Consumer Animosity to Foreign Product Purchase: Evidence from Korean Export to China

  • Purpose - This paper examines how the consumer animosity of partner country influences the purchase of foreign products. We analyzed news sentiment to determine whether Chinese consumer's animosity affect the purchase of the products made in Korea around the time when the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile system was deployed in South Korea. Design/methodology - To measure the tone of Chinese consumer animosity more carefully, we utilized a text mining technique of the Chinese language to read the public's opinion. Using Chinese news paper's editorials of 2015.1-2018.10, we analyzed the sentiment toward Korea and regressed it with Korean export to China. Findings - Empirical results report that Chinese consumers tended to reduce their purchase of consumer goods from Korea when the animosity increased, that is, the sentiments of Chinese news editorials were negative. In contrast, the animosity did not affect the purchase of Korean intermediates or raw materials. We further analyzed the effect by dividing the animosity into three categories; politics, economics, and culture. Among these groups, political news exhibits a unique effect on Chinese purchase on consumer goods from Korea. Originality/value - Existing literature on animosity models has measured the animosity by collecting the consumers' opinions through survey at a given time point, whereas it is measured by analyzing the tone of the press release by sentiment analysis during the time period around the event occurrence in this study.

Conflating Blackness and Rurality: Urban Politics and Social Control of Africans in Guangzhou, China

  • In April, 2020, amid widespread fear of a second wave of infections of the novel coronavirus in China, local authorities in Guangzhou cracked down on the city's black population, resulting in mass evictions of Africans. The incident raises several questions about racism in China. How should we interpret this heavy-handed treatment of black people? Was this an isolated incident? What motivated such operations? In this article, I explain social control of Guangzhou's African communities as a problem of municipal politics. What underlies the government's heavy handed approach, I argue, are those communities' ties to rurality, which constitute a roadblock in the city's urban upgrade. Using Dengfeng Village, one of the best known African communities in China, as a case study, I show that efforts to upgrade the area by the local state and the real estate industry were frustrated by the community's status as an urban village. Africans, whom Chinese have historically associated with rurality, are seen as contributing to a space that has long been stigmatized as a spatial manifestation of rural people's lack of self-discipline. To better reveal the interconnection between social control and urban politics, I place official action in context of the history of the community's formation and the lived experience. This analysis of Dengfeng applies to various extents to other major African communities in Guangzhou.

한국, 중국, 일본의 학교 수학 용어 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study of School Mathematics Terminology in Korean, Chinese and Japanese)

  • Korea and China have maintained close relationships since the ancient times along with Japan, which also shares the common Chinese culture. The three major players in Northeast Asia have been recognizing their increasing importance in politics, economy, society, and culture. Considering those relationships among the three countries, it's necessary to compare and investigate their mathematics terminology. The purpose of this study is to investigate the similarities and differences between the terminology of school mathematics in Korean, Chinese and Japanese. The mathematics terms included in the junior high school of Korea were selected, and the corresponding terms in Chinese and Japanese were identified. Among 133 Korean terms, 72 were shared by three countries, 9 Korean terms were common with China, and the remaining 52 Korean terms were the same as Japanese terms. Korea had more common terms with Japan than China, which can be explained by the influences of the Japanese education during its rule of Korea in the past. The survey with 14 terms which show the discrepancy among 3 countries were conducted for in-service teachers and pre-service teachers. According to the result of the survey, preferred mathematics terms are different from one group to the other, yet the Korean mathematics terms were more preferred in general. However some terms in Chinese and Japanese were favored in certain degree. This result may provide meaningful implications to revise the school mathematics terms in the future.

A study of Chinese distribution policies and challenges

  • Purpose - The objective of this paper is to explain how the Chinese distribution market will continue to bring tremendous business opportunities to commercial enterprises given the relatively strong economic fundamentals and substantial government-led measures for boosting domestic demand. Research design, data, and methodology - The study conducted a survey on China's 2011 retail market data. After empirically analyzing the data on retail sales, online retail markets, and franchises, we believe that online retailing in China will maintain its growth momentum. Results - This study shows that 2012 is expected to be a challenging year for the retail sector, as both external and internal pressures are likely to persist. Some of the major challenges facing retailers in China are mentioned below. Conclusions - Retailers in China face several major challenges. First, the uncertain economic outlook is having a considerable impact on China's retail market. Second, China's retailers face an unfair competition environment. Third, they are suffering the impacts of product safety problems.

