  • Chloric acid is a toxic chemical and the risk of facility handling chloric acid was assessed from the list of accident scenario to provide countermeasure to keep the vicinity safe. Accident scenarios were listed by using MSDS and process safety information. The scenarios having effect to the off-site were selected and assessed further according to guideline provided by Korea government. Worst case and alternative scenarios including other interested scenarios were evaluated using ALOHA. Each evaluated scenario was assessed further considering countermeasures. The results showed that the facility handling chloric acid is safe enough and needed no further protections at the moment.

  • PLA, PGA and PLGA films were treated with chloric acid mixture solution [70% perchloric acid (HClO$_4$)/potassium chlorate (KClO$_3$) aq. saturated solution, 3 : 2] to increase surface wettability and thus cell compatibility. The surface-treated PLA, PGA, and PLGA films were characterized by the measurement of water contact angle, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Surface wettability of chloric acid-treated PLA, PGA, and PLGA film surfaces was gradually increased with increase of treatment time. Unlike EtOH pre-treatment, chloric acid-treated polymer films maintain hydrophilic surface after drying. In cell adhesion test, fibroblasts were cultured on the chloric acid-treated film surfaces for 1 and 2 days. As the surface wettability increased, the cell adhesion on the surface were increased. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the surface wettability of polymer plays an important role for cell adhesion and proliferation behavior.

  • In order to investigate the crystallization in silk fibroin induced by acid treatment and its photo-yellowing reduction effect. silk fibroin were immersed in PH 3.5~4.0 sulfuric acid and 0.01N hydro-chloric acid at 2$0^{\circ}C$, and the changes of crystallinity were measured by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction. Yellowness index caused by UV irradiation were also observed. The results are as follows : 1. ${\beta}$-form transition occurs when the silk fibroin are immersed at 2$0^{\circ}C$ in pH 3.5~4.0 sulfuric acid and 0.01N hydro-chloric acid. Formation of new hydrogenbond in molecules on the amorphous region induced ${\beta}$-form structure, and increased crystallinity. 2. Crystallization owing to $\beta$-form transition reduced the initial yellowness index by ultraviolet irradiation.

  • We modified polymer surfaces, polyethylene, polystyrene and polyester, to improve cellcompatibility. For surface modification of the polymers, we used various surface treatment methods; physicochemical oxidation methods such as plasma discharge, corona discharge, sulfuric acid and chloric acid treatments, and biological methods such as adsorption of plasma protein and fibronectin onto the polymer surfaces. The treated polymer surfaces were characterized by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis ( ESCA ). The physicochemically treated polymers showed different surface chemical structures depending on the treated methods. The sulfuric acid-treated surfaces showed greater carboxyl groups than those of plasma- or corona- treated surfaces, while the chloric acid-treated one showed high density of hydroxyl group on the surface. By the biological treatments, the surfaces were uniformly coated with proteins. The fibronectin adsorbed on the surface seems to have unique properties for cell binding.

  • Chinese Hamster Ovary( CHO) cells were cultured on the surface-modified polymers described in the previous study( "Polymer Surfaces for Cell Adhesion. 1. Surface Modification of Polymers and ESCA Analysis, " J. of KOSOMBE, Vol. 10, No. 1, 43-51, 1989). Among the physicochemical treatment methods. the chloric acid treatment was found to be the best method of rendering the polymer surfaces adhesive for CHO cells probably due to the high density of hydroxyl groups on the surface. Among the biological methods, the fibronectin treatment was best for CHO cell-compatibility probably due to specific active sites existed on the tell-binding domains of the fibronectin structure. When we compare the cell-compatibility of the chloric acid - and the fibronectin -treated PET surfaces, the number of cells attached on the surfaces were increased by 460.5 % and 559.0 % and, respectively, after 32 hr CHO cell culture, compared to that of untreated PET.eated PET.

  • We have treated polymer surfaces such as polyethylene, polystyrene and polyester by various physicochemical and biological surface modification methods to be suitable for cell adhesion. The physicochemical methods we used were $O_2$ plasma discharge, corona discharge, sulfuric acid and chloric acid treatments. For the biological treatments, blood proteins such as plasma protein, serum protein and fibronectin were adsorbed onto the polymer surfaces. Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells were cultured on the surface-modified polymers and the cell-compatibility of those surfaces were compared. The chloric acid and fibronectin treatments were found to be the best methods of rendering the polymer surfaces adhesive for CHO cells.

  • Among the components of redox flow battery (RFB), the electrode serves as a diffusion layer of an electrolyte and a path for electrons and also is a major component that directly affects the RFB performance. In this paper, chloric/sulfuric mixed acidwas used as a supporting electrolyte in RFB system with Fe2+/Fe3+ and V2+/V3+ as redox couple. The optimum electrode and activation temperature were suggested by comparing the capacity, coulombic efficiency and energy efficiency according to the electrode type and activation temperature. In the RFB single cell evaluation using 5 types of carbon electrodes used in the experiments, all of them showed close to the theoretical capacity to retain the reliability of the evaluation results. GFD4EA showed relatively excellent energy efficiency and charge/discharge capacity. In order to investigate the electrochemical performance according to the activation temperature, GFD4EA electrode was activated by heat treatment at different temperatures of 400, 450, 500, 600 and 700 ℃ under an air atmosphere. Changes in physical properties before and after the activation were observed using electrode mass retention, scanning electron microscope (SEM), XPS analysis, and electrochemical performance was compared by conducting RFB single evaluation using electrodes activated at each temperature given above.

  • This technology is a water leak repair technology using composite materials of concrete structures that block leakage of structures by injecting rapid microcement into the face of underground concrete to block water and injecting flexible glycidylacrylate. Rapid micro cement system repair materials are mixed with fine fibers to improve the flexural sensitivity of the material and to form a layer that blocks stabilized water at the back of the structure by allowing rapid and tight spatial filling during injection with high cohesion The glycidylacrylate repair material can control the expansion rate, and the external stress also has the characteristic that the form of the material is not destroyed or separated, which can also be applied to vibrating induced structures that produce repetitive fatigue loads, and has an effective durability in saline, alkali, acid (chloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid).
