS used in the present work is of ultra fine size and hence serves as micro filler. In this paper strength and durability characteristics of ultra fine slag based high strength concrete (HSC) (with a characteristic compressive strength of 50 MPa) were studied. Cement was replaced with ultra fine slag in different percentages of 5, 10, and 15% to study the compressive strength, porosity, resistances against sulfate attack, sorptivity and chloride ion penetration. The experiments to study compressive strength were conducted for different ages of concrete such as 7, 28, 56, and 90 days. From the detailed investigations with 16 mix combinations, 10% ultra fine slag give better results in terms of strength and durability characteristics.

  • Metakaolin is a cementitious material for producing high-strength concrete. This material is now used as substitute for silica-fume. In this paper, we tested the compressive strength of concrete according to the substitute ratio of metakaolin, silica-fume. And we did the durability test such as chloride ion diffusion and chemical attack. In the compressive strength test, the result shows that $10\%$ substitute of metakaolin & silica-fume for binder is optimum. In the chloride ion diffusion test, according to the increase of substitute of metakaolin & silica-fume for binder, the diffusion coefficient is more reduced. And in the chemical attack test, according to the increase of substitute, the resistance is more excellent. In the durability test, we recognized that metakaolin is able to used as a substitute for silica-fume.

  • Reinforced-concrete structures built on the seashore or in seawater are damaged from flying-salt of chloride ion in the seawater. Recently many bridges are being constructed under marine enviornment and there are many serious problems of chlofide attack owing to penetration of chloride ion. And up to now it has not only so little a seatch about damage from flying-salt and seawater but also little systematic study outcome about steel corrosion. In this study we investigate the concrete deterioration and steel corrosion of RC bridges on the seashore. Environmental conditions are investigated, and compressive strength, carbonation depth and steel-corrosion degree are measured.

In the other durability test, the concrete using metakaolin is also compared with those of the portland cement concrete and silica fume concrete. • Ten types of steel bars having different Cr contents were embedded in concretes with chloride ion contents of 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, and $2.4kg/m^3$ to fabricate specimens assuming such deteriorative environments. After being carbonated to the reinforcement level, these concretes were subjected to corrosion-accelerating cycles of heating/cooling and drying/wetting. The time-related changes in the corrosion area and corrosion loss of the Cr-bearing rebars were then measured to investigate their corrosion resistance. The results revealed that in a deteriorative environment prone to both carbonation and chloride attack, corrosion resistance was evident with a Cr content of 7% or more and 9% or more in concretes with chloride ion contents of 1.2 and $2.4kg/m^3$, respectively.

  • One of the principal causes of the deterioation of coastal concrete structures is the corrosion of reinforcing steel induced by the attack of chloride ions. An experimental study was performed to investigate the distribution of concentration of chloride ions in a coastal concrete structure and to measure the half-cell potential of embedded steel by using the copper-copper sulfate reference electrode. Quantitative analysis showed that the concentration of chloride ion in the aqueous phase near the surface of embedded steel exceeded a threshold value for corrosion, 0.05% by weight in concrete. The absolute value of half-cell potential at some members of embedded steel was measured to be higher than 350mV, indicating that the probability of corrosion is more than 90%. The prediction on corrosion based on the experimental measurements was confirmed by the observation of corrosion on the surface of steel bars in the concrete core taken out of the concrete structure.

  • To predict service life of concrete structures exposed to chloride attack, surface chloride concentration, diffusion coefficient of chloride ion, and chloride corrosion threshold value in concrete, are used as important factors. Of these, as the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion for concrete is strongly influenced by concrete quality and environmental conditions of structures and may significantly change the service life of structures, it is considered as the most important factor for service life prediction. The qualitative factors affecting the penetration and diffusion of chloride ion into concrete are water-cement (W/C) ratio, age, curing conditions, chloride ion concentration of given environment, wet and dry conditions, etc. In this paper the influence of W/C ratio and curing conditions on the diffusion characteristics of chloride ion in concrete was investigated through the chloride ion diffusion test. In the test, the voltages passing through the diffusion cell were measured by accelerated test method using potential difference, and then with the consideration of IR drop ratio the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion for concrete with different W/C ratios were estimated by Andrade's model. Furthermore, under different curing conditions formulas for the estimation of the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion have been proposed by the regression analysis considering the effect of W/C ratio and age.

  • The purpose of this study evaluates possibilities of waste phosphogypsum into concerts by steam curing admixture. The waste phosphogypsum is made use of 4 forms(Dehydrate, $\beta$-Hemihydrate, III-Anhydrite and II-Anhydrite) which were changed to in low temperature of calcination. The penetration depth and compressive strength of cement mortar are investigated to evaluate the chloride ion and carbonation resistance. As a result, chloride ion and carbonation resistance of cement mortar admixed with waste phosphogypsum are more excellent than cement mortar contained OPC alone. The internal pores of cement mortar are decreased by using waste phosphogypsum, because the hydrates of ettringite which is denesified in structure is much formed in early ages at steam curing. These densified effect is concluded with improving the resistance to attack of cement mortar including waste phospogypsum.
