A study on consumer behavior for mushrooms by consumers of Korea, China and Japan (한국, 중국, 일본소비자를 대상으로한 버섯의 이용실태조사)

  • The mushroom production is rapidly growing worldwide and mushroom present a great potential in agricultural promotion in Korea. Many researches have been done on the cultivation, disease control and breeding of mushrooms over last 20 years. The researches, on the other hand, on the utilization and processing of mushrooms and comparatively poor. A survey on consumer behavior of Korean, Chinese and Japanese consumers on mushrooms procurement and consumption was carried out. The main purchasing place for mushrooms by Korean and Japanese consumers was mart while the conventional market was the main purchasing place for Chinese consumers. Chinese and Japanese consumers had better recognition on processed mushroom products compared to Korean consumers. Chinese and Japanese consumers bought pickled mushrooms while Korean consumers were experienced in tea products made of mushrooms. The most popular method for cooking mushrooms by all the three country's consumers is saute.

Identification and Characteristics of Mushrooms Grown with Vegetables Cultivated in the Greenhouse (온실 내 재배 채소와 함께 발생한 버섯의 동정 및 특성)

  • Unusual mushrooms were observed in the greenhouses of vegetables Chinese chive, cucumber, melon and Korean dandelion in four locations of Korea in 2012. The mushrooms usually grew with the vegetables cultivated on beds in the greenhouses. Occurrence aspects of the mushrooms in the greenhouses and effect of the mushrooms on growth and quality of the vegetables were investigated. Mushroom samples were collected from the beds in the greenhouses and identified based on their morphological characteristics. The mushroom samples collected from the greenhouse of Chinese chive were identified as Coprinus aokii, those from the greenhouse of cucumber as Cristinia eichleri and Coprinus sp., those from the greenhouse of melon as Leucocoprinus cretaceous, Panaeolus fimicola and Conocybe sp., and those from the greenhouse of Korean dandelion as Conocybe rickenii f. tetrasporique. Out of the seven mushrooms identified, L. cretaceus, C. rickenii and C. eichleri were first found in Korea. The investigation results revealed that the mushrooms were originated from compost or soil used in the beds, and showed that C. aokii caused sooty mold on leaves of Chinese chive, and C. rickenii f. tetrasporique hindered growth of Korean dandelion and caused sooty mold on leaves of the plant. The other mushrooms had no effect on growth and quality of the vegetables.

A Survey of Termitomyces (Lyophyllaceae, Agaricales), Including a New Species, from a Subtropical Forest in Xishuangbanna, China

  • A survey of mushrooms was conducted in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China, in the rainy season (May to October) of 2012, 2013, and 2014, during which 16 specimens of Termitomyces were collected. Preliminary macro- and micro-characteristics, together with ITS sequence data, showed that four of the specimens belonged to a new species (Termitomyces fragilis), while the other 12 belonged to T. aurantiacus, T. eurrhizus, T. globules, T. microcarpus, and T. bulborhizus. In this paper, T. fragilis is introduced as a species new to science based on morphological characterization and phylogenetic analyses. Macro- and micro- morphological descriptions, color photographs and line drawings of the new species, and a phylogenetic tree to show the placement of the new species are provided. T. fragilis is then compared with other closely related taxa in the genus Termitomyces.

Identification of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Markers in the Laccase Gene of Shiitake Mushrooms (Lentinula edodes)

  • We identified single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in the laccase gene to establish a line-diagnostic system for shiitake mushrooms. A total of 89 fungal isolates representing four lines, including Korean registered, Korean wild type, Chinese, and Japanese lines, were analyzed. The results suggest that SNP markers in the laccase gene can be useful for line typing in shiitake mushrooms.

Cytoprotective effect of polysaccharide isolated from different mushrooms against 7-ketocholesterol induced damage in mouse liver cell line (BNL CL. 2)

  • Cytoprotective ability of polysaccharides isolated from different edible mushrooms was investigated on the 7-ketocholesterol-induced damaged cell line. Polysaccharide extracts from six different edible mushrooms-Flammulina velutipes, Peurotus ostreatus, Lentinus edodes, Agrocybe aegerita, Agaricus blazei, and Cordyceps militaris- were prepared by hot water extraction and alcohol precipitation. Cytoprotective ability was evaluated by measuring the viable cells of the normal embryonic liver cell line (BNL CL. 2) in the presence of 7-ketocholesterol. At $80\;{\mu}g/mL$ of 7-ketocholesterol, cytotoxicity was very high with a loss of 98% of viable cells after 20 h of incubation. With the addition of $200\;{\mu}g/mL$ of each polysaccharide isolate to the cell line containing $80\;{\mu}g/mL$ of 7-ketocholesterol, polysaccharide isolates from both Flammulina velutipes and Peurotus ostreatus could significantly inhibit the 7-ketochoelsterol-induced cytotoxicity in the cells. But other polysaccharide isolates were not effective in inhibiting cell damage caused by the oxLDL-induced cytotoxicity.

