  • The objective of this study was to construct and assess the applicability of the EFDC model for Saemangeum Reservoir as a 3D hydrodynamic and water quality modeling tool that is necessary for the effective management of water quality and establishment of conservation measures. The model grids for both reservoir system only and reservoir-ocean system were created using the most recent survey data to compare the effects of different downstream boundary conditions. The model was applied for the simulations of temperature, salinity, water quality variables including chemical oxygen demand (COD), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), phosphorus and nitrogen species and algal biomass, and validated using the field data obtained in 2008. Although the model reasonably represented the temporal and spatial variations of the state variables in the reservoir with limited boundary forcing data, the salinity level was underestimated in the middle and upstream of the reservoir when the flow data were used at downstream boundaries; Sinsi and Garyuk Gates. In turn, the error caused to increase the bias of water quality simulations, and inaccurate simulation of density flow regime of river inflow during flood events. It is likely because of the loss of momentum of sea water intrusion at downstream boundaries. In contrast to flow boundary conditions, the mixing between sea water and freshwater was well reproduced when open water boundary condition was applied. Thus, it is required to improve the downstream boundary conditions that can accommodate the real operations of the sluice gates.

  • Simple material budget models were developed to predict the spring season (March ~ May) water quality for a river-type reservoir Paldang, in the Republic of Korea. These models are available at mixed water bodies whose light intensity is negligible at the bottom. The calculated data from the models fit quite well with field data collected for 30 years, from 1988 to 2017. The apparent settling velocity of total phosphorus was estimated to be $110m\;d^{-1}$. The critical hydraulic load that determines the usability of phosphorus for algal production appeared to be about $2.0m\;d^{-1}$. When a hydraulic load was larger than the critical value, the concentrations of chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ ($Chl.{\alpha}$), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and 5-day biochemical oxygen demand BOD in the reservoir water became insensitive to internal algal reactions. The model analysis showed that the allochthonous COD continued to increase while the allochthonous BOD slightly decreased after 1999. The decrease of allochthonous BOD is due to the expansion of sewage and wastewater treatment plants in the watershed. The increase of allochthonous COD seems to result from the increase in anthropogenic non-point sources as well as the increase in the discharge of natural organic matters due to climate change. Organic matter of algal origin continued to increase until the mid-2000s, but recently it has decreased as the phosphorus concentration has decreased. The COD and BOD of algal origin increased from 35 % and 27 % during 1988 ~ 1994 to 43 % and 40 % during 2000 ~ 2010, respectively, and then decreased to 25 % and 28 % during 2011 ~ 2017.

  • The summer distribution of $Cha-{alpha}$ and physical processes for simulating outbreak region of red tide were estimated by the Eco-Hydrodynamic model in Chinhae Bay. As a result of simulation of surface residual currents, the southward flow come in contact with the northward flow at the inlet and western part of bay in case of windlessness and below wind velocity 2 m/sec. As wind velocity increases, the velocity and direction of currents were fairly shifted. The predicted concentration of $Cha-{alpha}$ exceeded 20 mg/㎥ in Masan and Haengam Bays, and most regions were over 10 mg/㎥, which meant the possibility of red tide outbreak. From the results of the contributed physical processes to $Cha-{alpha}$, accumulation sites were distributed at the northern part of Kadok channel, around the Chilcheon island, the western part of Kajo island and some area of Chindong Bay. On the other hand, inner parts of the study area such as Masan Bay were estimated as the sites of strong algal activities. Masan and Haengam Bay are considered as the initial outbreak region of red tide by the modeling and observed data, and then red tide expanded to other areas such as physical accumulation region and western inner bay, as depending on environmental variation. The increase of wind velocity led to decrease of $Cha-{alpha}$ and enlargement of accumulation region. The variation of intensity of radiation and sunshine duration caused to rapidly fluctuation of $Cha-{alpha}$: however, it was not largely affected by the variation of pollutant loads from the land only.

