  • The hypothesis was tested that children whose families differ in socioeconomic status(SES) and educational level differ in their rates of productive language development because they have different language-learning experiences. Naturalistic interaction between mothers and their children was video taped. Transcripts of these interactions provided the basis for estimating the growth in children's productive vocabularies and properties of maternal speech. The sixty children from age 1 to 3 were selected in Yanji, China. The results show that the high educated mothers' children grew more than the low educated mothers' children in their mean length of utterances. Properties of maternal speech that differed as a function of mother's educational level fully accounted for this difference. Implications of these findings for mechanisms of environmental influence on child development are discussed.

  • Not all parents are skilled in scaffolding their young children's numeracy learning. The present study investigated the effectiveness of a parent training program in promoting Filipino young children's number sense via card game playing at home. Participants were 161 young children and their parents; families were of a relatively low socioeconomic status. During the 10-week intervention period, parents in the experimental group received training on how to use number game cards to help their children acquire various numeracy concepts; parents in the control group received no special instructions. Children in the experimental group showed greater improvements in their performance on six number sense tasks (namely numeral identification, object counting, rote counting, missing number, numerical magnitude comparison, and addition) over the intervention period than did children in the control group. Findings of the present study suggest that providing simple training to parents on strategies for fostering their young children's number sense at home is important for giving children a good early start in basic number knowledge.

  • This study investigated how the characteristics of female international marriage immigrants, their husbands, their children, and their families affected their parenting self-efficacy, using a sample of 187 female international marriage immigrants, from China, the Philippines, or Vietnam, now living in Pusan and Gyungnam, Korea. We used questionnaires were based on the studies by Choe & Chung (2001), Shin (1997), Lee (1996), and Lee & Song (1991), and with the addition of demographic characteristics. Analysis results showed that the mother's parenting self-efficacy subscales correlated positively with mother's educational level, social support, and Korean language level; husband's educational level; and family income, and negatively with mother's depression, husband's age, and mother's acculturative stress. Multiple regressions indicated that husband's support was the strongest predictor of female international marriage immigrants' parenting self-efficacy.

  • In 2006, 41% of newly-married Korean men living in agriculture or fishery area were married to foreign wives. These foreign wives suffer social, cultural, and psychological maladjustment. They need support in understanding Korean culture & language, economic independence, and mental health. This horticultural therapy program (HT program) was practiced to help the foreign wives gain emotional stability, to help them adapt to rural society, and to help them improve the relationship with their families. The participants of this HT program were 10 foreign wives, 5 Chinese, 2 Vietnamese, 1 Japanese, 1 Thai, and 1 Filipina. Total sessions were 12, and each session lasted for two hours. This program started April and ended July in 2007. After this program, self-esteem of participants increased from 29.6 to 33.5, and stress decreased from 77.3 to 64.7. Participants also expressed sense of satisfaction and accomplishment after the program.

  • Foraminifera are protists that inhabit diverse marine environments and show high abundance and diversity. However, previous studies on foraminifera in Korea mostly focused on geological and paleoecological fields and were conducted in a limited area. Therefore, there is a high possibility for discovering new and unrecorded species. Here we describe three newly recorded foraminiferal species from the southwestern part of Jeju Island during a survey on the meiofaunal community, which belongs to three different genera (Ammobaculites, Cylindroclavulina, Saracenaria), three families (Lituolidae, Vaginulinidae, Valvulinidae), and three orders (Lituolida, Textulariida, Vaginulinida): Ammobaculites formosensis Nakamura, 1937, Cylindroclavulina bradyi (Cushman, 1911), and Saracenaria hannoverana (Franke, 1936). These species have been reported from Chinese region in the East China Sea, however this is the first report from Korean waters. Particularly, Cylindroclavulina bradyi is the first report of the genus Cylindroclavulina in Korean waters. The present study supports the diversity of foraminiferal species in Korea, and the necessity of further surveys in Korean waters.

  • The societies of HuiDaoMen, appeared upon the scene of history in the later feudal age of china, were religious secret organizations whose adherents resisted their government or powerful families. Generally, HuiDaoMens are grouped into political ones and religious ones. This distinction, however, comes from on which characteristics they laid emphasis, because both of regional and political goal appear in most of HuiDaoMens. Although those contemporary governments ordinarily called them Dow-Bees, which were groups of burglars without any political goal or regional ideal, HuiDaoMens are quite distinguishable from them. So, it is possible to say that the requisites of HuiDaoMen were to be a secret society, to be popular, to be religious, to be political. That is, HuiDaoMens should not be understood as mere superstitious secret group, but religious societies giving comforts to people as popular societies in feudal age. It is very important to have correct understandings on these HuiDaoMens, because they firstly appeard in the middle years of Ming(明) dynasty, and considerably affected the progress of Chinese history. Now I expect upcoming researches on them to bring into focus various aspects related to contemporary and social circumstances.

  • Korean Plecopteran research was started in 1921, and it has advanced greatly during last 20 years. Among families the family Nemouridae and Chloroperlidae are composed of plentiful species. Since North Korean Plecopteran research was begun in 1938, it made good progress by foreigners not North Korean in the 1970's. Subsequently a few species has been added up recently, and among families the family Perlidae and Nemouridae contain most abundant species. Totally Korean Plecoptera consists of 43 species in 25 genera in 10 families, and North Korean 37 species in 26 genera in 10 families. Among them 13 species are common in both. And Korean names of Plecopteran species were mixed in Hangeul-type and Chinese-type, on the other hand in North Korean names there were some cases of Hangeul-type, but most of species have no Korean names. In Korea, particularly Ministry of Environment designated and controlled domestic biological resources as Korean Species that Require Approval when shipping abroad and Korean endemic species, which include 9 species and 11 species in Plecoptera respectively. Finally two genera and four species gained new Korean names as follows: genus Megaleuctra (Keun-Kkoma-Gang-Do-Rae-Sok), genus Haploperla (Han-Nok-Saek-Gang-Do-Rae-Sok), Nemoura brevicercia (Min-Gang-Do-Rae), Nemoura espera (Kkot-Min-Gang-Do-Rae), Amphinemura baei (Je-Ju-A-Ga-Mi-Min-GangDo-Rae) and Amphinemura rai (A-Ga-Mi-Min-Gang-Do-Rae).