Antioxidant Activity and Inhibitive Effects on Human Leukemia Cells of Edible Mushrooms Extracts (식용버섯 추출물의 항산화 활성 및 혈액암세포에 대한 저해효과)

  • The effect of 12 edible mushroom species on the antioxidant and cytotoxicity on cancer cells were studied Methanol extract of Lyophyllum ulmarium, Cordyceps militaris and Sarcodon aspratus showed $30\~60\%$ DPPH radical scavenging activity and $39\~53\%$ protective effects against the cytotoxicity of $B_2O_2$. Methanol extracts of Sarcodon aspratus, Lyophyllum ulmarium, Cordyceps militaris, Agaricus blazei and Ganoderma lucidum revealed high inhibitive activities in cytotoxicity on human leukemia tells such as promyelocytic leukemia cell (HL60) and histiocytic lymphoma cell (U937). Highest toxicity was observed against HL60 cells in Sarcodon aspratus methanol extract showing $70.5\%$ inhibition at 1mg/mL whereas Cordyceps militaris methanol extract showed $81.5\%$ inhibition against U937 cells. Most water extracts of edible mushrooms exhibited the lowest effect against HL60 and U937 cells compared to methanol extract. These extract did not show cytotoxic effects against human lymphocyte. Results revealed 5 kinds of edible murshroom (Cordyceps militaris, Agaricus blaxei, Lyophyllum ulmarium, Ganoderma lucidum and Sarcodon aspratus) have strong antioxidative and in vitro anticancer efforts.

Comparison of the physiological activities of Korean and Chinese Auricularia auricula and Tremella fuciformis extracts prepared with various solvents (한국 및 중국산 목이 및 흰목이의 추출용매에 따른 생리활성 성분 비교)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological activities of hot-water and 70% ethanol extracts of three edible mushroom species (Auricularia auricula, Tremella fuciformis, and Lentinus edodes) cultivated in Korea and China. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of hot-water extracts of Korean A. auricula, T. fuciformis, and L. edodes were significantly higher than those of the Chinese counterparts (p < 0.01). However, the nitrite scavenging activities of the hot-water extracts did not significantly differ among the mushrooms regardless of their origins. Chinese A. auricula showed the highest nitrite scavenging activity in the ethanol extract. The total polyphenol contents of the ethanol extracts of the three edible mushroom species from both of the countries were higher than those of the hot-water extracts. Korean A. auricula and T. fuciformis yielded a high polyphenol content with hot-water extraction. The ${\beta}-glucan$ contents of the Chinese A. auricula, T. fuciformis, and L. edodes extracts were 20.49%, 31.43%, and 30.09%, respectively, which were higher than those of the Korean counterparts. From the results of this study, it can be deduced that the maximum yield of nutritional ingredients can be extracted by using the optimal solvent for each mushroom species. These results are expected to be useful in appreciating the difference among extracts of Korean and Chinese edible mushrooms in terms of their physiological activities in the solvents used.

Safety investigation of the moisturizing medium prepared using the Chinese oak mushroom (Lentinula edodes) based on the presence of residual pesticides, heavy metals, and radioactive materials (중국산 표고(Lentinula edodes) 보습배지의 잔류농약, 중금속 및 방사능 안전성 분석)

  • In order to provide basic data for preparing management standards and to verify the safety of the Chinese oak mushroom-derived moisturizing medium-which is synthesized and imported in large quantities-the presence of 321 residual pesticides, 7 heavy metals, and 3 radioactive materials was analyzed in the moisturizer samples. Examination of residual pesticides in seven moisturizing medium samples prepared using the Chinese oak mushroom and three domestic sawdust samples used for mushroom culture revealed the presence of cypermethrin and iprodione in three moisturizer samples, but the contents of these pesticides were below the standard limits. Zn was detected in ten samples, Cu was detected in nine samples, and Ni was detected in four samples, but their contents were below the standard limits. Pb, Cd, Cr, and Hg were not detected in any sample. No radioactive materials were detected in the samples. In addition, fruiting bodies of the oak mushroom were observed in each medium. Examination did not reveal the presence of any residual pesticides or harmful compounds. In this study, the use of the moisturizing medium prepared using the Chinese oak mushroom was found to be safe. As residual pesticides, heavy metals, and radioactivity-even in trace amounts-remain concentrated in the human body, continuous verification of the safety of hazardous substances and pollutants during the systematic cultivation and management of these mushrooms is required.