  • The uses of multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are increasing to support a sustainable management of large dam reservoirs in Korea. Any modeling study requires selection of a proper spatial dimension of the model based on the characteristics of spatial variability of concerned simulation variables. For example, a laterally averaged two-dimensional (2D) model, which has been widely used in many large dam reservoirs in Korea, assumes that the lateral variations of hydrodynamic and water quality variables are negligible. However, there has been limited studies to give a justification of the assumption. The objectives of this study were to present the characteristics of spatial variations of water quality variables through intensive field monitoring in Daechung Reservoir, and provide information on a proper spatial dimension for different water quality parameters. The monitoring results showed that the lateral variations of water temperature are marginal, but those of DO, pH, and conductivity could be significant depending on the hydrological conditions and local algal biomass. In particular, the phytoplankton (Chl-a) and nutrient concentrations showed a significant lateral variation at R2 (Daejeongri) during low flow periods in 2008 possibly because of slow lateral mixing of tributary inflow from So-oak Stream and wind driven patchiness.

  • Agricultural reservoirs in Korea have been recognized as an emerging resource for recreational and cultural activities for residents. However, most of the reservoirs are eutrophic and showing high level of contamination with nuisance algal bloom and offensive odor during the summer. For better management and restoration of the reservoirs' water quality, scientific modeling approaches could be used to diagnose the problems and evaluate the efficacy of alternative control measures. The objectives of this study were to validate the performance of a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic and water quality model (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code, EFDC) for a eutrophic agricultural reservoir and assess the effect of bypassing of the effluent from a wastewater treatment plant on the reservoir water quality. The 3D model successfully simulated the temporal variations of water temperature, DO, TOC, nitrogen and phosphorus species and Chl-a observed in 2014 and also captured their spatial heterogeneity in the reservoir. The simulation results indicated that the point source bypassing may reduce the T-N and T-P concentrations of the reservoir by 6.6 ~ 8.2 %, and 1.7 ~ 16.8 %, respectively. The bypassing, however, showed a marginal effect on the control of TOC due to the increased algal biomass associated with the increased water retention time after bypassing as well as the lower TOC level of the effluent compared to the ambient reservoir water.

  • This study was aimed to assess the effects of additional installation of two different types of weirs, one is a curtain-type weir and another is a submerged-type weir, on the control of algal growth in Daechung Reservoir. A two-dimensional(2D) coupled hydrodynamic and eutrophication model that can accommodate vertical movement of the curtain weir following the water surface variations was verified using field data obtained in two distinctive hydrological years; dry(2008) and wet(2010). The model adequately simulated the temporal and spatial variations of water temperature, nutrients and algal(Chl-a) concentrations during the periods. The effectiveness of curtain weir on the control of algal bloom was evaluated by applying the model to 2001(dry year) and 2010 assuming 6 different scenarios according to installation locations. The curtain weirs that already installed at 3, 5, 7 sites(scenario C-2) showed significant effect on the control of algal growth in the reservoir; the reduction rates of algal concentration were placed in the range of 7.5~31.5% and 9.1~44.9% for 2001 and 2010, respectively. However the simulation results revealed that additional installation of curtain weirs(scenario C-3~C-6) in the bay area (choosori) have marginal effect. The effectiveness of submerged weir was evaluated against 2010 assuming 7 different scenarios according to installation locations, but all scenarios(S-1~S-7) showed neglectable or negative effect on the control of algal growth.

  • Algal blooms not only destroy fish habitats but also diminish biological diversity of ecosystem which results into water quality deterioration of 4 major rivers in South Korea. The relationship between algal bloom and environmental factors had been analyzed through the cross-correlation function between concentration of chlorophyll a and other environmental factors. However, time series of cross-correlations can be affected by the stochastic structure such auto-correlated feature of other controllers. In order to remove external effect in the correlation analysis, the pre-whitening procedure was implemented into the cross correlation analysis. The modeling process is consisted of a series of procedure (e.g., model identification, parameter estimation, and diagnostic checking of selected models). This study provides the exclusive correlation relationship between algae concentration and other environmental factors. The difference between the conventional correlation using raw data and that of pre-whitened series was discussed. The process implemented in this paper is useful not only to identify exclusive environmental variables to model Chl-a concentration but also in further extensive application to configure causality in the environment.