  • With Wenhai big data SaaS cloud platform.2.0, this study analyzed data of 135 news reports relating to Chinese city Chongqing from Yonhap News Agency and ten South Korean mainstream newspapers from May 1st, 2018 to September 30th, 2022. Under the framework of Frame Theory, this research conducted data mining and analysis on how Korean mainstream media shaped city image of Chongqing, what kind of city images were shaped from dimensions of politics, economy, society, culture & sports as well as tourism and whether they are consistent with those in Chinese media. At the last part, discussions and suggestions was made.

중국의 패권주의 (China's Hegemony)

  • 과거부터 중국은 중화사상에 의해 주변국과 그 민족들을 자신의 세력권이라는 시각이었다. 이는 중국의 고유민족은 한족이고 그 외의 타민족들은 이민족이라는 것이다. 중국 덩샤오핑도 집권 이후, 개혁개방을 통해 급격한 경제성장을 이룩하면서 필요에 의한 패권주의 정책을 시행하고 있다. 대내적으로 타민족들을 억압·말살하기 위하여 타민족의 거주지역을 제한하거나 고유언어사용을 금지하고 있다. 대외적으로 영토확장을 위하여 역사와 문화를 왜곡·편입하는 '하상주단대공정', '중화문명탐원공정', '동북공정', '서북공정', '서남공정'을 전개하고 있다. 또한 개혁개방으로 자본주의가 발달하면서 원자재와 운송로 확보, 군사시설 확충, 수출시장 확대 등을 목적으로 일대일로를 개척하고 있다. 이러한 과정에서 중국은 관련국들의 정치, 경제, 영토 주권 등을 침해하기에 한국도 중국과 관련한 정치, 경제, 역사, 문화 등의 분야에 관한 대(對)중국정책을 재검토할 필요가 있다.

키워드를 중심으로 살펴본 중국 네티즌의 반한류 유발 요인과 제언: 티엔야논단(天涯論壇)을 중심으로 (A Study on Korean Wave and Its Negative Feelings: Focusing on Chinese Netizens)

  • 본 논문에서는 중국 인터넷 사이트에서 네티즌을 중심으로 논의되고 있는 반한감정을 한류의 대응현상으로 보고 이러한 현상을 야기하는 요인을 키워드를 중심으로 살펴보고 분석해보았다. 중국의 포탈사이트 티엔야논단(天涯论坛)에 게재되어 있는 반한감정과 관련된 34만개의 게시글을 분석하여 역사, 정치, 연예인으로 키워드 분류하여 정리하였다. 반한감정을 유도하는 주제로 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는 것이 정치관련 이슈(34%)였으며 특히 사드(고고 도미사일방어체계·THAAD)와 관련된 문제가 가장 자주 언급되었다. 이것은 중국 내 반한 감정이 단순히 미디어콘텐츠의 내용이나 연예인들로 인해서 야기된 것이라기보다는 중국의 정책과 밀접한 관련을 갖고 있음을 의미한다. 따라서 중국내 반한 감정을 극복하고 변화하는 미·중 국제 정세 속에서 양국과의 안정적인 관계를 유지하기 위한 대응책으로 중국 정부당국의 미디어 정책에 대한 한국의 미디어콘텐츠 제작진의 이해와 더불어 양질의 콘텐츠로 미디어 비즈니스를 리드할 것을 제안한다. 이를 위해서는 이미 성장한 중국미디어시장에 공동제작이나 합작을 통해서 우회적이지만 안정적인 접근을 시도하는 것이 필요하며, 무엇보다도 중국적 민족주의인 중화사상과 중국문화에 대한 밀도있는 이해와 더불어 중국문화의 대체제로서가 아니라 콘텐츠의 독립성과 우수성을 통해서 한국산 문화콘텐츠의 경쟁력과 정체성, 우수성을 확립하는 것이 필요하다.

16세기 호남(湖南) 한시(漢詩)의 의상(意象) 연구(硏究) - 박상(朴祥), 임억령(林億齡), 고경명(高敬命)을 중심으로 - (A study of image on Honam Chinese poetry in 16th century)

  • 본고는 16세기 호남 한시의 의상을 연구하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 박상 임억령 고경명을 연구의 대상으로 삼고 의상(意象)을 방법론으로 고찰하였다. 본고가 파악한 호남 한시의 특징은 다음 두 가지이다. 첫째, '문재불용(文才不用)'의식과 변새(邊塞) 의상(意象)이다. 박상 임억령 고경명은 16세기 호남의 인재들로 뛰어난 문재(文才)를 가지고 중앙정계에 진출하였다. 그러나 당대는 훈구파가 정국을 주도하는 시기로서 3인은 좌절을 겪게 된다. 그러한 과정에서 그들은 부정(不正)의 현실인식(現實認識), 현실비판(現實批判) 및 회재불우(懷才不遇) 의식(意識)을 드러낸다. 그런데 3인에게 주목되는 개성적 면모는 회재불우(懷才不遇) 의식(意識)이다. 그들의 회재불우(懷才不遇)는 그 기저에 '근본적으로 문재(文才)를 인정받지 못해서 불우하다는 문재불용(文才不用)' 의식이 자리잡고 있기 때문이다. 이들이 '문재불용(文才不用)'에 민감했던 것은 그들의 중앙진출수단이 뛰어난 문재(文才)였기 때문에 문재(文才)가 차단 당하자 좌절도 그만큼 켰기 때문이다. '문재불용(文才不用)' 의식은 특히, 외직을 맡거나 실질이 없고 명분만 있는 군직(軍職)을 맡았을 때 두드려지게 나타나는데, 검(劍), 극(戟), 장군(將軍) 등의 변새(邊塞) 의상(意象)을 통해서 시화(詩化)되고 있었다. 둘째, '화이불류(和而不流)' 의식과 절조(節操) 의상(意象)이다. 박상 임억령 고경명은 정치현실에서 '문재불용(文才不用)'을 토로하면서도 지속적으로 정치에 참여하였다. 이는 도(道)가 행해지면 나가서 벼슬하고 도(道)가 행해지지 않으면 은거하여 학문과 인격을 닦는 유자 일반의 수기치인(修己治人)의 자세와는 변별되는 것이다. 이는 3인이 유하혜(柳下惠)의 '화이불류(和而不流)'를 정치적 삶의 표본으로 삼았기 때문이다. 따라서 3인은 부정(不正)의 현실이라고 외면하거나 떠나가지 않고 자신의 도를 곧게 세워 지속적으로 현실에 참여하고자 했던 것이다. 이러한 정신지향은 접붙인 매화, 꾀꼬리, 지주석 등의 의상을 통해 시화(詩化)되고 있었다.

한·중 크로스오버 쇼퍼들의 모바일 앱 충성도에 대한 탐색적 연구 (Mobile app Loyalty of Cross-over Shoppers: A Comparison of Korean and Chinese)

  • Since 2009, consumers could access a new shopping channel called 'mobile shopping' with the generalization of smartphones. Mobile shopping (based on wireless communication technology), emphasizes convenience differentiated from internet shopping. A recent report introduced fashion products as powerful global drivers for mobile shopping sales. Korea and China have the highest percentage of consumer mobile shopping experiences compared to other countries. This study investigates the effects of cross-over shopping orientation, perception of app attributes, and flow on app loyalty that compared Korean and Chinese consumers. We obtained 652 usable questionnaires from two local college students; subsequently, data were analyzed by using factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, and regression analysis using SPSS 21.0 Package. The study results showed that the cross-over shopping orientation affected perception of app attributes that included Review/Information, Design, Response and Product. Product only affected Flow, which reflected a high similarity between Korean and Chinese consumers. However, Korean and Chinese consumers showed remarkable differences in the factors related to app loyalty. Therefore, the results indicate that retailers of fashion products have developed strategies to improve mobile sales and increase the app loyalty of cross-over shopping orientation consumers.

The Belt and Road Initiative in Lebanon: A Promising Initiative in a Complex Society

  • The study aims to investigate Lebanese-Chinese relations within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. Lebanon formally joined the effort in 2017; this paper emphasizes Lebanon's geostrategic importance. The paper presents an assessment of the investment risks in Lebanon, which is considered an economically unstable country with a volatile security situation, with many internal and external political hurdles. The paper refers to the obstacles and challenges that the Chinese investor may face in Lebanese society. The study employs qualitative descriptive analysis to address the status of Chinese investment in Lebanon and the consequences of this partnership; the paper examines previous research related to the Belt and Road Initiative and the Lebanese political, security, and economic situation literature. Due to the deteriorating security situation, external intervention, and the economic crisis, the results reveal that Lebanon is not a top investment priority for China, which is a big impediment to China entering into economic cooperation with Lebanon. The findings of this study suggest that the Lebanese government should adopt an anti-corruption policy to build confidence for the Chinese investor, reduce unnecessary public spending, and hold a national dialogue to build confidence among the Lebanese parties.
